USDA Organic Latex

USDA Organic Certified Latex

USDA organic certified latex is latex that has been certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to meet the USDA’s organic standards. These standards require that at least 95% of the latex be derived from organic materials, and that the remaining 5% be from non-organic materials that are approved by the USDA.

Organic latex is made from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree, which is native to South America. The sap is tapped from the tree without harming the tree, and then it is processed into latex. Organic latex is a natural material that is hypoallergenic and biodegradable. It is also a good insulator, and it can help to reduce pressure points.

There are many benefits to using organic latex. Organic latex is a natural material that is good for the environment. It is also hypoallergenic and biodegradable. Organic latex can help to reduce pressure points, and it can provide a comfortable and supportive sleep surface.

How Does the Harvest Mattress Feel?

The Harvest Green Mattress has a medium-firm feel. It is made with organic materials, including Dunlop latex, natural wool, and organic cotton. The mattress has 1,050 pocketed support coils, which provide good support and pressure relief. The mattress is also hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant.

Customer reviews of the Harvest Green Mattress are generally positive. Many customers report that the mattress is comfortable and supportive, and that it helps them sleep better. Some customers find the mattress to be too firm, but this is likely a matter of personal preference.

Overall, the Harvest Green Mattress is a good option for people who are looking for a comfortable and supportive mattress that is made with organic materials.

Here’s how each model feels.

  • Harvest Green Original: This model has a medium-firm feel that provides good support and pressure relief. Great for back and stomach sleepers.
  • Harvest Green Pillow Top: This model has a medium feel with a layer of organic latex foam on top, which provides more pressure relief. Great for side sleepers or combo sleepers
  • Harvest Green Essentials: This model has a medium firm feel that provides good support and pressure relief but not as good of pressure relief as the original or pillowtop.
  • Harvest Green Original (Double-Sided): This model has a medium-firm feel on one side and a soft feel on the other. This gives you the option of choosing the firmness that best suits your needs.

Ultimately, the best way to decide which model is right for you is to try them out in person. Most mattress stores offer a sleep trial, so you can test out each model for a few weeks before making a decision.

My Harvest Mattress Recommendation

The Harvesst is an incredible value when you take a look at all the certifications and overall construction of the mattress. I prefer the pillowtop model because it has the best pressure relief without sacrificing any support.

Harvest Mattress vs. Avocado Mattress

Both the Harvest Mattress and Avocado Mattress are popular eco-friendly mattress options. Here are some key differences between the two:

  1. Materials: Both the Harvest Mattress and Avocado mattress use organic cotton, natural latex foam, and steel coils in their mattress construction. They are basically the same mattress along with both being hand tufted, and both mattresses are free from harmful chemicals and synthetic materials.

  2. Firmness options: Harvest Mattress comes in two firmness options – medium and firm, while Avocado Mattress offers three firmness options – plush, medium, and firm. They both have an budget friendly model, a vegan option but Harvest also makes double sided mattresses that will exted the life of the mattress because you can flip it to wear more evenly.

  3. Price: Harvest Mattress is generally more affordable than Avocado Mattress. However, Avocado Mattress offers a higher-end luxury version many more layers and luxury materials that will have a more plush feel but at a considerably higher price.

  4. Trial and warranty: Both companies offer similar trial and warranty periods. Harvest Mattress offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty, while Avocado Mattress offers a 365-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty.

Ultimately, the choice between Harvest Mattress and Avocado Mattress will come down to personal preference and specific needs. It’s always a good idea to read reviews, compare features, and consider factors such as budget, firmness preference, and eco-friendliness when making a decision.

Charles P. Rogers is a company with a rich history. They have been making mattresses and bedding since 1855. It is the longest continuously operating mattress manufacturer in the United States. They are best known for their brass beds which became a popular alternative in starting in the 1850s when wooden beds were known to be more hospitable to bedbugs. The company continues to innovate to this day by bringing new products to market that build upon their institutional knowledge and history of craftsmanship including most recently, the Real Bed.

If you want to own a piece of Americana in your bedroom, you can start with a Charles. P. Rogers bed and mattress. They even have a small archive of mattress advertisements on their website. Below is an advertisement for their beds which were featured in some of the top New York hotels at the time.

Overview of the Real Bed

Here’s a video overview of the Real Bed and what I really think of it. This is a heavy mattress, weighing 139 lb.s in a queen size, so I recommend having 2 people to set up, you can go it alone but it’s much easier with help, especially if you need to get it up a flight of stairs, there’s also an option to purchase white glove delivery for an extra $199 where they will set it up in the room of your choice and haul away the packaging. Once you open this mattress, it’s ready to sleep on right away.

Construction of the Real Bed

While this is not an organic mattress, it is made with all-natural material. Cotton, wool, latex, steel springs and some bamboo-derived rayon. It measures 11.5 inches thick so putting sheets on it will be no problem.

My Charles P. Rogers Real Bed Findings

There are no fancy new foams or springs in this mattress, just quality materials, and craftsmanship. While the Real Bed is the Charles P. Rogers bed in a box offering, they offer the same quality you will find in their other mattresses. I am partial to mattress companies that make their own mattresses and certainly this one is no exception given their long track record and consistently high marks from more traditional review publications like Consumer Reports.

Starting with the organic cotton cover, you will find that the mattress is hand-tufted to eliminate the need for glue to hold the latex in place. This gives the mattress a more consistent feel and will prevent you from rolling towards the middle toward your partner at night.

This is a medium-firm mattress. While it feels plush with the latex and tufting, you don’t sink into the mattress all that much because the latex springs to life quickly making it easy to change positions. It also means the mattress is breathable and won’t trap heat like a foam mattress.
pushing on the real bed
This mattress also has excellent edge support. I attribute that to both the springs and latex. Even some hybrid foam mattresses can have poor edge support if they add too much foam to the top layer. That isn’t the case with this mattress.
sitting on the real bed
Here you can see how much by 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. It sunk in about half an inch.
real bed sink
For side sleeping, you get really good lower back support. My hips also felt supports and the mattress didn’t bother my shoulders. As long as you have a pillow with the proper height, should pain shouldn’t be an issue. If you prefer a really plush mattress, you can add the Real Bed Topper which is a 2.5-inch thick pad with latex and nano springs. I have never come across a mattress topper with springs and this would certainly keep the bed from becoming too squishy.
real bed side sleeping
This mattress also performed well for stomach sleeping. If you are a dedicated stomach sleeper you may want something a little firmer though.

real bed stomach sleeping

This mattress really excelled at back sleeping. I don’t normally sleep on my back but if I had to, I would choose this mattress. The Real Bed can be used on an adjustable base. No need for a box spring either, in the picture below it is on a bed from West Elm that has wooden slats.

Final Thoughts on the Real Bed by Charles P. Rogers

For the money, this is one of the best values for a natural mattress. Aside from it being all-natural, it’s just plain comfortable. It comes with a 100-night trial, 25-year warranty with free shipping and returns. The Real Bed strikes the right balance with springs and latex. It has just the right amount of bounce without going overboard with the use of latex. I could tell immediately that There’s a reason why this company has lasted so long and there’s no doubt in my mind that the Real Bed will be a strong player in the bed in a box category for a long time to come.

