I received the Natural Escape mattress from the company My Green Mattress for review. This mattress uses all-natural materials  such as GOLS and GOTS certified materials, hence the “green” in My Green Mattress. This is the first hybrid latex mattress I have reviewed and I have come to appreciate how the springs assist in giving proper cushioning and support in conjunction with the latex.

Ordering from My Green Mattress

You can purchase the Natural Escape mattress direct from the My Green Mattress website. Shipping is free and my mattress arrived in about a week. Similar to many of the online mattress startups, this mattress also comes roll-packed in a box. This is the first natural mattress that came with a generous trial period. You get a 365-day trial where if you aren’t satisfied, you can return the mattress for a full refund. This is a big plus since there are very few natural mattress brands that do this.

Unboxing Your My Green Mattress

Below is a video of me unboxing the mattress. Please note, I made an error in describing the latex. it is Dunlop, not Talalay latex.

Construction of the Natural Escape Mattress

The Natural Escape mattress by My Green Mattress is a prime example of the company’s commitment to providing eco-friendly, comfortable, and durable sleep solutions. This hybrid mattress, designed to cater to various sleep preferences, boasts a unique combination of natural materials and a carefully crafted construction. Here, we delve into the key construction details of the Natural Escape mattress:

  1. Cover: The Natural Escape mattress features a quilted cover made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and d. The organic cotton ensures a soft and breathable surface, while the wool layer provides natural moisture-wicking properties and temperature regulation, keeping sleepers cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  2. Comfort Layer: Beneath the quilted cover lies a 3-inch layer of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. This natural latex layer offers a responsive and contouring feel, providing pressure relief and support for various sleeping positions. Additionally, the latex layer is perforated for increased airflow and breathability, further contributing to a comfortable sleep environment.
  3. The Madison pocketed coil innerspring is designed and manufactured by My Green Mattress in their Illinois factory.: The core of the Natural Escape mattress consists of an 8-inch layer of individually wrapped, pocketed innerspring coils. These coils, made from recycled steel, provide targeted support and enhanced motion isolation, ensuring a stable and undisturbed sleep experience. The coil system is divided into three zones, offering firmer support in the center third of the mattress for optimal spinal alignment and pressure relief.
  4. Edge Support: The Natural Escape mattress boasts a reinforced edge support system, utilizing a higher gauge coil around the perimeter of the mattress. This design ensures a consistent level of support and comfort across the entire sleep surface and prevents sagging at the edges, making it easier for sleepers to move in and out of bed.
  5. Base Layer: Completing the construction of the Natural Escape mattress is a thin layer of GOTS-certified organic cotton batting, which serves as a base for the pocketed coil system. This layer offers additional cushioning and stability, contributing to the overall durability and longevity of the mattress.
  6. Button Tufting

The Natural Escape mattress by My Green Mattress showcases a thoughtful and eco-friendly construction, utilizing high-quality, natural materials to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep experience. With its combination of organic cotton, natural wool, organic Dunlop latex, and recycled steel coils, the Natural Escape mattress delivers on both sustainability and performance, making it an ideal choice for the environmentally conscious consumer.

These mattresses are made in a GOLS and GOTS-certified factory. There’s only a handful of these factories in the United States. This means that are audited by the Control Union to be sure that we are completely transparent and compliant with their strict regulations for storing materials and cleaning our equipment.

This mattress has three layers to it.

The first layer is the quilted cover that is made of GOTS certified wool and organic cotton.

Below that is a 3 inch 100% natural latex layer which is the comfort layer.

Below that is a 1462-pocketed coil spring system with great edge support.

In total, this mattress measures 11 inches in height.

One big positive to this mattress is that there are no flame retardant chemicals used. Instead, the all-natural wool cover acts as a natural flame retardant. This is typical on many natural latex mattresses. Instead of memory foam, you have natural latex so no artificial chemicals there either, and consequently you won’t have to worry about any off-gassing. Our son said it smelled like Cheerios, whatever that means.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Findings

I have reviewed a few other latex mattresses, the Savvy Rest and the Spindle. However, neither of these included springs. An all-latex mattress will have some bounce to it since it’s basically rubber but not as much as a spring will give you. Here’s a video illustrating the amount of bounce you will get with the Natural Escape mattress:

The mattress itself will have some sink to it but unlike memory foam, it will bounce back into shape immediately:

Here’s how well the mattress dissipates heat. I used my FLIR camera to make an infrared video showing the heat my hand generated.

