Naturepedic is an American company that produces organic mattresses and bedding products. It was founded in 2003 by Barry Cik, a environmental engineer and concerned father who wanted to create a safer and healthier sleeping environment for his young grandchild.

Cik was inspired to start the company after discovering that conventional mattresses were made with synthetic materials and potentially harmful chemicals that could off-gas and cause health problems. He was also concerned about the impact of these mattresses on the environment.

Naturepedic’s first product was a crib mattress made with organic cotton and natural latex. The company has since expanded its product line to include mattresses and bedding for adults, children, and babies.

In addition to using organic and natural materials, Naturepedic’s mattresses are certified by third-party organizations such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Greenguard, which test for harmful chemicals and emissions. The company also uses sustainable practices in its manufacturing processes.

Today, Naturepedic is recognized as a leader in the organic mattress industry and continues to advocate for safer and healthier sleeping environments for all.

What Products Does Naturepedic Offer?

Naturepedic offers a wide range of organic mattresses and bedding products for adults, children, and babies. Some of their most popular products include:

  1. Organic mattresses – These mattresses are made with organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex, and come in a variety of sizes and firmness levels.

  2. Organic crib mattresses – These mattresses are specifically designed for babies and are made with organic cotton and natural latex.

  3. Organic bedding – Naturepedic offers organic sheets, blankets, and pillows made with organic cotton and wool.

Naturepedic Crib Mattresses

Naturepedic offers crib mattresses specifically designed for babies. These crib mattresses are made with organic materials such as organic cotton and natural latex, and are designed to provide a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for infants.

Naturepedic’s crib mattresses are available in a range of sizes and firmness levels, and are designed to meet safety standards set by organizations such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

In addition to their standard crib mattresses, Naturepedic also offers a line of waterproof crib mattresses that are designed to protect against leaks and spills. These waterproof crib mattresses are made with organic materials and do not contain potentially harmful chemicals such as phthalates or vinyl.

Why is Naturepedic So Expensive?

Naturepedic’s products are often more expensive than conventional mattresses and bedding products due to several factors.

First, Naturepedic uses organic and natural materials, which are often more expensive than synthetic materials used in conventional products. The use of these materials requires more effort and resources in sourcing, processing, and manufacturing.

Second, Naturepedic’s products go through rigorous third-party testing and certifications, such as GOTS and Greenguard, which ensure that the products are free from potentially harmful chemicals and emissions. These certifications require additional resources and expenses to maintain.

Third, Naturepedic is a small, independent company that operates its own manufacturing facility in the United States. This allows the company to have greater control over the quality of their products and the production process, but also comes with higher operating costs compared to larger companies that outsource their manufacturing overseas.

Despite the higher costs, many people are willing to pay more for Naturepedic’s products because of their commitment to using organic and natural materials and their emphasis on creating safer and healthier sleeping environments.

What Type of Latex Does Naturepedic Use?

Naturepedic uses natural latex in their products, which is derived from the sap of rubber trees. The latex used by Naturepedic is certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), which ensures that it is made from organic and sustainable sources and meets strict environmental and social standards.

The natural latex used by Naturepedic is also free from potentially harmful chemicals, such as formaldehyde and phthalates, which are often found in synthetic latex. This makes their latex mattresses and bedding products safer and healthier for people with allergies or chemical sensitivities.

Naturepedic offers a range of latex products, including mattresses, mattress toppers, pillows, and bedding, that are designed to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep surface while also promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

I purchased a Naturepedic crib mattress to review and see how it compares to some of the other crib mattresses found on this site. Naturepedic crib mattresses are made in the USA in Chagrin Fall, Ohio.  and the company has been around for a while.

Ordering and Unboxing the Naturepedic Crib Mattress

You can purchase this crib mattress via the Naturepedic website or from Amazon. Naturepedic is a relatively big brand so they can also be found in local retail stores. For this review, I bought the Ultra Breathable 2-Stage Organic Crib Mattress. I bought mine at a local store.2 stage means that one side is firm for infants and the other is a little softer and can be used when the baby gets older and graduates to a bed.