Birch Mattress

The Birch mattress is an all-natural mattress that is getting rave reviews and selling like crazy. Recently many online brands have come up with a natural mattress offering as it is a growing category. Mattress shoppers are waking up to the fact that mattresses made with quality latex and springs provide durability and comfort that is hard to get in an all-foam mattress. While the prices on average are higher, there is a lot of value to be had with these types of mattresses and the Birch mattress is no exception.

The Birch Mattress comes with a standard 100-night trial where you can try it out in your own home for 100 nights and if you don’t like it for whatever reason, it is a free return. It also has a 25-year warranty against manufacturer defects. Typically mattresses that use latex as the comfort layer skew firmer. The Birch has a pillow top option, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress, for an extra $400 to make it more suitable for people that want a plush feel and is overall my top pick for a natural mattress.

Overview of the Birch Mattress

I have slept on dozens of natural mattresses with similar construction to the Birch Mattress, Including the Avocado Green Mattress and Naturepedic line of mattresses but each still has a distinct feel. I found the Birch Matress to be a medium firm feel among the spring latex mattresses I have tried and the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress to be a little softer than the Avocado Green Mattress with Pillow Top. Here’s a quick video overview of my thoughts on the Birch Mattress.

Construction of the Birch Mattress

Birch Mattress Construction

Birch Mattress Construction

Below are the construction details of the Birch according to their website.

The Birch Mattress is made with all natural materials which means there is no foam and no off gassing to worry about which is typical when opening a new mattress with memory foam. Instead it has natural latex, some people call this latex foam but it’s basically rubber from a rubber tree plant.

1 Cover – Organic Cotton Cover
The Birch Cover is made using natural, organic cotton. It is designed to be highly breathable with a subtle stretch and soft touch. The Organic cotton cover is the layer closest to your body and so having it be organic and chemical free is reassuring.

2 FR Cover – Wool
Each Birch Mattress uses natural wool fibers with rayon as the fire retardant layer, free of plastics to provide protection.

3 Comfort Layer – Birch Wool
100% all natural & organic Birch Wool provides unparalleled comfort and temperature regulation. Birch Wool is designed to retain shape with a natural elasticity of each fiber.

4 Pressure Relief Layer – Natural Latex
Natural Talalay latex with OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications, provides response to cushion your pressure points while giving support. Our latex is carefully managed to ensure consistency.

5 Support Layer – Individually Wrapped Coils
Hundreds of individual steel coils help to cradle your body and provide support, while also limiting motion transfer. Additionally, the reinforced perimeter coils provide best in class edge support.

6 Base Layer – Wool Batting
100% all natural & organic wool batting to provide stability and durability to the entire mattress.

How Much Does the Birch Mattress Cost?

Below are the current prices of the Birch before any discounts. Right now Birch is offering $200 off these prices on their website. Keep in mind that the Birch Luxe Mattress will cost $400 more for each respective size.

My Birch Mattress Findings

Your Birch mattress will arrive compressed in a box about a week after you place your order. No need to schedule a delivery. Birch will automatically donate 1% of the purchase price to the National Forest Foundation. Some companies will actually add this as an optional cost but Birch will pay the 1% which is a nice touch. They also purchase carbon offsets!

Birch Box

For an extra $99 you can buy accidental damage coverage through a company called Mulberry. This covers the folllowing:

Accidental stains such as:
● Wine, Pizza sauce, and any other food and beverage stains
● Make-up, Nail Polish, Cosmetics
● Pen, Crayons, Pencils
● Human and Pet bodily fluids

Accidental damages such as:
● Rips, Burns, and Punctures
● Common accidents from children or pets
● Breakage that causes structural breakdown
● Chipping, cracking, and breakage from normal wear and tear

While this is a great option, I think a good mattress protector will address most of these problems and will also keep the mattress hygienic.

This mattress is 11 inches deep and is heavier than a typical foam mattress because latex and steel are heavy so you may need some help getting this setup.

This mattress is ready to sleep on right away. I didn’t have any concern with off-gassing or waiting for the mattress to take shape because the latex will instantly spring to live along with the coil system underneath.

As you can see below, it has great edge support and I attribute that to the quality coil system. Yes, lots of people are still concerned about being able to put their shoes on at the side of their bed and the Birch Natural Mattress and even the Birch Luxe Mattress with extra layer of latex pass with flying colors.

Birch mattress edge support

Here’s how the mattress looks just a few minutes after opening. There’s no need to to wait for it to inflate like a typical foam mattress. It’s ready to use right away.

birch unboxing

You will get some motion transfer due to the spring system but it is a pocket coil system so the coils work independently to keep it to a minimum.  As you can see below there is some sinkage in this mattress and the top layer as a horizontal quilted pattern to give it a slightly more plush feel. I like that it wasn’t stitched too tight either, this allows for maximum contouring with the Talalay layer underneath.

Birch Sink

My Birch Mattress Recommendation

I think the Birch is best suited for back and stomach sleepers. Side sleepers that are seeking a firmer mattress will like it but I think they should consider going with the Birch Luxe or adding the Birch mattress topper. Here’s a photo of me on my side to illustrate contouring.

BIrch Mattress Contouring

My Birch Mattress Recommendation

Birch has made a strong showing with this mattress and it is great to see more choices in the natural mattress category. The Birch mattress retails for $1,449 in a queen size while the Avocado retails for $1,899 in a queen size making the Birch Mattress more affordable than the Avocado. The Birch is a great choice if you want a mattress that is temperature neutral, does not contain any foam and made with renewable materials. Back and Stomach sleepers are best suited for this mattress and side sleepers will probably want to add the pillow top. However, I found the Birch to be just slightly softer than the Avocado and a slightly firmer than the Awara Mattress.

Keep in mind, you get a 100 nighth sleep trial with the Birch mattress so there’s no risk in trying it out in your own home.

Winkbeds Eco Cloud Review

Winkbeds has expanded its offering of mattresses to include Hybrid, Foam and now an Eco-friendly option called the Eco Cloud. This is an all-natural mattress made with steel springs, natural latex, wool and organic cotton. There are many natural mattresses on the market with similar construction but the Eco Cloud has a feel all its own. In keeping with the Winkbeds tradition, it offers a more luxurious feel where you get more cradling than the competitors. But you will pay a bit more for the premium. A queen size currently retails for $1,799 which is considerably more than the budget-friendly Awara at $1,199.

Overview of the Winkbed Eco Cloud

Here’s a video overview of the Eco Cloud where you can see how it performs and peek inside the mattress to see how it is constructed.

Construction of the Winkbeds Eco Cloud

Winkbeds Eco Cloud Construction

Here are the construction details as listed on their website along with a picture (ab0ve) to show you the actual layers.

ORGANIC COTTON COVER & NEW ZEALAND WOOL

A soft quilt cover made from 100% organic cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool ensure you sleep cool, clean and dry.

