Purple Sheets Review: Do they Affect the Performance of Your Mattress?

Purple Sheets
I just got my hands on the Purple sheets. They are advertising them as stretchy, soft and comfy so that you can get the most out of your Purple mattress or any mattress for that matter. They are indeed stretchy, comfy and cozy and in this review, I’ll lay out the pros and cons of these sheets. After having already reviewed the Purple Mattress, the Purple Mattress Protector and the Purple Pillow, I have come to find that these are really innovative products. They certainly aren’t for everyone but I am glad that Purple is bringing innovation to the space. Purple has some of the best product commercials. They are entertaining and informative. They actually make bedding interesting! Here’s the Purple sheets commercial from YouTube:

Ordering and Unboxing my Purple Sheets

Purple has great packaging. Not that it affects the feel of the sheets but it certainly makes receiving and even giving them as gifts, fun. The box has a lid that closes with a magnet. There’s also a cutout sample of the Purple sheets fabric so that you can feel them before you even take them out of the box. An important point to note is that there is no returns on these sheets so if you don’t like them you are sort of out of luck.

Construction of the Purple Sheets

Here are the construction details of the Purple sheets as listed on their site:
Appx. Weight: 4 lbs
Color: White/Slate/Sand
Fabric Content: 10% Spandex, 90% Bamboo-derived Rayon
Shipping Dimensions (LxWxH): 11″ x 9″ x 5.5″
As you can see these are basically rayon sheets. They say bamboo-derived but after all the processing that goes into making these, they are rayon. There is an assumption that bamboo sheets are eco-friendly but that is not true. Lots of chemicals are used in order to create the fabric for sheets with bamboo. That’s true with any bamboo sheets, not just the Purple sheets.

My Purple Sheets Findings

I just received these sheets and will update readers on any issues I have with them but so far so good. I appreciate the stretchiness of the sheets without sacrificing softness. Other bamboo sheets I have tried have a very silky feel. These don’t’ have quite as much of a silky feel so they will feel a little cozier. I really like the heavy duty band and they would be the best sheets for an adjustable bed where traditional sheets can easily come lose due to flexing the mattress. Purple doesn’t offer coupon codes so you can always get the best deal directly from their site. Shop Purple

Purple Sheets vs. Sheex Which is Better?

  1. Material:

    • Purple Sheets: They are made from a proprietary material called “Bamboo-Based Viscose,” which is said to be incredibly soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking.
    • Sheex: They produce a variety of sheet sets, many of which are made from performance fabrics like their special blend of polyester and spandex. This material is designed to wick away moisture and breathe well.
  2. Comfort & Feel:

    • Purple Sheets: They are known for their unique feel – soft, stretchy, and cool to the touch. They are designed to flex with the Purple mattress or any other mattress.
    • Sheex: Sheex sheets feel similar to athletic wear, as they are smooth and sleek. They are designed to provide a cool and comfortable sleep environment.
  3. Cooling Features:

    • Purple Sheets: The bamboo-based viscose is a natural temperature regulator, helping to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Additionally, the fabric is breathable and helps wick away moisture.
    • Sheex: The use of performance fabrics means that Sheex sheets have excellent temperature regulation and are highly breathable. They also offer specific lines designed to maximize cooling.
  4. Price:

    • Purple Sheets: They tend to be relatively expensive because they are made with a proprietary material. However, they are often included as a bonus with a Purple mattress purchase.
    • Sheex: They are also premium-priced due to the unique materials and technology used in their production.
  5. Care:

    • Purple Sheets: These are machine washable and can be tumble dried on low. It’s recommended not to use bleach or fabric softeners on them.
    • Sheex: They are also machine washable and dryer-friendly. However, it’s recommended to avoid using fabric softeners with Sheex products as well.
  6. Warranty & Trial Period:

    • Purple Sheets: As of 2021, Purple offers a 1-year warranty on their sheets.
    • Sheex: Sheex provides a 30-night risk-free trial, and their sheets come with a 1-year warranty.

Purple Sheets Complaints

  1. Price: One common complaint is about the price. Purple Sheets are considered to be on the pricier side of bed sheets due to the unique bamboo-based viscose material.

  2. Durability: Some customers reported issues with the durability of the sheets, mentioning that they noticed signs of wear such as pilling or thinning earlier than they expected.

  3. Size and Fit: Due to the unique stretchy material, some customers complained that the sheets did not fit as tightly as they would like on their mattress, or that the sheets would come off the corners of the bed during the night.

  4. Care: Some customers reported that the sheets did not hold up well in the wash, despite following care instructions. Complaints included fading, shrinkage, or the fabric becoming less soft over time.

  5. Color Options: There were also complaints about the limited color options available.

  1. Wondering what your opinion is now that you’ve had them for a while. I’ve gone through 2 sets in the last 6 months because the grey sheets keep darkening in areas that you sleep. I’m wondering if its just the color or the sheets in general

    • I’ve had them for 4 months. There are already 5 holes in the fitted sheet. Super nice but not durable. Purlple did some me a replacement however. great customer service.

    • We have the Sand color and have had all the same experience. It’s a shame that they seem to be full of compromises because they are definitely the most comfortable set I have tried that is this stretchy and yet doesn’t snag like other stretchy and bamboo based sets. The downside is the discoloring and holes as others have stated. The discoloring mostly clears after a wash, but the durability and pick holes is unacceptable at this price range. We haven’t had the pilling others do, but the trick is to not wash in really hot water, rinse in cold and dry on medium heat only. I feel like a co-dependent addict buying additional sets knowing all the downsides, but there’s truly nothing else so far that can compare on the softness and stretchiness without the picking from rough skin.

  2. Mine started pilling after 2 weeks of use – not sure what the problem is. I really love the sheets though. Very comfortable and cozy. Looking forward to seeing how the handle in the summer as I usually sleep warm.

