Many people have special needs that require something more than a regular bed. That’s when they should be given a hospital bed. People usually purchase hospital beds for home use for sick, aging, or disabled family members. They are called hospital beds because they have all the features of the beds found in a medical facility. Hospitals beds provide the same comfort right at home to those who need more than a traditional bed.

The use of hospital beds has been on the rise because of the increasing number of disabled or aging people have been living at home and cared for by family members. This is done to avoid the cost of a professional caregiver or facility. Injured people also sometimes require hospital beds, especially in cases of a hip or leg fracture. Hospital beds are more expensive than a regular bed, the reason why many people choose to rent instead of buying one. But once you do not require the bed anymore, you can resell or donate it to someone who needs it. Rented hospital beds are best for those who need it for a short while. If you have a long-term requirement, purchasing a bed is more cost-effective.

If you are planning to purchase a hospital bed, in this post, we help you choose the right one.

Types of Hospital Beds

The common feature of all hospital beds is adjustability. Based on this, a number of hospital bed types are available. Each has its own adjustment options and different features and price points. Here we discuss the most popular types of hospital beds available today.

Fully-Electric Hospital Bed

This type of hospital bed is completely powered electronically and usually comes with a remote. With the help of the remote control, the height of the entire bed or different parts of it can be adjusted. Most beds also have buttons on the size of the bed in case the remote doesn’t work. With the remote control, the patient themselves can adjust the bed. In case the caregivers do not want the patient to use the remote control to maneuver the bed, the remote can be stopped using, and only the buttons on the side of the bed can be used. The buttons are only accessible by someone outside of the bed. Operating a fully electric hospital bed is very easy and effortless and can be done by anyone. Since there is no effort required in maneuvering these beds, they have a higher price tag and happen to be some of the most expensive types of hospital beds.

Semi-Electric Hospital Bed

Many people prefer to have a manual option to operate the bed, besides a remote control or buttons. In this case, a semi-electric hospital bed works great. They work mostly like the fully electric versions but in addition have a hand crank for adjusting the height of the bed. The presence of both electric and manual options together is a plus and helps in case the electronic option fail to work for any reason. However, the manual options require more effort, and that explains the slightly lower price tag. But because they also have electronic features, they are not the cheapest.

Manual hospital bed

As the name suggests, this type of hospital beds do not have any electronic features and require to be manually adjusted. Although they are the cheapest available hospital beds today, they also require a lot of effort, and cannot be operated by someone who doesn’t have the physical strength.

Low Hospital Bed

This type of hospital beds is ideal for patients who have a risk of falling down from the bed or have mobility issues and want to be able to get in and out of bed more easily. They are completely adjustable, but their overall height is much lower than other hospital beds. They usually are designed to be within a foot of the floor. The height can only be adjusted within a much smaller range. There are no manual low hospital beds, and they are almost always fully electric.

Bariatric Hospital Bed

Going by the name of the bed, they are built to support heavyweight patients. They are also fully electric and require no manual effort to adjust the bed. The weight capacity of these beds is much greater than other hospital beds, and they also have a wider mattress area. Because they are larger, heavier, and sturdier, bariatric hospital beds are more expensive than other options and usually the last resort when a regular hospital bed cannot support the weight of the patient.

Trendelenburg Hospital Bed

These beds have become popular in recent years because of the adjustment options they offer. Whether the patient is paralyzed, has mobility issues, is injured, or in therapy, the Trendelenburg bed offers the highest number of adjustment options. Besides adjusting only the height and the foot of the bed, different parts of the bed can be individually adjusted to the maximum level. For instance, the foot can be inclined to the highest level to resemble a recliner chair, and also allow zero-gravity features with the head lower than the feet. When patients use these beds, there is no need for special pillows. However, the bed also requires a greater space and needs to be put in a larger room. Among hospital beds, the Trendelenburg beds have the maximum functionality, adjustability, and fully electric features, the reason why they are also the most expensive type of hospital bed.

Are Hospital Beds Covered by Medicare?

Hospital beds are included in medical supplies. Because they are highly expensive, most people rely on health or medical insurance to purchase a hospital bed. The question is: is a hospital bed covered by Medicare, the most popular type of medical insurance?

Yes, Medicare does cover the purchase of hospital beds, only if you prove that you have a medical necessity that requires it. In addition, you have to be covered by Medicare Part B and also be assessed by your doctor, who must provide written documentation of your medical records and prescribe the bed for you. The supplier also has to receive the order before Medicare is billed.

