OVERVIEW

2024 Lull Mattress Update

The Lull mattress is the 26th mattress I have reviewed. And I have reviewed hundreds of memory foam mattresses. So, it’s safe to say I have some context in which to compare this mattress among other top bed in a box brands. I was given a queen size mattress for free to review. There’s nothing terribly unique or groundbreaking about the Lull mattress but that’s OK. The more mattresses that come online, the more choices are available to the consumer but given how it feels, I consider this an excellent mattress. I personally prefer memory foam and this is an all-foam mattress that keeps you cool without giving you a stuck feeling and is ideal for motion isolation.

Since Lull Launched in 2016 they have expanded beyond the basic 10 inch memory foam mattresses to include the new Lull Premium Mattress which included premium memory foam and the Lull Lux Hybrid Mattress which has pocket coils and gel foam. The original Lull was designed to be a universal firmness mattress while the newer version of the Lull are more refined.

Just about every online mattress brand will tout itself as being a medium firm mattress or at least having a medium firm in their offering. I found the original Lull to be a true medium feel, which makes the Lull mattress good for most sleepers.

When you open the box there’s a card that explains how to set up the mattress. It really doesn’t require much explanation. Just put it on your bed and open the plastic, the mattress will do the rest! It also has instructions on sharing your experience on social media to win a prize.

The Lull mattress is one cool cat! Some of its best features include its three layers of foam for maximum comfort, its ability to provide excellent support for your body, and its capacity to isolate motion so you can sleep soundly without being disturbed by your sleeping partner. Plus, it’s made with high-quality materials and is affordable, making it an all-around great catch. Who knew a mattress could be so amazing?

Motion Transfer

5/5

Ah, motion transfer, a key concern for many people sharing a bed with a partner or pet. But fear not, my friend, as the Lull mattress has got you covered! The mattress is designed to minimize motion transfer, thanks to its multiple layers of foam that work together to absorb and distribute movement. This means that if your partner or pet tosses and turns during the night, you won’t be disturbed, allowing you to sleep more soundly. So rest easy knowing that the Lull mattress has got your back, or should I say, your back and your partner’s back!

Pressure Relief

3/5

Like many of the other memory foam mattress reviews I have done, the Lull mattress comes in 3 layers. A supportive base layer, a transitional layer and a top comfort layer. The Top layer is made of a gel infused cooling memory foam layer. I am really impressed with this layer. It does a great job of keeping me cool. I have slept on other mattresses with a gel cooling layer but this mattress does a better job with cooling than most.

Below is a photo that illustrates how much the mattress will sink. The 2015 model was a little firmer. The updated 2018 Lull provides just a little more hug. A minor tweak but you can definitely feel the improvement.

Temperature Regulation

4/5

The Lull mattress is designed to help regulate your body temperature while you sleep, thanks to its gel-infused memory foam top layer, which helps dissipate heat and keep you cool. Additionally, the breathable cover allows for increased airflow, further helping to prevent heat buildup. While personal preferences can vary, many users report that the Lull mattress sleeps cooler than other foam mattresses they’ve tried. So, if you’re looking for a mattress that can help keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night, the Lull mattress may be a great option to consider.

Edge Support

4.4/5

While the Lull mattress is primarily designed to provide excellent comfort and support for your body, its edge support is also quite good. The mattress features a high-density foam base layer that provides a solid foundation and helps to prevent sagging around the edges. This means that you can sit or sleep near the edge of the mattress without feeling like you’re going to roll off or sink in too much. That being said, it’s worth noting that some users may prefer a mattress with even stronger edge support, particularly if they tend to sleep or sit on the edge of the bed frequently.

How Easy is it to Change Positions?

4.4/5

The Lull mattress is designed to be responsive and supportive, making it relatively easy to change positions while you sleep. The mattress’s top layer of gel-infused memory foam conforms to your body’s shape, providing a cradling sensation that can help reduce pressure points and promote proper spinal alignment. Meanwhile, the middle layer of responsive foam provides support and helps distribute your weight evenly. These layers work together to create a surface that is both comfortable and easy to move on. Additionally, the Lull mattress’s firmness level is considered medium-firm, which is a popular choice for many sleepers who want a balance of support and softness. So, whether you’re a restless sleeper or simply like to shift positions during the night, the Lull mattress is a great option to consider.

