Purple 4 Mattress Review

Purple 4 Mattress

Purple discontinued the Hybrid 2, Hybrid Premier 3, and Hybrid Premier 4 mattresses in early 2023. The company replaced these mattresses with three new collections: Essential, Premium, and Luxe. Each collection has three mattresses in them.

The Essential collection is the most affordable, and the Luxe collection is the most expensive. The Premium collection is in the middle.

Purple said that it discontinued the Hybrid 2, Hybrid Premier 3, and Hybrid Premier 4 mattresses to simplify its product lineup and focus on its new collections. The company also said that the new collections offer better value for customers.

If you are looking for a Purple mattress, I recommend checking out the new Essential, Premium, and Luxe collections. The company offers a 100-night sleep trial on all of its mattresses, so you can try one out before you buy it.

The Purple 4 mattress is the premiere luxury model from Purple. It has 4 inches of their signature smart grid technology on top and below that are pocket springs that provide extra bounce and more contouring. It is surrounded by a foam encasement for superior edge support. I was just as excited to try this mattress as I was the original Purple over 2 years ago. In short, this is the ultimate side sleeper mattress. You will experience an almost weightless feeling on this mattress. If you are only an occasional side sleeper or more of a back sleeper, I would check out the Purple 3 mattress review.

Unboxing the Purple 4

Unlike the Original Purple, the Purple 4 comes in a box the size of the mattress. Here’s the box that my queen size came in:

Overview of the Purple 4 Bed

This mattress along with the Purple 2 and 3 are more of an evolution of the Original Purple. What sets these models apart is that they include a pocket coil system instead of foam. Despite having springs they still contain motion incredibly well.

Here’s a video overview with me on the Purple 4. The cover of this mattress stretches to work with the mattress. I also highly recommend the Purple Sheets and Purple Mattress Protector because they are also stretchy and breathable. They also have a heavier duty elastic band to keep the bedding from slipping off the mattress.

My Purple 4 Mattress Findings

This is a mattress that you really sink into. In fact, it is the plushest among the entire Purple mattress line. Below is a photo showing how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress.

Purple Mattress Sinkage

This is a very bouncy mattress as well but not in a bad way. You get lots of quick recovery with the smart grid system and true bounce with the springs underneath but despite the bounciness, motion transfer is contained very well.

Here’s a video to illustrate this point.

Purple is one of the coolest sleeping mattresses on the market. If sleeping hot is your primary concern, you owe it to yourself to try the Purple. You don’t lose any of this benefit with more of the smart grid. Below is a video illustrating heat retention on the Purple 4. It was taken with my infrared camera. I don’t think this video quite does the mattress justice as heat is constantly dissipating through the grid keeping you cool.

Take a peek inside. Here’s an up-close shot of the inside of the Purple. Notice how the comfort grid system bounces back instantly. It’s almost like a jello type of responsiveness.

Here’s a peek inside the purple. I pulled back the foam border so you can see the spring system inside.

My Purple 4 Recommendation

The Purple 4 is the ideal mattress for hot sleepers that want a luxury feel that is supportive and cool sleeping. I really like that they added springs to these models because it creates a seamless transition. People who have tried memory foam and can’t handle them because of sleeping hot owe it to themselves to give the purple a try.

  1. Even with the 100 day trial, $3500 (king) is a lot to drop on something so unique. I am concerned that the Purple 4 may be tooooo squishy, but when they market it as the “ultimate in purple technology,” you kind of feel like you owe it to yourself to try their best! Thanks for the review on such a new product, and thanks to Purple for getting one to you this fast!

    • We were too but it is amazing. We both have different back injuries. This is the only mattress that worked for us.

  2. I had the original Purple mattress but it was too firm/too thin for me. I am a bigger guy at 6″1′ and 265lbs and I would feel like I was bottoming out in it so I ended up returning it after about 60 days because of some mild back pain that I was getting. I loved how cool I slept with it and it is what I miss most about it. I am really thinking about dropping the $2,800 on the Purple 4 and trying it out. I really loved the concept of the original and I think the new thicker one will work great for me. And if it doesn’t I can return it.

    • As a large fellow also (6’3″ 350lbs) I would recommend putting a cheap mattress under the original purple.

I didn’t really have any issues if I was on my back, but I am a side sleeper and like yourself I bottomed out on it and would wake up sore. I used an old my old mattress (it was a 300 dollar memory foam from costco that I bought like 5 years ago) as a box spring and it solved every single issue I had with it. No pains, no issues, ultra comfortable.

I do plan on getting the purple 4 king personally, and use the other one as a guest bed, but if you are looking to save a buck you may want to consider the original purple just throw it on top of your current bed or combine it with a cheap mattress to get that extra cushion under it.

      respectfully,
      -Del

  3. How does the Purple 4 work with an adjustable bed? Asking because my research states that springs are not desirable because of all the bending stress. Does wrapping the springs individually make a difference? How does it affect warranty?

  4. Been researching new mattress for a few months. Currently leaning towards Purple 4. I have one concern that I didn’t consider when I bought my current mattress (king memory foam) Just loved how comfortable from day one. Since this would be the first night sleeping in it thought that I would take GF out for dinner and a movie. We were so exited to “break in” new bed we left the movie half way thru. She was really in that feisty mood that night and normally this ends with fantastic “fantastic” “play time”. Within a short minute or two our night didn’t end well and many more followed. I realized the memory foam was great for sleeping but equally horrible for “play time”. How is this mattress in this category.