You qualify for a hospital bed if you:

  • Cannot change positions on a normal bed
  • Cannot sleep like a regular person on a normal bed
  • Cannot sleep without the head of the bed higher than 30 degrees, because of medical conditions like breathing problems, congestive heart failure, etc.
  • Need to use traction attached to a bed
  • Have a completed, signed and dated Certificate of Medical Necessity by your doctor

how to get rid of bed bugs
<h2 class="entry-title"><a href="https://sleepsherpa.com/how-to-get-rid-of-bed-bugs/" rel="bookmark">How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs</a></h2>

Have you ever spent a night at a cheap bed & breakfast, only to be kept awake the whole time by itchy bites? Or that time at grandma’s house when you had to snooze in your sleeping bag because something wouldn’t stop biting you at night? Did you realize where the bites were coming from? Yes, they were bed bugs. These little creatures that are often microscopic to the naked eye can make life a living hell. If you have experienced itchy bites when lying in bed, or have actually seen bed bugs in the crevices and seams of your mattress, then it is a problem that you will have to fix. Otherwise, you can go months with these pesky little creatures ruining your sleep.

A lot of people tend to think that bed bugs are a result of an unclean home. But despite keeping your house spanking clean all the time you may be surprised to find bed bugs in your mattress or other upholstered furniture. Bed bugs are quite a nuisance. If your couches, cushions and upholstered furniture have bed bugs in them, it is repulsive enough to keep guests and visitors away from your house.  Most importantly, it can make sleeping a nightmare.

This is why the moment you realize your bed or mattress could have bed bugs; you should take the right measures to get rid of the problem. The longer you let the bedbugs remain the more they are going to spread.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are parasitic creatures, often microscopic to the naked eye. They are cold bed bugs because they live and breed in soft, upholstered surfaces, like mattresses cushions carpets, etc. Unlike dust mites, it is not normal for bed bugs to be present in houses. Dust mites are practically unavoidable and are present virtually everywhere. But bed bugs are not present in every place, which means it is not normal to have them around. If you know you have bed bugs in your house, you should not put up with the nuisance.

Bed bugs are normally found in beddings and mattresses because that is where they can find humans and pets to feed on. They also live in these surfaces and rapidly multiply. Bed bugs can also be found in other areas such as hard to reach crevices, nooks and crannies, under carpets, and even clothing.

The worst thing about bedbugs is that they can enter your home from just one contaminated item, such as an infested piece of clothing. It does not matter how clean your house is; if even one-bed bug enters the place, it will not take long at all to multiply into thousands. If you sleep in a bed bug infestation hotel room or travel on a train or a cruise, the bedbugs you pick up from there can infest your house in a matter of days. Second-hand pieces of furniture can also bring bed bugs into your house.

Because they are parasites, bed bugs are very strong. They can also penetrate through the walls of your house; so if there is a bed bug infestation in your neighbor’s house, your apartment or house will also be affected. Bed bugs usually feed on the blood of humans and other animals, but they can go months without needing to feed, making it hard to eradicate them. A crowded neighborhood or a place with too many humans living in close proximity also leads to bed bugs infestation.

Bed bugs do not spread diseases, but their bites are itchy and uncomfortable. Bed bug bites can also cause skin rashes.

Getting Rid of Bed Bugs – Step-by-Step Instructions

If your bed has been infested by bed bugs, your best solution would be to call pest control and take care of the problem. But if you want to do it yourself, fan following the next few steps should make the job easier:

Step 1: Strip your bed off the sheets and remove all pillowcases and covers. Do not leave them lying around because that will lead to contamination. Put these items in a garbage bag and tightly steal them while taking them to the washer. Wash them thoroughly in hot water.

Step 2: Do not attempt to do anything with the pillows. Simply throw them out. Next, thoroughly vacuum the mattress, making sure to get the seams, crevices and other nooks and corners where bed bugs hide. Do not empty the vacuum cleaner bag inside the house. Empty it outside the house and thoroughly clean the vacuum container to make sure no bed bug can make its way back to the house.

Step 3: For the maximum peace of mind it is wise to throw out the mattress and buy a new one. This will make sure that there are no bed bugs remaining in the house and also spare you the trouble of cleaning the entire mattress and then bug proofing it. A mattress with a removable cover is the best choice because the mattress becomes easier to clean. A removable cover also prevents the bed bugs from entering the mattress. However, if you do not want to purchase a new mattress, then read on for the next steps.

Step 4: To bug proof your bed, put your mattress in a bed bug proof cover. These highly specialized mattress protectors cover the entire mattress with a special material that the bugs are unable to bite through. This removable cover has a zipper that closes so snug that not even one bug can make its way through it. You have to keep on this cover for at least a year to make sure that all the bugs and the eggs have died.