4″ TALALAY LATEX COMFORT LAYER

4″ of premium Talalay is textured and fabricated into targeted comfort layers to provide firmer support for the low back & lumbar, and softer support in the shoulders & hips, for an unparalleled zero-pressure experience.

5 ZONE INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED INNERSPRING SUPPORT SYSTEM

Made from recycled steel, our innersprings are tempered 3 times and provide targeted pushback support for heavier areas of the body.

EXTRA-EDGE™ ANTI-SAG SUPPORT SYSTEM

Our proprietary innerspring support core is firmer and more supportive along the edges, allowing you to sleep edge to edge without any sag.

How Much Does the Winkbed Eco Cloud Cost?

The cost of the mattress varies depending on the size and other features you select, such as a foundation or adjustable base. Here are the current prices for the WinkBed EcoCloud mattress:

  • Twin: $1,599
  • Twin XL: $1,799
  • Full: $1,999
  • Queen: $2,199
  • King: $2,599
  • California King: $2,599

Please note that these prices are subject to change and do not include any discounts or promotions that may be available at the time of purchase. Additionally, the prices listed above are for the mattress only and do not include any accessories or add-ons.

My Eco Cloud Findings

I found this mattress to be just a bit on the softer end of the spectrum compared to others with similar construction. I attribute that mostly to the 4 inch Talalay latex layer at the top. Here you can see how much sinkage is produced with my 14 lb. bowling ball.

Winkbed Eco Cloud Softness

Here’s another picture showing me pushing into the mattress with a good amount of force. I just want to illustrate how much give you can achieve with the mattress.

Winkbed Push

As I mentioned in the video, this mattress doesn’t retain much heat and that’s typical of a natural mattress like this one. If you are coming from a traditional spring mattress, you shouldn’t notice a difference in sleeping hotter.

I’m glad Winkbeds incorporated Talalay latex into the top layer as it gives it a nice plush feel without too much sinkage. This mattress is bouncy without a lot of motion transfer. They use a proprietary spring system with zones across the mattress to even you out and provide support for your hips making this a great choice for any type of sleeper, even stomach sleepers. The perimeter coils are firmer so you also get great edge support and won’t feel like you are going to roll off the mattress.

Finally, Winkbeds did a great job with the fabric on this mattress. It’s not stitched too tight like others I have tried. That means there is more material to allow the latex and springs to work. Some mattresses that are stitched too tight don’t offer as good of contouring as this one.

The WinkBed Eco Cloud vs. Avocado Mattress

Both are known for their eco-friendly and sustainable materials. Here’s a brief comparison between the two:

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. On the other hand, the Avocado mattress is available in two options – a hybrid that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool, and an all-latex mattress.
  2. Firmness: Both mattresses offer different firmness levels to choose from. WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while Avocado offers firmness options ranging from medium-firm to plush.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body, thanks to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils.
  4. Price: The WinkBed EcoCloud is slightly more expensive than the Avocado, with prices ranging from $1,599 to $2,499, while the Avocado mattress costs between $899 to $2,199.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. However, the Avocado mattress is certified organic by GOTS and GOLS, making it a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option.

Overall, both the WinkBed EcoCloud and Avocado mattresses are high-quality options that offer excellent comfort and support. It ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget when deciding between the two.

The Winkbed EcoCloud vs. the Birch Mattress

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. The Birch mattress is also a hybrid but uses organic cotton, Talalay latex, and individually wrapped coils.
  2. Firmness: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while the Birch mattress offers two firmness options: medium-firm and plush.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body due to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils.
  4. Price: The WinkBed EcoCloud is slightly more expensive than the Birch, with prices ranging from $1,599 to $2,499, while the Birch mattress costs between $1,049 to $1,899.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. However, Birch has a more significant focus on sustainability, with certifications from GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX.

EcoCloud vs. Awara Mattress

The WinkBed EcoCloud and Awara mattresses are both excellent options with unique features and benefits. Here’s a brief comparison between the two:

  1. Construction: The WinkBed EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool. The Awara mattress is also a hybrid but uses Dunlop latex, individually wrapped coils, and organic cotton.
  2. Firmness: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes in medium-firm, while the Awara mattress is firm.
  3. Support: Both mattresses provide excellent support to the body due to their hybrid construction that combines foam, latex, and coils. However, the Awara mattress may be too firm for some sleepers and may not provide enough pressure relief.
  4. Price: The Awara mattress is slightly more affordable than the WinkBed EcoCloud, with prices ranging from $999 to $1,799. The WinkBed EcoCloud costs between $1,599 to $2,599.
  5. Eco-friendliness: Both mattresses are made with eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton and natural latex. However, the WinkBed EcoCloud has a more significant focus on sustainability, with certifications from GOTS, GOLS, and OEKO-TEX.

Overall, both the WinkBed EcoCloud and Awara mattresses are excellent options that offer comfort and support while being environmentally conscious. It ultimately comes down to personal preference and budget when deciding between the two. If you prefer a medium-firm mattress with a focus on sustainability, the WinkBed EcoCloud may be the better choice. If you prefer a firm mattress with a lower price point, the Awara mattress may be the better option.

WinkBed Ecocloud for Sex

the WinkBed EcoCloud is a good option for sex. It has a hybrid construction that combines latex, pocketed coils, and wool, which provides a good balance of support and comfort that can enhance sexual activity. The latex layer can offer responsive bounce and motion isolation, while the pocketed coils provide a sturdy base for a stable surface. Additionally, the breathable wool layer can help regulate temperature and wick away moisture, making it a comfortable surface to sleep and engage in physical activity. Overall, the WinkBed EcoCloud’s construction can provide a comfortable and supportive surface for sexual activity.

Talalay vs Dunlop

  1. Production Process: Dunlop latex is the original latex production method and is made by mixing natural latex sap with curing agents, pouring the mixture into a mold, and baking it. Talalay latex is a newer production process that involves the same initial steps as Dunlop but adds an additional step of vacuum sealing the mold and flash freezing it before baking it. This process makes Talalay latex more uniform and consistent than Dunlop.
  2. Density: Dunlop latex is denser and firmer than Talalay latex due to its production process. It has a heavier feel and is often used as a support layer in mattresses. Talalay latex is lighter and more buoyant due to the aeration process that gives it a more consistent cell structure. It is often used as a comfort layer in mattresses.
  3. Comfort: Both Dunlop and Talalay latex provide excellent comfort and support. However, Talalay latex is often preferred for its superior pressure relief, thanks to its more consistent cell structure and buoyancy.
  4. Durability: Both types of latex are known for their durability and can last for many years. However, Talalay latex may be more resistant to compression and sagging over time due to its more consistent structure.

Overall, both Dunlop and Talalay latex can be excellent options in a mattress, depending on your preferences and needs. Dunlop latex may be preferred for its density and firmness, while Talalay latex may be preferred for its superior pressure relief and buoyancy.