    • The Purple 4 is very bouncy. Nothing like memory foam. The polymer grid on top instantly recovers and there is a base layer of springs so lots of bounce on this one.

  5. Love the Purple 4. I generally sleep on my side but find even when sleeping on my back that this mattress is really comfortable!

  6. We replaced our 20 year old mattress and 3 inch gel foam topper with a Purple 4. We are both primarily side and stomach sleepers. My husband loved it from day one. I have sleep issues in general and I did enjoy one full night undisturbed sleep out of the 4 days we have owned it. I knew it would take some getting used to and I like it better everyday. It is firmer than old bed but I actually have less stiffness and achiness in the morning. I still get hot (but nearly as hot as with old bed) in the middle of the night but I am convinced that that is just me and my internal furnace going wacky. I love the Purple pillow. It weighs 10 pounds but it does not get hot and it is short; only a couple of inches. LOVE IT! The mattress is comfortable like foam in the sense of zero pressure but firmer to give some support. I think I just talked myself into a nap. A luxurious nap. Oh, we bought the sheets and protector. Sheets are soft and smooth like warm butter. Bought it in store, Mattress Firm Crystal Lake, IL. You can try it out there!

  7. I have been sleeping on the Amerisleep A4 which is one of the only mattresses I have tried where my arms don’t fall asleep. I am a side sleeper. I like the way that the A4 feels, but I usually switch what side I’m sleeping on once or twice a night and I find that in order to do this I have to wake up and physically use my leg to roll over to the other side. This results in fairly restless sleep throughout the night. I am looking for a mattress with the same pressure relief but where I am not so sunken in I cannot roll to the other side if I want to. Do you think the Purple 4 would be a good choice? I am 5’8 and 165 pounds so I sink in to the Amerisleep mattress more than my 6’1 160 pound spouse who does not have this problem, who wants to keep the mattress because he says it feels like a cloud. I am hoping that the purple 4 might work?

  8. Would this be a good recommendation for someone on the lighter side? 5’2 and 120lbs so I don’t really weigh enough for memory foam to work. Which is why I am looking at purple. I love a soft bed but my fiancé prefers a firmer feel. I’m hoping this would be better than a sleep number, and cheaper

    • I am 5’6” and 130. I can honestly say, the Purple 4 is heavenly. Get the sheets and mattress protector from Purple, as well. They are all stretchy allowing the mattress to work it’s miracles. You will not be disappointed! ????

    • I was recommended the 3 to support a herniated disc. But I’m also a side sleeper and the 4 takes off the pressure at the shoulders, hips and knees and it’s so comfortable, so I went with 4. My mom wasn’t shopping but walked out with the 4 as well because it cushions in all the right places (individual coils). She’s heavyset and a side sleeper with a torn rotator cuff and arthritic hips. The spring system makes it super easy to roll over without effort too, which is a bonus with injuries.

  9. Do you consider this the ultimate side sleepers mattress? Anything else out there come close? I put a ton of pressure on my shoulders when I sleep and haven’t been able to find anything that helps.

  10. We recently got the .2 bed and love it and don’t find it too firm for us!
We got to test all four beds at our local Mattress Firm here in Seattle
The .2 is the firmest of the four types (.2, Original, .3, .4 – firmest to least firm)
If you are like my wife and I, you might not need to go to the more expensive .3 or .4.
Before this bed we had always slept on standard coil mattresses on the firm side.
We are in our very late 50’s. She is about 175 lb and I am 190 lb.
My wife is a combo back and side sleeper and I am a combo stomach and side sleeper.
Since we aren’t used to foam or soft mattresses, we find the .2 to be heaven!

  12. My wife and I have had the Purple ‘.2’ queen for about 60 days and love it and don’t find it too firm. After the first week we briefly discussed switching to the ‘.3’, but after another week we concluded the ‘.2’ is perfect – just the right amount of soft and support.
We are around 60 – she is about 175 lb and I am 190 lb. My wife is a combo back/side sleeper and I am a combo stomach/side sleeper. Before this bed we’ve always slept on traditional spring mattresses on the firm side.

  13. Currently looking at the Purple 4. I’m a side and stomach sleeper—but I spend even more time working from home on a laptop and end up using my bed as my office most days. Can anyone speak to the level of support you get when sitting upright (think crossed legged or with legs stretched out with your whole body on the bed)? I didn’t consider this when purchasing my current mattress so it is less than ideal for sitting. Thanks!

  14. We recently bought a Purple 4 at a mattress store in Texas. We fell in love with the mattress on the floor. And though it’s only been a couple of nights, we have the feeling of “falling” or “sliding” toward the middle of the bed. I check behind myself constantly to feel the “flat mattress” that is between us. (We have a Queen.) But have that sense and feeling of rolling into the middle. I love the support and softness of the 4, but we are crowding each other. Should we switch to the 3?

  15. I have Twin XL Purple 4 mattress (and had tried tge Purple 3). I am exclusively a side sleeper.

From day 1, even before sleeping on them, the sides are about an inch higher than the middle. And, in Twin XL, it is very pronounced look, but seems to sleep well.

It seems like the Purple grid needs more support or the pocketed coils need to be more supportive.