Sex

4.4/5

The Lull mattress can be a good choice for sex due to its responsive foam layers that can provide a bit of bounce and help to facilitate movement. Additionally, the mattress’s medium-firm level of support can help with stability and prevent sinking too deeply, which can be beneficial for some couples. The Lull mattress also has good motion isolation, which means that movements are absorbed and not transferred to the other side of the bed, providing greater privacy and minimizing disturbances. Overall, while individual preferences may vary, many couples find the Lull mattress to be a comfortable and suitable surface for intimacy.

Off-Gassing

4.4/5

Like many foam mattresses, the Lull mattress may have a slight odor when first unpacked due to the manufacturing process and the materials used. However, the odor typically dissipates within a few hours to a few days, depending on factors such as ventilation and humidity in the room. The smell is not harmful and is generally considered to be mild and non-offensive. To help speed up the process, you can place the mattress in a well-ventilated room with good airflow, or use a fan to help circulate the air around the mattress. If you are particularly sensitive to odors, you may want to consider airing out the mattress for a few days before using it.

Side Sleepers:

When it comes to side sleeping, both the Lull mattress and the Lull Hybrid mattress can be good choices, but there are some differences to consider.

The Lull mattress is an all-foam mattress that features three layers of foam, including a top layer of gel-infused memory foam. This layer conforms to your body’s shape, providing pressure relief for your shoulders and hips, which can be especially beneficial for side sleepers. The foam layers also work together to provide a balanced level of support and help with proper spinal alignment.

The Lull Hybrid mattress, on the other hand, combines foam layers with a layer of individually wrapped coils. The coils provide additional support and help with responsiveness and bounce, which can be beneficial for couples or individuals who enjoy more mobility during sex. While the coils may provide some extra cushioning for side sleepers, they may not conform as closely to the body as foam, which could potentially cause pressure points.

Ultimately, the choice between the Lull mattress and the Lull Hybrid mattress may come down to personal preference. If you prefer a classic foam feel with a balance of support and pressure relief, the Lull mattress may be the way to go. If you prefer a bit more bounce and responsiveness, the Lull Hybrid mattress could be a better fit.

Back Sleepers:

Both the Lull mattress and the Lull Hybrid mattress can be suitable for back sleeping, but again, there are some differences to consider.

The Lull mattress is an all-foam mattress that provides a balance of support and pressure relief. The top layer of gel-infused memory foam conforms to your body’s shape, which can help distribute your weight evenly and reduce pressure points. The foam layers also work together to provide support and help with proper spinal alignment, which is particularly important for back sleepers.

The Lull Hybrid mattress combines foam layers with a layer of individually wrapped coils, which can provide additional support and help with responsiveness and bounce. The coils can also help with temperature regulation, as they allow for increased airflow throughout the mattress. While the coils may provide some extra cushioning for back sleepers, they may not conform as closely to the body as foam, which could potentially cause pressure points.

Overall, both mattresses can be good choices for back sleepers, depending on your individual preferences. If you prefer a classic foam feel with a balance of support and pressure relief, the Lull mattress may be a good fit. If you prefer a bit more bounce and responsiveness, along with the added benefit of temperature regulation, the Lull Hybrid mattress could be a better option.

Stomach Sleepers:

When it comes to stomach sleeping, it’s generally recommended to choose a mattress that is on the firmer side to help prevent excessive sinking in the middle of the mattress, which can cause strain on the lower back. However, stomach sleeping is not recommended by some sleep experts because it can place additional pressure on the neck, shoulders, and back.

That being said, both the Lull mattress and the Lull Hybrid mattress may not be the best options for stomach sleepers due to their medium-firm level of support. While they do provide a balance of support and pressure relief, they may not provide enough firmness to properly support stomach sleepers, particularly those with lower back pain.