Winkbed EcoCloud Trial and Warranty

The WinkBed EcoCloud comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect from each:

  1. Sleep Trial: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes with a 120-night sleep trial, which allows you to test out the mattress in the comfort of your own home. If you decide that the mattress isn’t right for you, you can return it for a full refund within the trial period. WinkBed offers free pickup and removal of the mattress if you decide to return it.
  2. Warranty: The WinkBed EcoCloud comes with a lifetime warranty, which covers any defects in materials or workmanship for as long as you own the mattress. The warranty is non-prorated, meaning that there is no gradual reduction in coverage over time. If you experience any issues with the mattress, WinkBed will repair or replace it at no cost to you.

It’s important to note that the warranty and sleep trial are subject to certain conditions and limitations. For example, the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, or damage caused by improper use or care. Be sure to read the full terms and conditions of the warranty and sleep trial before making your purchase.

WinkBed has been featured on several TV shows and news segments, including Good Morning America, The Today Show, and Fox Business. In these appearances, WinkBed has been highlighted for its high-quality construction, eco-friendly materials, and comfortable sleep surface. Additionally, WinkBed has been featured in several online publications and blogs, where it has received positive reviews and high marks for its durability and support.

My Eco Cloud Recommendation

The Eco Cloud costs more than some of the competing brands but to me, that’s not a deal-breaker. For a few hundred dollars more you get a mattress that is made in the USA, crafted in a factory in Wisconsin by people that have been at their jobs for decades and really know their craft. The end result is a quality mattress that will hold up over time.

This mattress comes with a 120-night trial where you can sleep on it at home for 120 nights and if you don’t like it, for whatever reason, it’s a free return. They also offer a lifetime warranty which means as long as you own the mattress, Winkbeds will replace it if it is found to be defective. They also have a comfort exchange where you can exchange the mattress after the trial expires and buy a different Winkbed at 50% off.

The Eco Cloud is a great choice for people who are looking for a quality natural mattress that is Made in the USA with a firmness that will appeal to most sleepers.

The Bloom Hybrid mattress is an all natural offering from Brooklyn Bedding.  I found this mattress to have a nice, plush feel. Because the comfort layer is latex instead of foam it will be easier to move around on even though you will sink in a fair amount. Because this mattress uses premium materials like Talalay latex, organic cotton and Joma wool, the price point is going to be higher but the mattress will be more durable and will have a longer lifespan. A queen size currently retails for $1,799 before discounts.

Overview of the Bloom Hybrid

The Bloom Hybrid is made in the USA out of the Brooklyn Bedding mattress factory in Arizona. This company is known for fast shipping times so don’t be surprised if you get your mattress delivered in less than 5 days. This mattress comes with a 120-night trial where you can test it out in your home to make sure its the right fit. If not, returns are free. Just a few years ago this was unheard of with a natural mattress due to the cost but competition has sort of forced them to offer it.

How Much Does the Bloom Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the mattress as of this writing. Typically they offer a 20% discount which is shown in the table.

Construction of the Bloom Hybrid from Brooklyn Bedding

Bloom Mattress Inside

Below are the construction details from their site. I always like to cut open the mattress so you can see the layers up close.

  • Sustainably sourced Joma Wool™ and organic cotton are combined in a plush top cover, providing exceptional breathability and moisture wicking…naturally.
  • A 3” top layer of Talalay latex delivers a unique buoyant quality that relaxes muscles and relieves tension, lifting away the pressures of the day while you sleep. Made from natural Talalay rubber, Talalay latex is certified Oeko-Tex class 1 safe.
  • An 8” base of up to 1,189 individually encased Quantum™ Edge coils delivers ultimate pressure point relief while decreasing motion transfer.
  • A 1” high density foam base adds durability to the mattress while reinforcing individually encased coils as they compress.
  • Made in the USA

My Bloom Hybrid Findings

When reviewing hybrid latex mattresses like the Bloom it’s important to compare them to mattresses of similar construction. Compared to the Awara, the Bloom Hybrid is a considerably softer mattress. That is in part because it does not have the tufting found in the Awara. I found the Bloom hybrid to be just a little bit softer than the pillow top version of the Avocado.

Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the Bloom.

Bloom Hybrid SInkage

This mattress will have some motion transfer since it has springs. It will also have more bounce than a typical hybrid because it has both springs and latex.

I found that I also sank into this mattress considerably more than the Awara and Avocado. Again, due to lack of tufting and the cover is not as tightly stitched to the rest of the mattress.

My Bloom Mattress Hybrid Recommendation

This mattress is very competitively priced given the construction. What I first noticed when I received the mattress was how heavy it is. Latex is not cheap or light but it’s durable and has a very unique feel. I think they hit the mark with feel on this mattress to provide a universal appeal.

If you are sensitive to foam smells or are just looking for a more natural alternative without breaking the bank, the Bloom Hybrid is a great choice. In comparison, the Bloom all latex, this mattress is going to have a more traditional feel due to the spring system and will probably be a better fit for most.

The Awara mattress is a hybrid mattress that combines both foam and coils to provide support and comfort. It is made with natural and organic materials, such as organic latex and cotton, as well as recycled steel coils. The Awara mattress is designed to be supportive and pressure-relieving, while also being environmentally friendly. It is also marketed as a durable and long-lasting mattress that can support a wide range of body types and sleeping positions. The Awara mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

The Awara mattress is a natural mattress made with Dunlop latex, cotton and a 5 zone pocket coil base. For the money, it’s hard to beat. To top it off the mattress comes with a 365 night trial period where you can basically have it for an entire year and if not happy, return it for a full refund. You also get the Awara Forever Warranty which protects you from defects as long as you own the mattress and an option to finance the mattress through Affirm for as low as 0% APR. A queen size retails for $1,499 but you can get one now at $1,299 through our discount code.

Overview of the Awara Mattress

The Awara will come shipped in a bag to your doorstep about a week after placing your order. It is roll packed which makes transport into your house and the room of your choice easy. Here’s a picture of the bag. Inside the bag it is sealed with plastic so don’t worry if it is left out in the rain.

Awara Pakaging

Here’s what it looks like out of the bag.

Since this is an all natural with latex and springs, it expands almost instantly and is ready to sleep on right away. Here’s a picture of it just minutes after opening.

My Awara Findings

Being a natural mattress, it will skew firmer than a mattress made with foam. Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks on the mattress.

Awara Mattress Sinkage

This mattress has a support system of 9-inch coils for proper alignment. This is a 5 zone pocket coil system which provides support where you need it and will evenly distribute weight. Firmer coils are found along the perimeter to provide better edge support.

Here’s a look inside the mattress where you can see each layer. Aside from the pocket coils and latex, there’s also a layer of wool which helps with temperature regulation.

Inside the Awara

This is what the inside of the top layer looks like.

awara top layer

The dunlop latex has tiny holes in it which are made when the latex is poured into a mold. This provides more breathability.

dunlop holes

The video below shows how each layer reacts inside the mattress. It is on the firmer end of the spectrum so you will sleep “on” this mattress rather than, “in” it.

Awara Mattress vs. Avocado Mattress

The Awara and Avocado mattresses are both hybrid mattresses made with natural and organic materials, but they have some differences that may influence your purchasing decision.