The My Green Mattress Recommendation

What I like about this mattress is that it just feels like a solid, quality innerspring mattress. You get great bounce with the pocket coils without as much motion transfer as a cheaper mattress. The Latex layer is also just right. This mattress will have a broad appeal to many different types of sleepers and the fact that it uses all-natural materials is a huge plus. In terms of firmness, this is more of a medium-firm. You aren’t going to sink into this mattress like soft memory foam. However, in my opinion, the springs work well with the latex to offer better support than an all latex mattress will. The 365-day free trial makes it that much more enticing to try.

My Green Mattress vs. Avocado: A Comparison of Eco-Friendly Mattress Brands

As the demand for sustainable and non-toxic sleep solutions continues to grow, My Green Mattress and Avocado Green Mattress have emerged as two leading brands in the green mattress market. Both companies are committed to providing eco-friendly, high-quality mattresses that cater to various sleep preferences. This comparison offers an overview of each brand’s offerings, highlighting their similarities and differences to help consumers make an informed decision.

Materials and Construction

My Green Mattress and Avocado both prioritize the use of natural and organic materials in their mattresses. Both companies utilize GOTS-certified organic cotton, OEKO-TEX certified natural wool, and GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex in their products, ensuring a comfortable and healthy sleep environment.

The Natural Escape mattress by My Green Mattress is a hybrid mattress featuring a 3-inch organic Dunlop latex comfort layer, an 8-inch pocketed coil support core, and a reinforced edge support system. This design offers a medium-firm feel, catering to various sleep positions and body types.

On the other hand, Avocado’s flagship offering, the Avocado Green Mattress, is also a hybrid mattress, featuring a 2-inch organic Dunlop latex comfort layer, an 8-inch pocketed coil support core, and a similar zoned coil design for targeted support. The mattress comes in two firmness options: Standard (gentle firm) and Pillow-top (medium). The Pillow-top version includes an additional 2-inch organic latex layer for added plushness and pressure relief.

Certifications and Eco-Friendliness

Both My Green Mattress and Avocado are committed to sustainability and adhere to strict environmental standards. Each brand’s mattresses carry certifications such as GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX, guaranteeing the use of eco-friendly materials and ethical manufacturing processes.

Avocado takes its commitment to the environment a step further by becoming a certified B Corporation and a member of the 1% for the Planet organization, pledging to donate a portion of its revenue to environmental causes.

Trial Period, Warranty, and Pricing

My Green Mattress and Avocado both offer a 1-year trial period, allowing customers ample time to test their mattresses and ensure satisfaction. Both companies provide a 25-year warranty on their mattresses, reflecting their confidence in the quality and durability of their products.

In terms of pricing, My Green Mattress tends to be slightly more affordable than Avocado. For example, the Natural Escape mattress is priced lower than the Avocado Green Mattress in both Standard and Pillow-top options, making it a more budget-friendly choice for eco-conscious consumers.

In conclusion, both My Green Mattress and Avocado offer high-quality, eco-friendly mattresses that cater to different sleep preferences and budgets. While their materials and constructions are similar, Avocado’s additional firmness options and B Corporation certification may appeal to some customers. However, the more affordable price point of My Green Mattress’s Natural Escape makes it an attractive option for those seeking a sustainable and comfortable sleep solution on a budget. Ultimately, the choice between these two green mattress brands will depend on individual preferences and priorities.

  1. Thank you for the Natural Escape review. You mentioned it being a medium firm level of firmness. Do you think this mattress would be too firm for a side sleeper?

    Reply
    • I don’t think so. The reason being, because it has a coils system so you will get some sink into the mattress as well as the benefit of the latex.