If you are a stomach sleeper, it may be best to consider a firmer mattress or an adjustable base that allows you to raise the head of the bed, which can help alleviate pressure on the neck and shoulders. Alternatively, you may want to consider adjusting your sleeping position to your side or back, which can be better for overall spinal alignment.

How Much Does the Lull Cost?

While the price may be higher than some standard mattresses, the additional cost is justified by the mattress’s quality and features.

Construction of the Mattress

Both the Lull mattress and the Lull Hybrid mattress are constructed with high-quality materials designed to provide a balance of support and comfort. Here’s a breakdown of their construction:

The Lull mattress is an all-foam mattress that features three layers of foam:

  • The top layer is a 1.5-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, which provides pressure relief and helps regulate temperature.
  • The middle layer is a 1.5-inch layer of foam that provides support and helps with proper spinal alignment.
  • The bottom layer is a 7-inch layer of high-density polyfoam, which provides a sturdy foundation for the mattress.

The Lull Hybrid mattress combines foam layers with a layer of individually wrapped coils:

  • The top layer is a 1.5-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam, which provides pressure relief and helps regulate temperature.
  • The second layer is a 1.5-inch layer of transition foam, which provides additional support and helps with motion isolation.
  • The third layer is a layer of individually wrapped coils, which provide support and help with responsiveness and bounce.
  • The bottom layer is a 7-inch layer of high-density polyfoam, which provides a sturdy foundation for the mattress.

Overall, both mattresses are well-constructed with quality materials and are designed to provide a balance of support and comfort. The Lull Hybrid mattress may be a better option for those who prefer a bit more bounce and responsiveness, while the Lull mattress may be a better fit for those who prefer a classic foam feel.

Lull Mattress Price, Trial and Warranty

The Lull mattress can be purchased online directly from the Lull website or through select online retailers. The company offers free shipping and a 100-night sleep trial with all mattress purchases, as well as a 10-year limited warranty. Additionally, some brick-and-mortar retailers may carry the Lull mattress, so it’s worth checking with your local mattress store to see if they have it in stock.

The mattress comes shrink-wrapped and is very easy to open. I usually place these mattresses right on the bed.

1 Year

However, if you choose to return the mattress after the trial period has ended, Saatva will charge a $99 transportation fee to cover the cost of pickup and disposal of the mattress. This fee is deducted from the refund amount, and the remaining balance will be refunded to your original form of payment.

It’s worth noting that Saatva does not resell returned mattresses, and instead donates them to local charities and non-profit organizations. This means that your returned mattress will not end up in a landfill and will instead go to someone in need.

Overall, Saatva’s return policy and the fact that they cover the cost of return shipping during the trial period can provide you with peace of mind and make it easy to try out the Saatva HD mattress risk-free.

The Lull mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial, which allows you to test out the mattress in the comfort of your own home. If you decide within that 100-night period that the mattress isn’t right for you, you can return it for a full refund.

In addition to the sleep trial, the Lull mattress also comes with a 10-year limited warranty. The warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship and includes repairs or replacements at no cost to the customer. The warranty also covers sagging greater than one inch, which can affect the overall comfort and support of the mattress.

It’s important to note that the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, damage caused by misuse or abuse, or changes in comfort preference. It’s always a good idea to read the warranty terms and conditions carefully to fully understand what is and isn’t covered.

Lull Mattress Complaints: A Balanced Look

While Lull mattresses generally receive positive reviews, it’s important to consider potential drawbacks before purchasing. Here’s a balanced breakdown of common complaints:

Common Complaints:

    • Firmness: Many find the Lull mattress firmer than anticipated, especially side sleepers. Consider their firmness rating (6.5-7.5) and their 365-night trial for testing.
    • Off-gassing odor: New memory foam mattresses often have a temporary odor. Lull uses CertiPUR-US® certified foams, which minimize VOCs, but airing out the mattress for a few days can help.
    • Limited support for heavier individuals: Though Lull claims to support weights up to 300 lbs, some heavier users report lack of sufficient support.
    • Customer service experiences: While rare, some negative reviews mention difficulties with returns or customer service interactions.