One of the main differences between the Awara and Avocado mattresses is the firmness level. The Awara is rated as a medium-firm mattress, while the Avocado comes in two firmness levels: medium-firm and firm. This means that the Avocado may be a better option for those who prefer a firmer mattress, while the Awara may be better suited for those who prefer a medium-firm feel.

Another difference is in the construction of the mattresses. The Awara has a simpler construction, with fewer layers than the Avocado. The Avocado has a more complex design, with more layers that include organic latex, wool, and other materials. This may result in a more customized feel for the sleeper and potentially better pressure relief.

The Avocado also offers the option to add a pillow-top for an additional fee, which can provide extra cushioning and comfort. The Awara does not have this option.

In terms of price, the Awara is generally less expensive than the Avocado. However, the Avocado does come with some additional features, such as the option to add a pillow-top and a longer warranty.

Overall, both mattresses are high-quality options made with natural and organic materials. The choice between the Awara and Avocado will largely depend on personal preferences for firmness level and construction, as well as budget considerations.

Awara vs. Birch Mattress

The Awara and Birch mattresses are both hybrid mattresses that feature natural and organic materials, but they have some differences that may influence your purchasing decision.

One of the main differences between the Awara and Birch mattresses is the firmness level. The Awara is rated as a medium-firm mattress, while the Birch comes in two firmness levels: medium and medium-firm. This means that the Birch may be a better option for those who prefer a slightly softer or firmer feel.

Another difference is in the construction of the mattresses. The Awara has a simpler construction, with fewer layers than the Birch. The Birch has a more complex design, with more layers that include organic latex, wool, and other materials. This may result in a more customized feel for the sleeper and potentially better pressure relief.

The Birch mattress also features a natural cotton cover that is free from harmful chemicals and has a soft, breathable feel. The Awara cover is made with organic cotton and wool, but it does not have the same level of certification and testing as the Birch cover.

In terms of price, the Awara is generally less expensive than the Birch. However, the Birch does come with some additional features, such as the option to choose between two firmness levels and a longer sleep trial period.

Overall, both mattresses are high-quality options made with natural and organic materials. The choice between the Awara and Birch will largely depend on personal preferences for firmness level, construction, and budget considerations.

Awara Mattress Warranty

The Awara mattress comes with a lifetime warranty, which is one of the longest warranties in the mattress industry. The warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, including sagging greater than 1.5 inches, splits or cracks in the foam, and defects in the zipper or cover.

If a defect covered by the warranty occurs, Awara will repair or replace the mattress at no cost to the owner. The warranty is valid for the original purchaser of the mattress and is non-transferable.

It’s important to note that the warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, or damage caused by misuse or improper care. The mattress must be used with an appropriate foundation or bed frame, and proper care and maintenance must be followed to ensure that the mattress remains in good condition.

My Awara Recommendation

Natural mattresses are not only better for the planet but they usually last longer than foam mattresses. Natural latex is often more durable than foam giving the mattress a longer lifespan. You also get to sleep on this mattress right away and not have to worry about any off-gassing.

If you are primarily a back or stomach sleeper this is a wonderful mattress. If you prefer a firmer mattress and sleep on your side, this is also an excellent choice. For the money, it’s hard to beat the value you get with the Awara Mattress.

Parachute is best known for its bedding. They make beautiful sheets, duvets and pillows. Recently they expanded into bath products such as towels and bath mats and now have showrooms in Los Angeles, Oregon and New York. Parachute has now launched their own mattress. It is made with natural materials so there’s no foam, making it a more sustainable product. Currently, a queen size retails for $1,899.

The Parachute mattress joins other bedding companies like Boll and Branch that also recently introduced their own mattress. Boll and Branch makes Fair Trade, organic cotton bedding and their mattresses is made with springs and latex.

The Parachute Mattress Shipping and Trial Period

Parachute offers a 90 day trial for their mattress. This means you get to try it out for free in your home and if you don’t like it, returns are free within that 90 days. Parachute will come pick up the mattress for free. Shipping to your house is free as well.

Your mattress will be hand-delivered via complimentary white glove service via Pilot Freight Services. You may schedule the delivery at your convenience. White glove service includes set up and old mattress removal.

It will take 7-10 business days to receive your mattress. It takes 2-3 business days to manufacture the mattress. Then we will reach out via email to schedule your delivery with our white glove partner, Pilot Freight Services, at a time that is convenient for you.

If you decide to return your mattress, we’ll come pick it up for free.

From what I could glean from the webiste, this mattress will not come in a box. It should come full size and you will get white glove delivery. This means they can also haul away your old mattress too!

Construction of the Parachute Mattress

Here are the construction details as listed on their website.

parachute mattress overiew

  • Made to order in the U.S.A.
  • Made of pure New Zealand wool, 100% organic cotton and tempered steel.
  • Foam-free.
  • Contains 5x the coils of a standard mattress.
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and GOTS certified. Learn more.
  • Comes with a 10 year warranty. Learn more.

BOTTOM WOOL INSULATOR PAD

A layer of sustainable, hypoallergenic, flame-resistant wool protects the bedframe from the pocketed coils.

POCKETED COILS

Soft and firm coils create comfort, stability and support zones, allowing for proper spinal alignment.

MID WOOL INSULATOR PAD

A layer of sustainable, hypoallergenic, flame-resistant wool protects the microcoils from the pocketed coils.

MICROCOILS

Three tiers of tiny steel coils react individually to pressure, contouring to your body and isolating its every move.

WOOL COMFORT LAYER

Two sheets of pure New Zealand wool naturally regulate body temperature and keep you cozy.

COTTON COVER

Quilted, 100% organic cotton for a soft finish.

My Parachute Mattress Recommendation

Given the specs of this mattress, it should provide an interesting feel. The fact that they don’t use latex or foam is a departure from how most mattresses are made. Normally a mattress is made with at least one of these components for the comfort layer. Parachute makes up for this by using microcoils and wool as a comfort layer which should provide much more breathability.

This mattress is also tufted which eliminates the need for glue to hold the layers together.

parachute mattress tuftingPeople looking for a natural mattress free of both foam and latex should definitely consider this mattress.

Happsy Mattress
<h2 class="entry-title"><a href="https://sleepsherpa.com/happsy-mattress-review-affordable-natural-mattress-box/" rel="bookmark">Happsy Mattress Review</a></h2>

The Happsy Mattress is a mattress that uses primarily organic materials such at GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) Cotton and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) latex in addition to a spring system. A queen size Happsy retails for $1,399 which puts it at a very competitive price point for an all-natural mattress. What really sets this apart from the competition is just how many certifications and accolades this mattress has.

Overview of the Happsy Mattress

The Happsy mattress can be ordered direct from their website and will arrive about a week after placing your order. Unlike most online mattress companies, the Happsy will come in multiple boxes That’s because the latex layer cannot be compressed like foam and so will come in a separate box. Below is a photo of what I received for my Happsy mattress plus topper. The mattress will ship to your door though so there’s no need to schedule a delivery.