Specifications of the Naturepedic Crib Mattress

This mattress measures 27.5″ x 52″ x 6″ which conforms to the U.S. ASTM standard for crib mattresses and weighs 17.6 lbs.

This mattress is constructed as follows:

The crib mattress is covered by a breathable mattress pad. This pad has a sort of grid system underneath which allows air to circulate.

Underneath that is the waterproof cover. According to the Naturepedic website, this is a organic cotton cover with polyethylene to provide the waterproofing. This Polyethylene is food grade which means that it doesn’t contain any harmful phthalates. This also serves as a dust mite and bed bug barrier.

Below that is organic cotton from USDA sources that supports U.S. farmers. The cotton is on both sides of the mattress for padding since this is a 2 stage mattress.

The middle layer is the unique wave support technology made from polyethylene. This is used in lieu of a spring system and provides support and thickness to the mattress. It also makes the mattress light since no steel is used.

According to the website, this mattress is also GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. Since the majority of this mattress is made from non-organic textile I think that the GOTS certification is from the organic cotton used for the batting and partially in the cover.

My Naturepedic Recommendation

Overall I think this is a fine crib mattress. However I worry that consumers will confuse this with an organic mattress which it is not. The only thing organic about this mattress is the inch or so of cotton batting. However, since it is sealed in plastic, I’m not sure what the benefit of that is except that it is better for the environment. It really does nothing to improve the sleep environment of the baby. I like that Naturepedic is focusing on breathability and quality material but I have seen many other bloggers get their facts confused.

The 2-stage design is a great concept but in the end, I really didn’t notice much of a difference in firmness. There is a little more cotton batting on the toddler side as opposed to the infant side but in my opinion not enough to make a significant difference. This mattress retails at $399 which is a steep price to pay given the materials used.

Naturepedic Crib Mattress Alternatives

There are several alternatives to Naturepedic crib mattresses that parents can consider when looking for a safe and healthy sleeping surface for their baby:

  1. Colgate Eco Classica III: This crib mattress is made with eco-friendly foam and is certified by Greenguard Gold for low emissions. It also features a waterproof cover made with organic cotton.

  2. Sealy Soybean Foam-Core: This crib mattress is made with soybean foam and has a waterproof and stain-resistant cover. It is also Greenguard Gold certified for low emissions.

  3. My Green Mattress Emily Crib Mattress: This crib mattress is made with organic cotton and natural wool, and is free from harmful chemicals and fire retardants. It is also Greenguard Gold certified.

  4. Naturepedic No Compromise Organic Cotton Classic Lightweight: This crib mattress is another option from Naturepedic, but is designed to be lighter and more affordable than their other models. It is made with organic cotton and natural latex, and is Greenguard Gold certified.

When choosing a crib mattress, it’s important to look for certifications such as Greenguard and GOTS, as well as considering the materials used in the mattress and any potential allergens or irritants.

Naturepedic vs. Avocado Crib Mattress, Which is Better?

Both Naturepedic and Avocado are reputable companies that offer organic crib mattresses, but there are some differences between the two that parents may want to consider:

  1. Materials: Naturepedic uses organic cotton and natural latex in their crib mattresses, while Avocado uses organic cotton and natural wool. Both materials are safe and healthy options, but some parents may prefer one over the other based on personal preferences or sensitivities.

  2. Certifications: Naturepedic’s crib mattresses are certified by GOTS, Greenguard Gold, and MADE SAFE, while Avocado’s crib mattresses are certified by GOTS and Greenguard Gold. Both companies’ certifications ensure that their products are free from harmful chemicals and emissions.

  3. Price: Naturepedic’s crib mattresses tend to be more expensive than Avocado’s, which may be a consideration for some families.

  4. Firmness: Naturepedic offers crib mattresses in a range of firmness levels, while Avocado offers a single firmness option that is designed to meet the needs of most babies.

Ultimately, the choice between Naturepedic and Avocado will depend on individual preferences and priorities. Both companies offer safe and healthy options for babies, and parents may want to consider factors such as materials, certifications, price, and firmness when making their decision.