Step 5: Do not forget to kill any bed bugs on the bed frame, cracks, and joints of the bed. If using pesticide, be careful with it and use it according to the instructions on the label. Push the bed away from the wall and encase the feet of the bed in bed bug interceptor cups. These cups have pesticide in them that kill any bug that attempts to climb up the bed. Make sure the sheets, bed skirt or covers don’t touch the floor. Vacuum the floor to remove all traces of bugs.

Eradicating bedbugs is a daunting task. If all else fails, it’s time to call pest control.

The Nectar is a four-layer mattress using a gel-infused quilted memory foam layer and a dense foam core. That provides a cool breathable top gel layer sleeping surface with an overall great comfortable feel and medium firmness that has been engineered to reduce hot spots.

Nectar MattressNectar Mattress is a new memory foam mattress company that is upping the free trial ante with a 365 day free trial period. This more than triples the length of many of the online mattress company trial periods. Amazingly, you get to sleep on it for a whole year before deciding if it’s right for you. That means you get to experience through all four seasons. Aside from the amazing trial period, it just feels great. Pay attention to the details in this mattress review. This isn’t just another typical foam mattress, it has some significant advantages over the competitors. It has a medium-firm feel but because it conforms so well, it feels great no matter what your firmness preference is.

This mattress is truly versatile enough to accommodate any sleeping position. It is firm enough for stomach and back sleepers for lumbar support but also conforms for side sleepers. Nectar was named one of the Best Mattresses of 2019!

Nectar is also listed as one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Overview of the Nectar Bed

Here’s a video of me speaking about some of the great features. What you’ll notice immediately is the quilted cover. Nectar stitches memory foam into the cover for a unique feel. You get an initial soft feeling then will transition into the support layers. You sink just enough for maximum pressure relief but not too much to where it would be hard to change positions at night.

Unboxing the Nectar Sleep Mattress

Your Nectar will arrive in a box like the one below and ships quickly!

Nectar Unboxing

The Nectar is available to try in the Sleep Sherpa store and so we unbox a fresh Nectar every 3 months or so. Here’s a video of me unboxing one. As you can see the construction is the same but the logo has been updated a little. This mattress is very popular among customers in our store.

Below is a brochure that explains the generous trial period. Again, it’s a 365 night trial period which so far is unheard of in the industry. This mattress also comes with the “Forever Warranty” meaning that as long as you own it, Nectar will warranty it against indentations over a certain amount. Although this is a very generous benefit, I am more impressed by the overall feel, price and generous trial period.

Review of Construction and Specifications

Here’s how the Mattress is made:

  • 1″ Top Comfort Layer – The cover is made of Tencel fiber which is a soft and very breathable material. It sleeps cooler than cotton and helps wick away moisture.
  • 1″ Support Layer – Underneath that is a quilted 4lb. cooling gel foam layer which is something unique. It gives the mattress a unique feel and provides great pressure relief.
  • 3″ Transition Layer – The fourth layer is what they call Hi Core Memory Foam. This is a dense foam that also is great for pressure relief.
  • 6″ Foundation Layer – This is a standard base layer similar to most other memory foam mattresses but is essential for providing good support.

Actually, it doesn’t require a foundation however you can put it on a foundation as long as it is firm. It also works on an adjustable bed, wood slats or even the floor.

What is the Nectar Forever Warranty?

Nectar introduced what they call, “The Forever Warranty”. This means that they guarantee the construction, and durability to the original purchaser.

Here are the details of the warrant as listed on their website:

  • For the first 10 years of ownership, we will replace your mattress with a brand new Nectar at absolutely no charge to you if defective in workmanship and materials. In years 10+ Nectar will completely repair and re-cover your Nectar, or replace your Nectar. All transportation charges will be waived if a manufacturing defect(s) or a materials failure is confirmed to exist.
  • Nectar also offers the “Choice Option” as part of our Forever Warranty™. If you are choosing the “Choice Option”, YOU KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL MATTRESS. At your choice, instead of us repairing or replacing your defective Nectar in years 10+, we will deliver a brand new one for 50% of the original price you paid.
  • Your mattress must be used on an appropriate base such as a platform bed or other suitable bed frame.
  • The warranty applies only as long as the original owner.
  • The warranty does not apply if burned or otherwise abused, damaged, misused, or neglected.
  • In order to provide the most optimum sleeping surface, the Nectar contains only the finest quality materials. As with all premium sleep products, certain adaptations will take place as your mattress adjusts to your body shape. This is to be expected and is part of the performance. Normal body impressions (not greater than 1.5”) are not defects and are not covered by the warranty. Excessive body impressions of greater than 1.5” are covered by the Forever Warranty until…Forever.