The Happsy comes with a 120 night trial where if you don’t like it, you can return it for a full refund. This is still rare with natural mattresses. There aren’t many brands that offer a trial period. Additionally, this mattress comes with a 10 year warranty.

Below is a video overview of the Happsy. I’m sitting on it with the optional latex topper.

Construction of the Happsy Mattress

The Happsy Mattress is made with the following materials:

Organic cotton fabric cover
Organic wool batting
2″ organic latex
8″ pocketed springs
organic cotton batting

Happsy Mattress Construction

How Much Does the Happsy Mattress Cost?

Below are the prices of the Happsy mattress as listed on their website.

Mattress Only

  • King: $1,699
  • California King: $1,699
  • Queen: $1,399
  • Full: $1,199
  • Twin XL: $999
  • Twin: $899

Mattress Plus Topper

Twin $998
Twin XL $1,078
Full $1,448
Queen $1,598
King $1998
Cal King $1,998

Happsy Accessories

Happsy just doesn’t stop with a mattress. They also offer a mattress protector, pillows and even a natural crib mattress.

My Happsy Mattress Findings

The Happsy comes with or without a topper. If you go with the topper option just note that it fits on top of the mattress and is not integrated. This shouldn’t be an issue though when you put sheets over everything.

Happsy Mattress Topper

Below is a photo of how much sinkage you can expect with the mattress topper option. I like a more plush feel and if you do too, then I strongly recommend getting the topper.

Happsy Mattress with Topper

Below you can see how much sinkage you get without the topper. There is a very pronounced difference here.

Happsy Mattress Sinkage

The Happsy is a bouncy mattress because it is springs and latex. Here’s  video showing motion transfer on the mattress.

Is the Happsy Mattress right for you?

People seeking out a firm natural mattress will want to go with the Happsy. If you want a plush feel, I strongly recommend adding the latex topper. Latex has a unique feel and is instantly responsive, unlike memory foam which lags. Latex is a more resilient material in that it will last longer than foam so it is a worthwhile investment assuming you like the feel.

The field of online organic / natural mattresses is still limited so it’s welcoming to see the Happsy come in at such a competitive price point.

For reference, a queen Avocado Mattress retails for $1,399 and $1,799 for the pillow top option whereas a queen Happsy is $1,199 and $1,598 for the pillow top.

If you are looking for a softer natural mattress, check out the Cedar Mattress from Brentwood Home.

The EOS Mattress from Naturepedic is a 12-inch organic mattress that can be fully customized. That means you can choose to go with springs and latex or if you have a latex allergy, go the all spring route. Naturepedic will substitute the top latex layer with micro-coils that provide great cushioning and support underneath the thick mattress cover.

The EOS is a bit more expensive than many of the online competitors but it is a quality mattress inside and out. There aren’t that many organic spring mattresses out there that are this customizable. This is the only natural mattress I have reviewed where you can substitute the latex layer for a spring layer to avoid allergy issues.

After you order your mattress it should arrive in about 7-10 days. It comes in multiple boxes as seen below.

Naturepedic Boxes

You get assembly instruction which shows you how to set up the mattress.

Naturepedic Assembly Instructions

Each box is labeled so you know which one to open first.

Naturepedic Box Label

Below is a video overview of the mattress after it has been assembled.

The EOS mattress doesn’t have a free trial like most online brands but they do have a 90-day comfort guarantee where if you don’t like the feel of your mattress, they can switch out some of the components. Here are the details of the comfort guarantee from their website.

90 Day Comfort Exchange Policy – Swap any 3″ comfort layer within 90 days of your purchase and only pay for shipping. Just fill out a simple form at naturepedic.com/layerswap and order your new layers. Then, schedule a pickup for your original layers using a prepaid return label, and you’re all set. You’ll be issued a full refund once we receive your original layers back (so long as they’re received back within 90 days of your original invoice date). It’s that easy! Visit the EOS FAQ for more information.

Return Policy – We offer a 90-day money back guarantee, less ALL actual shipping charges (including those associated with any promotions) so long as your order was placed directly with Naturepedic. Orders placed with other retailers follow the return policy of those retailers. Orders must be received in a clean undamaged condition. Before returning, however, we encourage you to take advantage of our 90-day comfort layer swap program. We are confident that you’ll find just the right configuration for you! Please visit naturepedic.com/layerswap to place your order.

Construction of the Naturepedic EOS

Below are the construction details of the EOS.

12″ Height

3″ organic latex or micro coil option

8″ pocket coil system for base layer

Organic cotton cover with organic cotton filling for extra padding

GOTS certified organic wool batting

PLA Comfort Layer

No flame retardant chemicals

90-day comfort exchange

Pricing for the EOS is the same with or without latex

Twin $1,799
Twin XL $1,999
Full $2,799
Queen $2,999
King $3,599
Cal King $3,599

My Naturepedic EOS Findings

Right from the beginning, this product screams quality. The boxes are clean and well labeled and the contents are packaged neat and secure.

Here’s the mattress cover out of the box. This is a thick cover that not only keeps everything together, it provides a nice padded surface for sleeping. There was also no smell to this. Sometimes an all organic cover can smell like a sheep due to the wool batting but this one didn’t smell at all.

Naturepedic Mattress Cover

Even the zipper is very high quality. This is important because the mattress is designed to hold all the materials tightly together which means that you sometimes need to pull hard on the zipper. Having a quality zipper makes the job easier and less likely that you will break it.

Naturepedic Zipper

For my review I had a soft and firm configuration on a queen size mattress. This allowed me to test both ends of the firmness spectrum. I also opted for a latex layer instead of the microcoils so I can’t really speak to how the microcoils will feel.

Below is a video of me dropping a bolwing ball on the soft side of the mattress.

And here is the same bowling ball on the firm side of the mattress.  I found the soft side had a bit more bounce.

Here’s another view for comparison that shows how much the ball sinks on each side. Below is the firm side.

Naturepedic Firm Side

And here is the soft side.

Naturepedic Soft Side

As you can see there is a significant difference between the soft and firm versions. Of course you can go with a medium firm as well.

Despite being a spring and latex/coil mattress, it handles motion transfer very well. That’s because not only the latex and microcoil systems are separate pieces, the base pocket coil system is two separate units as well. As you can see in the picture below.

Naturepedic Coil System

My Naturepedic EOS Recommendation

Naturepedic is a leading natural mattress manufacturer. They have all kinds of certifications that are a testament to the quality of their product. Their products are made by Amish craftsmen in their factory in Ohio. So, from the beginning, you are getting a quality product that should last a long while.

I found the soft configuration of the EOS to be a great feel for my preferences. It’s great for side sleepers. Stomach and back sleepers will want to go for the medium and firm configurations.