  3. Seems to be a common problem. Great comfort, but the pilling/balling is unacceptable. Searching for replacement sheets. Mattress and pillow, excellent.

    • Wow. I’ve had mine for two year without any ripping.
      I must be lucky.
Or I got one of the first batches before cost cuts were made?
They are, by far, the most comfortable sheets I have had.

We have a Purple bed, so they fit perfectly. The color is a good medium grey, which is what we ordered. And they are, indeed, breathable.

As I recall, the cost was more when we bought them 2 years ago. But I could also be wrong. I admit, I’m not a huge fan of spending that much on sheets (thus only 1 set). There are other things I’d like to spend money on, and sheets aren’t something that comes to mind.

Overall, I love the sheets, and am looking at buying more.

Again, I must be lucky in that they have worn wonderfully for me.
      I’ll take that luck, gladly!

  4. I have been through 2 sets of Cal King Purple sheets now since 9/2017. Both ended up pilling up after the first wash following the washing instructions posted on the Purple website. Considering that others are posting they have the same issue with the sheets pilling up, I think this is a quality issue with the sheets. I doubt I will get my money back at this point.

  5. My fitted sheet started pilling after 3 days, so I used a fabric shaver to eliminate the annoying bumps. It’s too bad this happens because they are otherwise quite comfortable.

  6. Count me as one more with pilling issues. I move more than my husband and get more pilling and pulling sooner than his side of the bed. Also, I’ve had the gets holes easily experience. On a totally unrelated note, why, cat, are you biting the sheets? What possible benefit could that get you?

They do have an impact on the mattress performance. I’ve used several different sheets on my Purple and none have the give that allows the mattress performance to shine through like these.

If they were cheaper, I’d buy them knowing they’d have to be replaced every six months – also, I only want the fitted sheet.

  7. For the price, we are disappointed in how much they pull as well as the large dark spots where we slept (even after laundering as directed). It’s too bad because they are comfortable and keep us at just the right temperature.

  8. I’ve had a set of Purple sheets for 5 months and have absolutely no issues. I wash them once a week on the delicate cycle with cold water. I also use Tide Free & Clear and no fabric softener. Then I dry the sheets on the coolest and most gentle setting (hang drying would be good too). The sheets still look and feel brand new, and they’re the only sheets I use. You just can’t treat them like you would any other sheets. Treat them like very expensive athletic apparel. They have a really nice quality elastic band that holds the fitted sheet on the mattress really snug. My only complaint is that the set only comes with 2 pillow cases and I need 4, but Purple doesn’t sell the cases separately.

  9. I was really hoping to like these sheets, but after just two washes (delicate cycle with cold water, drying on the gentlest, coolest setting) the sheets are pilling like crazy. They’re too expensive to have given out this quickly. I guess I’ll have to try and find a replacement.

  10. I loved the sheets at first but like many other reviews, the durability is questionable. Mine started pilling after a few months and eventually became scratchy. Purple did send me a replacement but those eventually did the same thing. Both got so bad I had to use a lint remover machine just to try and prolong it (not by much). For the price, it’s not worth it. May try the Nest Bedding but that is also expensive.

  11. Love how these sheets feel and the stretchiness doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress. unfortunately they are incredibly thin and they have several holes after about a year. also they look like crap, they look like panty hose, it’s like my mattress is trying to rob a liquor store

  12. What are you all doing to your sheets so that they are pilling and tearing? I have used no other sheets since getting these— I LOVE them— and I haven’t had any of those issues. Machine wash cold only and dry on the delicate cycle. These are my favorite sheets ever.

  13. I have bamboo sheets but from a different brand. The sheets are really comfy to sleep at. Also, for the sheet to last, you have to follow the after care instruction.

  14. When purchased bed sheets were on backorder. Tried using my regular sheets (that I love). Felt like I was sleeping on concrete. Received sheets and the bottom sheet is a must for this bed. The top sheet is a nightmare and wraps up around me. I have already got rid of that and the pillowcases. I hate the top sheet and the pillowcases. Bottom sheet looks horrible as I got white and it is dingy. It pilled a little bit but didn’t tear at all. I have been looking around trying to find where I can just buy stretchy cheap bottom sheets. Have not found one yet.

  15. I love my sheets – no issue w piling and they are super comfortable. Only problem I have is the elastic shows through after one wash in a lot of spots. Not happy with that but don’t know what to do abt

  16. I’ve had my beige/sand colored Purple Sheets for a year now (purchased Aug 2018), which I use on my Purple Mattress. They have been perfect. No piling or wearing whatsoever, unlike some of the previous commentors. They still look brand new. The elastic bands on the bottom sheet have remained fully intact and are awesome as they never come undone from the corners. I wash them every week in warm water, but with high heat when drying. The sheets keep me cool, are very comfortable and soft. No snagging like other bamboo sheets. Despite their relative higher price, the quality and comfort is well worth it. They are very stretchy and mold to your body so there is no firmness at all, nor wrinkles. Since the top sheet is also stretchy, I too tend to get my feet caught in them getting in/out of the bed. I also have some minor discoloring on the pillowcases from the oils from the face, but which vanish upon washing. I bathe in the evening, so go to bed clean – perhaps an issue with some of the previous commentators in terms of wear. Overall, the sheets are in a class all their own and a must have in my household.

  17. Ive had my purple sheets and bed for 2 yrs. I love my bed but the sheets are crap. I received my sheets as a promotion for getting the bed. I had the sheets for less then 6 months and I started finding little holes in the fitted sheet. I called purple and was shipped a new sheet set. I’m thinking it must be just a defective sheet set… Ummm no! The new sheets did the same!!! These things sale for $100.00 ????. Purple needs to go back to the drawing board.