Addressing the Complaints:

    • Firmness: Lull emphasizes the mattress’s supportive nature, but their trial period allows for testing comfort. Consider a mattress topper for added softness.
    • Off-gassing: This should dissipate within a few days. Proper ventilation helps expedite the process.
    • Support for heavier individuals: If you weigh over 250 lbs, consider alternatives specifically designed for higher weight capacities.
    • Customer service: While most experiences are positive, if you encounter issues, directly contact Lull for resolution. Remember, online reviews often highlight negative experiences more than positive ones.

Important to remember:

    • Individual needs and preferences vary. What one person finds uncomfortable, another might find perfect.
    • Online reviews can be subjective and biased. Take them with a grain of salt and research thoroughly.
  • Lull offers a generous trial period and warranty, allowing for risk-free testing and peace of mind.

Lull Mattress FAQs

How long will the Lull Mattress last?

You can expect an average lifespan of 7 years from the Lull mattress before you notice any indentations. The mattress will breakdown faster if you are a heavy person and will last longer if you weigh less. It also depends on how often you use the mattress. If it is only used occasionally, it will get a much longer lifespan.

Do You Need a Box Spring for the Lull Mattress?

A box spring is not required. This mattress just needs to be on a firm surface which can include a box spring but also a bed with slats, an adjustable bed or even the floor.

How Does the Lull Mattress compare to the Purple Mattress?

The Lull mattress is a memory foam mattress and will have a softer feel. The Purple mattress has a grid at the top layer and will also feel soft but not as cozy. The Purple mattress will sleep cooler than the Lull mattress but a big complaint of the Purple mattress is that people can feel the grid and it sleeps too cool to be comfortable.

Can the Lull Mattress be Used on an adjustable Bed?

Yes. The Lull can be used on any adjustable bed. Because it is all foam it works well to contour when the bed rises.

Who is the Lull Mattress For?

I recommend the Lull mattress for side sleepers and combination sleepers. Stomach sleepers may want a mattress with a little more support in the middle and should go with the Lull Hybrid instead. The Lull Premium is great for dedicated side sleepers since it is a softer mattress but may sleep hot due to the extra sinking, while the original Lull is great for back sleepers.

I recommend the original lull mattress for average weight sleepers. Heavy sleepes should choose the Lull Original Premium or Lull Hybrid since it will give them better support.

Conclusion and Recommendations for the Lull Mattress

The Lull mattress is one of my favorite mattresses so far. I did not expect to be impressed with this mattress. I thought that I had tried them all and this was just a knock off. Through my Lull mattress review, I was pleasantly surprised. Memory foam can be created with varying levels of densities and layers that interact with each other. There is a new trend to blend foams with cooling gel and other materials to enhance the sleep experience. Lull created the right combination of densities, layering and cooling materials that makes for an awesome mattress.

Don’t just take my word for it. Many people have posted on Reddit that they love their Lull mattress and it a top pick among most mattress Redditors.

If you’re at all confused about which mattress to buy and you are new to memory foam, I recommend purchasing the Lull. They have a generous 365 night trial where if you don’t like it within 1 year of purchasing, you can return it for a full refund. So there’s no risk in it and chances are you will love it and save hundreds over what is available in mattress stores. This mattress strikes a very good balance of softness and support. Rather than trying and returning dozens of mattresses, you can make a smart choice by going with the Lull.

If you have any questions about this mattress, I’m happy to help. Just email me at [email protected].

  1. How does it compare to the alexander mattress? i had a leesa which was too soft and a tuft and needle that was nice at first but became too soft, in a hard way.

    Reply
  2. Hi Libby,

Thank you for your interest in our mattress. I’m one of the sleep experts with Lull and wanted to make sure you had your question answered.

The Alexander Mattress comes in different feel configurations so the differences may vary slightly based on which specific model you’re looking at. For the purposes of this exercise, I’ll use their “Alexander Medium” model as a point of reference.