How Long will the Nectar Mattress Last?

Given the construction and the fact that it is a denser foam mattress, I expect you can get around 7-8 years out of this mattress before you notice lasting impressions or lack of support. Since Nectar is a relatively new company it’s hard to say for sure but based on my experience with similar construction this would be my best guess.

Will the Nectar Work with an Adjustable Bed?

Yes. The Nectar is ideal for adjustable beds because it contours so well.

How Do I Return A Nectar Mattress?

The biggest complaint about Nectar is their customer service. They are impossible to reach on the phone so your best way to contact them is on their website through chat. Just make sure you have your order number ready which is provided on your email confirmation receipt when you first place your order. With that, they can facilitate the return. Just keep in mind mattress pickups can be delayed if they are extra busy. That’s why I always recommend starting the return process a few weeks before the trial is over.

Findings and What Makes it Unique

Here are some preliminary shots of the Nectar Sleep Bed:

It will slowly cradle you. Here’s a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball:

sinkage

I also took off the cover to show you the inside of the Nectar mattress and how it responds. This is one of the best you can get for pressure relief. Notice that it recovers slowly. The negative here is that changing positions will be a little more difficult but the positive is that I don’t think you will need to change positions at night because of how well it conforms.

Here’s a video of the quilted cover. This is what really sets it apart. It is a dense foam layer quilted into the covering. Quilting foam into the costs more from a manufacturing standpoint but it is well worth it. I haven’t felt anything quite like this before.

Below is a video illustrating heat retention. I was surprised at the result. Given it has a gel memory foam quilted into the cover, I expected much more heat retention. The reason it performed so well is that the cover is made with a Tencel fiber that is much more breathable than cotton. Added to that is a phase change material that draws heat away. Other ultra-dense foam mattresses I have tested don’t come close in terms of drawing away heat.

You don’t need to worry about waking up your partner at night. There’s virtually no motion transfer! Check out the video below. Keep in mind, if your partner tosses and turns at night, this will affect your quality of sleep as well.

Here’s another video review showing how well it performs with motion transfer. In fact, my engineering team found this to be the best for isolating motion of all the mattresses they have tested. Sleep disturbances from your partner is a leading cause of poor sleep and Nectar addresses this head-on.

Nectar is a great mattress for addressing lower back pain. Yes, you will get good pressure relief but if you experience lower back pain this mattress will support and cradle your lower back so you don’t wake up in pain every morning.

Are there any Complaints?

The biggest Nectar complaints that I have heard are the long wait times. Due to demand customers can experience waits over a few weeks before their product arrives. In my opinion, it is well worth the wait. With the recent coronavirus pandemic, shipping times are delayed so keep that in mind. It may take 2-3 weeks for your mattress to arrive instead of the typical 5 business days.

Does it have any Off Gas Smell?

Again, since the Nectar is a denser foam mattress, it will be prone to more off-gassing. I think that’s because there’s simply just more material to off gas. You can expect the smell to go away after about 3-4 days with most of the smell dissipating within 2 days.

I often recommend opening the mattress in the morning so that it has all day to breathe before you sleep on it at night. If you are especially sensitive to smells, you may also want to open your windows. The smell is not permanent and will eventually go away.

How do you return the Nectar Mattress?

Returning is easy. If you find that you don’t like it within the 365 day home trial period, you just contact their customer serviced department and they will arrange pickup of the mattress. You do not have to put it back in the box and you do not have to pay return shipping. You aren’t out any money. It’s a clean break.

My Nectar Mattress Final thoughts

For the money, this is one of the best dense foam mattresses I have reviewed. It is made in China but I didn’t notice any major off-gassing. It is also Certipur Certified so the foams used in the construction are tested to be free of any harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde. This is extremely comfortable and I love how it conforms so well to your body.

A big complaint of dense foam is that they sleep hot. That’s because memory foam is an insulator and the denser the foam the more it will insulate. By incorporating a phase change material into the mattress ticking and quilting cooling gel foam into the top layer, Nectar has created a very innovative and effective to give you the best combinations of support, pressure relief, motion isolation and cooling.

I am very impressed with the quilted cover and I was very surprised at how quickly it dissipated heat. A queen size $699 which is substantially less than others of this quality and construction.

One of the biggest complaints is when they launched was problems with backorders. I don’t think they quite anticipated how much demand there would be and therefore had a hard time keeping up. The company has now caught up on their backorders and you can expect to receive your package in about 10 days after placing your order.