  2. My wife is a Naturopathic Doctor and understands the importance of a natural mattress and insisted we buy one for my daughter when we moved her out of her crib. I was hesitant since these are so expensive, but she explained that sleeping on a mattress that is not natural means that her face is pressed up against chemicals and toxic off-gassing for an entire night. This was a huge concern so we searched high and low for a high quality natural mattress that would also provide her with a good night’s sleep. We went to a local store that specialized in organic mattresses and could not find anything that felt good (they felt flimsy) and they were all so expensive. I decided to search online to see if I could find something and luckily I found the Echo Mattress.

We purchased the single sided Echo Mattress for my little girl and we absolutely LOVE it. It is super clean, no smells at all, and very comfortable. It came packaged rolled up and was super easy to bring upstairs and unroll onto her bed.

Now when I read my little girl bedtime stories I end up staying in bed with her a bit longer than I need to so I can enjoy her comfortable bed. I was actually enjoying my little girl’s mattress better than my own so we decided to buy a King Size double sided version of this mattress for my own bed.

This is an incredible bed an a wonderful price and the customer service in this place is amazing too!

  3. Hi, I am very interested in purchasing a king My Green Mattress Natural Escape for my stomach sleeper husband and me (mostly side sleeper, and sometimes back). I am wanting to invest in a healthy natural mattress. No toxins, natural materials. I’m really picky.

My question after reviewing this review and two others you have done about Nest Bedding (hybrid latex and Alexander), which would you personally recommend for comofort?. We currently have a maybe 8 year old innerspring pillow top mattress (have no clue on brand but apparently my husband spent a decent amount of money on it when he purchased it). It feels flexible and ok, but not great. I can almost feel the springs or something at times.

We went on vacation and the bed was amazing we slept in. Realizing comfort is a nice plus, I am looking for something that suits our sleeping styles, is completely non toxic, so things like memory foams or petrochemicals or even bio foams are out (such as the Nest Alexander unfortunately), and has a nice comfortable feel to it (ie, i don’t want to have to sleep on an all natural brick or lumpy thing).

Would Nest Bedding Hybrid Latex fit the bill? Or is My Green Matress Natural Escape basically similar? (There’s even another company called Sleep On Latex which sells a Pure Green latex non hybrid mattress. which could be a contender) In our case, would we benefit from having coils and latex hybrid versus only latex?

I appreciate your advice as you seem to do very fair reviews on a bunch of mattress and know your stuff!

    • I really like My Green Mattress as a Company. They make wonderful non toxic mattresses. If you like the feel of all latex for your mattress, Sleep On Latex comes highly recommended and they were recently listed in consumer reports. I think they offer a great value. Although I haven’t personally slept on their mattresses, I am impressed with their pricing.

  4. Have you looked at the Eco Terra mattress. It’s similar, 11″, 2.5″ Dunlop NR latex – S-M- or F (they’ll do Talalay if you want) and they use the Legget & Pratt coils but I don’t think they’re zoned or as heavy as the Natural Escape. I’d be interested in a comparison. Also, DreamFoam and Arizona Mattress makes a similar bed.

    • I haven’t tried the Eco Terra yet but it looks like a nice mattress given the construction. Same for DreamFoam and Arizona, haven’t tried them but will most likely get to reviewing them soon. I can say that people I know who have purchased the Natural Escape have been very happy with it.

  5. If you’re looking for a good toxic/chemical free all Organic mattress for your money look no further. My Green Mattress is the best. I Purchased a Queen size about 3 months ago and now I’m very happy to say I don’t wake up with lower back pain or allergies. Also has great motion transfer.

  8. Hi! I’m stuck between the Natural Escape, Avocado Green or the Naturpedic mattress from Pottery Barn. Can you tell me anything that would help me to decide between the 3? I like that the Naturpedic has the option for different firmness levels for my husband and myself as well as the fact that the materials are non toxic and highly rated. The price and lack of trial period are a big concern for me though which is what lead me to MyGreenMattress and the Avocado. Thanks!

    • Alex, the alvacado is zoned so the middle is softer, the my green mattress is harder in the middle. So there’s that tid bit!

  9. …I just saw the above comment, would the My Green be better for me because it’s “harder in the middle”?- I carry more weight in my upper and mid torso.

    Thanks again

  10. How does the Natural Escape compare to the Awara? Both their luxury hybrid and premier? I currently have the previous generation Awara and it’s been pretty good, but I need another bed for a different location. Thanks.