The first difference is the price. As of 3/24/2016, the Alexander Medium is $899.00 for their Twin size, which is their lowest priced model. Compare that with the twin sized Lull which is $550.00 regular price (with no shipping fees or tax in most of the United States).

Compositionally, there are also differences. I’ll provide the specs for both mattresses before proceeding:

Here are Alexander Medium’s specs. This is right off their website:
    “The Medium consists of:
    1.5″ soft quilted cover
3″ of 4 lb Gel Memory Foam
2″ of 4lb Visco SmartFlow Foam
6″ 1.8 density solid Edge Support Base layer.”

    The Lull is composed of:
1.5′ of gel-infused viscoelastic (memory) foam
    1.5′ of conventional foam
    7′ of polyurethane foam

In terms of feel, I’m reluctant to make claims for you in either direction. Feel is a very subjective criteria and is difficult to assert one way or the other. For example, what might be too soft for you may be too firm for another.

A better thing to do, given your history with our competitors, may be to continue researching and giving mattresses a try until you find the one that is best for you. As you can see by our mattress’s composition, there are no frills to our design. We have a top layer to provide cushion and cooling, a second layer to provide support for the body’s natural positions, and a third layer to provide a durable foundation for the mattress. Simple.

If this is something you would like further assistance with, our sleep experts are happy to assist you. Our number is 1-800-301-5845 and we are available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends PST.

I’m writing to you on behalf of the sleep experts with Lull. Thank you for your interest in our company.

With any medical condition, a good first step is to speak with your physician to figure out what your needs may be and what opportunities and benefits the right mattress may give you. Of course, we can give you examples of customers from different backgrounds who have had great experiences with Lull, but the mattress is not a medical device.

If you would like us to discuss your issue with you and see how Lull may become a part of your life, please feel free to give us a call. Our number is 1-800-301-5845 and we are available from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week and 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

  4. Ben, I recently ordered a Lull and its a little to firm for me. I’m looking for more of a tempur pedic hug/sink feel. Can you recommend a couple of mattresses that might fit the bill at a similar price point to the Lull? Or, if there are none at that price can you recommend the least expensive of those that match the tempur pedic feel? Thanks!

  5. Help… seriously, help.

We have an m7 Sleep Number and it -still- isn’t soft enough for me, even at a setting of 15, which boggles most people.

We’ve owned every type of mattress, foam, spring, air. None of them are soft enough. Seriously, people do NOT understand how SOFT of a mattress I need.

I’m about 5’5″ and 129 lbs, which I know is an iffy weight zone for memory foam, as it can not offer good sink for lighter people. My husband is a VERY unsound sleeper and so reducing motion transfer it very, very important. I’m very sensitive to all senses. It has to be quiet where I sleep, I have to use a sleep mask or it isn’t dark enough.

I wake up frequently with uncomfortably dead limbs, stiff back, hip pain, and a general feeling of having slept on a board. I tend to do better when we have a huge, fluffy mattress topper, but those go flat. I flatten pillows after about a month and then don’t sleep well. I need everything to be the softest, most pillowy quality possible. My mother has always compared me to the princess from Princess and the Pea, if that tells you anything.

I also tend to be freezing cold when I go to bed and burning hot when I wake up, even if the temperature is the same. If we cool the room too much, though, the stiffness problem is even worse, as it feeling a sinus headache.

I really don’t know what to do. I never, never sleep well except if I take a heavy dose of sleep aid. Then I tend to wake up less stiff and more rested.

    What mattress do you recommend?

  6. Hi Ben, would. You recommend the lull or a cocoon? I do want a soft mattress. But both look great in your review!

    • Yes, in my experience a firmer mattress would definitely help. You may want to go a bit firmer than the Lull.

    • The Lull is going to feel a little softer and more responsive than the Cypress. I think the Lull is a good bet that will appeal to most sleepers.

  9. I’ve had my mattress about 7 months and have notice that it’s starting to make skweeking sounds when I get in and out of my bed. Very annoying in the middle of the night when everything is quiet. Is anyone experiencing the same problem. I’m still financing and not happy with my situation.