Updated Avocado Mattress Review 2023

The Avocado Mattress is a welcome addition to the natural mattress marketplace. It looks and feels great but also is affordable and eco-friendly, it is also available in a vegan option. With 100% GOLS organic certified latex, 100% GOTS organic certified wool & cotton and up to 1,414 support coils, it’s a great buy. It’s nice to see a natural mattress enter the online mattress space at such a competitive price. Since the first Avocado Green Mattress debuted back in 2017 there have been new Avocado mattress models such as:

  • Avocado Green Mattress
  • Avocado Pillow Top Mattress
  • Avocado Eco Organic Mattress
  • Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress
  • Eco Organic Kids Mattress
  • Eco Organoc Crib Mattress
  • Organic Crib Mattress
  • Luxury Organic Crib Mattress
  • Avocado Vegan Mattress
  • Avocado Latex Mattress

Overview of the Avocado Mattress

This mattress received excellent ratings by Consumer Reports for the last 2 years. This is a very sought-after achievement.  The quality is definitely there.  You can choose to buy this mattress with or without the pillow top.

The video below is of the Avocado Green Mattress without the pillow top.

Here’s a quick video that explains the main features of the pillow top version of the Avocado mattress.

Construction of the Avocado Bed

Below are the construction details as listed on the Avocado Mattress website. The Avocado Mattress is basically a hybrid mattress in that it is primarily spring and latex. The most popular hybrid mattress construction is spring and foam.

Top Layer

The top layer consists of hand-tufted GOTS certified organic wool rosettes on top of an organic cotton cover. This tufting process makes the bed look amazing but also is used because you don’t need to use a glue to hold the pieces of the mattress together.

This also makes the Avocado mattress ideal for hot sleepers as the wool helps regulate temperature.

Middle layers

The pillow top consists of a 2-inch latex layer followed by another 2 inches of latex below that for a total of 4 inches of dunlop latex.

Base Layer

The base of the mattress features one of the most advanced, internal, pressure-point support units available made by Leggett & Platt — a Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone®. The individually wrapped innersprings are arranged in 5 strategic zones, to support hips, back, and shoulders, plus a reinforced steel perimeter giving the bed a consistent level of support all the way to the edge so that you get proper support where you need it. And another 1-inch seamless layer of organic latex.

Avocado Green Mattress Certifications

Avocado is one of the greenest mattresses in the marketplace, hence the name, Avocado Green Mattress. Below are their certifications as listed on their website.

MADE SAFE® screens products for known harmful chemicals, bioaccumulation, persistence, and general and aquatic toxicity, including behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs. Our Avocado Green Mattress, organic mattress pad protectors, toppers and green pillows are certified under our brand name.

Formaldehyde Free by UL Environment

Formaldehyde, which is used to make one of the adhesives that hold mattresses together, is a VOC (a.k.a. off-gassing chemical that can linger for months) that has been linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers. The EPA considers it a probable human carcinogen. It does not belong in any mattress. For assurance, the entirety of our Avocado Green Mattress has been lab tested in environmental chambers and certified by UL Environment to be free from Formaldehyde.

Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It means they’re scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates.

eco-INSTITUT®

Our 100% GOLS organic certified natural latex is sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable latex sources in India. (FYI: Latex trees do not grow in the United States). Our latex is grown using only organic fertilizers. The finished latex is tested and certified for hazardous emissions by the eco-INSTITUT® — an international product testing and quality assurance company — by our provider, LIEN A. The eco-INSTITUT evaluates the latex for an extensive list of chemicals including: formaldehyde, VOCS (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals.

OEKO-TEX

Our organic certified latex, wool and cotton have received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications (19.0.79546, 19.HIN.68466 & 15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). These are strict standards for human and ecological safety. It means they’ve been tested in a lab to be free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers, and are not harmful to the skin.

The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for textile products at all processing levels. Our wool provider, JOMA Wool of New Zealand, adheres to the strict OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification to ensure human and ecological safety. This certifies that our wool is free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin.

Free from harmful chemicals, organic cotton is better for your health and the people growing it. Organic cotton is also a more sustainable and ethical option, instead of conventional cotton. We’re proud that our cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cotton used in our ticking is sourced from our partner in South India, Bannari Amman Spinning Mills (fun fact: their facility is powered by windmills), then finished at our textile manufacturing processing center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

USDA ORGANIC – NATIONAL ORGANIC PROGRAM

Our natural materials — organic latex, wool and cotton — are GOTS and GOLS certified in our brand name. The factory we own in Los Angeles is also certified. And our finished products are certified. (Anything less makes no sense.) That’s why our license number is always listed under our GOTS and GOLS logos, as required. Of course, these stringent standards are fully endorsed by the USDA’s National Organic Program.

VEGAN

VEGAN CERTIFIED

Our Vegan Mattress and bedding products have been certified and verified by Vegan Action (The Vegan Awareness Foundation) in Richmond, Virginia, under our brand name. These products do not use wool and do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have been tested on animals. Instead of wool, a generous layer of 100% GOTS organic certified cotton batting is used.

PETA APPROVED

Our Vegan Mattress is also PETA-approved VEGAN products under our brand name — certified to be animal-free products (i.e., wool) that align with vegan values.

Avocado Bed With or Without Pillowtop?

If you’re trying to decide between the Avocado with or without the pillow top. Here’s a detailed explanation from Avocado about the differences between the two:

On our standard Avocado mattress, we use two seamless layers of Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft); and a denser 1-inch layer (D95, firm) as a core base component under the innerspring support coil unit.

On the Avocado Mattress with the optional Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex — 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), and a denser 1-inch layer (D95 / 36-38 ILD, firm) as a core base component. No blended or synthetic latex is used, and there are no seams to break down over time and no chemical adhesives are used between the comfort layers.

I prefer the Avocado Pillowtop over the regular Avocado. Heavy sleeprs have the luxury of choosing either option because the latex will support extra weight.  The same goes for stomach sleepers but I think stomach sleepers should go with the non-pillowtop option.

Combination sleepers are best suited for the Pillow top version of the Avocado mattress but if you can afford it, go with the Avocado Luxury Mattress.

The Avocado Vegan Mattress Option

If you want to go with the Vegan option of the mattress they just switch the wool for cotton. The Avocado Green Mattress consists of the following materials.

Our vegan mattress features 100% natural latex rubber, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils. No polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants. It’s exactly the same as our Avocado Green Mattress but uses cotton instead of wool.

There really isn’t much difference between feel between the Avocaodo wool vs Avocado Vegan mattress construction.

How Much Does the Avocado Mattress Cost?

The price of the Avocado Green Mattress depends on whether or not you go with or without the pillow top option. The price will be the same whether or not you choose the regular or vegan option. Prices constantly change so it’s best to check directly on their website.

Avocado mattresses are not cheap so they recently came out with the Avocado Eco option. Below is the cost of the Avocado Green Mattress by model in a queen size. The price range has widened recently with the availability of the eco options.

  • Avocado Green Mattress: $1,899 (Queen)
  • Avocado Pillow Top Mattress: $2,399 (Queen)
  • Avocado Eco Organic Mattress: $1,199 (Queen)
  • Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress: $3,899 (Queen)
  • Eco Organic Kids Mattress: $649 (Twin)
  • Eco Organic Crib Mattress: $439
  • Organic Crib Mattress$349
  • Luxury Organic Crib Mattress: $1,379
  • Avocado Vegan Mattress: $1,899
Avocado Vegan Pillowtop Mattress: $2,399 (Queen)
  • Avocado Latex Mattress:  $2999 (Queen)

Why Is the Avocado so Expensive?

The Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other mattresses on the market due to several factors related to the materials used, the manufacturing process, and the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Here are some reasons why the Avocado mattress may have a higher price point:

  1. High-quality materials: Avocado mattresses are made from eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool. These materials tend to be more expensive than synthetic alternatives, like memory foam or polyester.

  2. Certified materials: The company sources its materials from certified suppliers, ensuring that they meet strict environmental and social standards. For example, their latex is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified, and their cotton is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. These certifications can add to the overall cost of the mattress.

  3. Manufacturing process: Avocado mattresses are handcrafted in the United States, which can contribute to higher labor and production costs compared to mattresses manufactured overseas.

  4. Durability and longevity: The natural materials used in Avocado mattresses tend to be more durable and longer-lasting than many synthetic alternatives, which can justify a higher initial investment.

  5. Commitment to sustainability: Avocado is committed to environmentally friendly practices, such as using recycled steel in their innerspring coils and reducing waste during manufacturing. These practices may increase production costs but contribute to a more sustainable product.

  6. Social responsibility: The company is dedicated to giving back through various initiatives, such as donating mattresses to those in need and supporting environmental causes. This commitment to social responsibility can influence the price of their products.

While the Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other options, many customers believe that the quality, durability, and eco-friendly materials used in its construction justify the higher price.

My Avocado Mattress Findings

The Avocado has a medium-firm feel. However because it is tufted, you get more of a true pillow top feel. With many latex mattresses, you get a flat feel with more or less sink depending on what type of latex is used. The tufting makes a significant difference here.

avocado mattress tufting

Here’s a video illustrating bounce on the Avocado mattress. It has quite a bit of bounce:

Another plus for this mattress is the edge support. Usually, all latex mattresses sink a little at the edge but because this mattress has a coil system as well, you get the benefit of added edge support so that you can use all of the mattresses and sleep right up to the edge without feeling like you will fall off.

avocado mattress edge support

Aside from the hand tufting, this mattress also has stitched handles that make it easy to rotate or transport.

avocado handles

Since the Avocado is made with latex and quality springs. According to Avocado, the weight limit is  350 lbs. per person, or 700 lbs. in total making it a good choice for heavy people.

Another common question is whether or not the Avocado Bed is Vegan. And, yes, you can get a vegan option for this mattress. The vegan option replaces the wool layer with cotton.

Avocado For Back and Stomach Sleepers

The Avocado without the pillowtop is best for back and side sleepers. Back and side sleepers should also take a look at the all latex Avocado mattress as that has a firmer feel and less give.

The Avocado Green Mattress Warranty

You can find detailed information on the Avocado Mattress on their website here. Avocado offers a 25-year warranty. Here are some of the high-level details of the warranty.

YEARS 1-10: FULL COVERAGE — NON-PRORATED

During the first ten (10) years of the Limited Warranty, Avocado Mattress will not charge purchaser to repair or replace purchaser’s mattress if it qualifies under the Limited Warranty. This period is non-prorated which means that we don’t charge you a percentage of the repair costs or replacement product based on the amount of time you slept on the mattress prior to noticing a defect.

YEARS 11-25: LIMITED COVERAGE — PRORATED

During years 11-25 of this 25-Year Limited Warranty Avocado Mattress will, at its option, replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the purchaser plus transportation and/or shipping charges. The prorated replacement charged will be dependent on the year that the mattress is replaced.

The Avocado Pillow

Avocado sells natural pillows made out of latex and kapok. These pillows have the same organic cotton cover as the mattress and can be adjusted to the perfect fit. Here’s a quick video overview of the Avocado Pillow.

My Avocado Mattress Recommendation

If you’re in the market for an all-natural mattress, the Avocado should be near to the top of your list. They have done a phenomenal job of blending traditional coils and tufting techniques along with natural latex, organic wool and organic cotton. Aside from the natural benefits this provides, it feels like a high-quality mattress. Latex is a very durable material and so you won’t have issues with depressions over time.

An emerging trend with natural mattresses is a free trial period. Avocado now has a 1-year night free trial period where if you don’t like it for whatever reason you can return it for a full refund. This really takes a trial to the next level and lets you try out an Avocado in all 4 seasons to know if it is truly right for you.  There are still many natural mattresses that don’t offer a free trial period and so it can be a gamble when buying online without trying first. Avocado takes away the anxiety of purchasing natural mattresses online.

Many people ask, does the Avocado Mattress work on an adjustable base? Yes, it does! Contrary to other reports, this mattress will work with an adjustable base.

In my Avocado Green Mattress review, I have used it for months on an adjustable base just fine.

Final Thoughts on the Avocado Green Mattress

The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best organic mattresses I have reviewed. It should outlast an all foam mattress because it is a durable mattress with durable materials. Average weight side sleepers will want to go with the Pillow top option or the Luxury Option. But don’t take my word for it, there are plenty of other mattress reviews that concur with my findings and were also please with how the Avocado mattress performed.

Does the Avocado Mattress Sag?

no mattress is immune to wear and tear over time. Factors such as usage, body weight, and maintenance can contribute to sagging in any mattress. To minimize sagging in an Avocado mattress or any other mattress, it’s important to:

  1. Rotate the mattress regularly: This can help distribute wear and tear more evenly across the surface, preventing the formation of body impressions.
  2. Use a supportive foundation: A proper foundation can provide the necessary support to prevent sagging. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best foundation to use with your mattress.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight: Carrying excess body weight can put additional strain on a mattress, potentially causing it to sag prematurely.
  4. Replace the mattress when necessary: Over time, even the best mattresses will wear out and may need to be replaced. Most mattresses last for around 7-10 years, but this can vary based on factors such as usage and material quality.

Why Do Avocado Mattresses Smell?

Although Avocado mattresses use eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, some odor may still be present when the mattress is new. However, the smell is generally less intense and less persistent than in synthetic foam mattresses, as the materials used in Avocado mattresses are considered to be low-VOC and more environmentally friendly.

To minimize any smell from a new Avocado mattress, you can:

  1. Allow the mattress to air out: Remove all packaging materials and let the mattress breathe in a well-ventilated room for a few hours or even a couple of days before using it. This will allow VOCs to disperse and the odor to dissipate.
  2. Use a mattress protector: A high-quality, breathable mattress protector can help minimize any lingering odors and protect your mattress from stains and allergens.
  3. Regularly clean and air your bedding: Washing your sheets and airing out your bedding regularly can help keep your sleeping environment fresh and minimize any odors.

The initial smell from a new Avocado mattress should dissipate within a few days to a couple of weeks. If the odor persists or seems unusually strong, you may want to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Avocado vs. Birch Mattress

Both the Avocado Green Mattress and the Birch Mattress are eco-friendly, high-quality options. Here’s a comparison to help you make an informed decision:

Avocado Green Mattress:

  1. List price (Queen size): $1,499
  2. Trial period: 365 nights
  3. Warranty: 25-year limited warranty
  4. Sleeping position:
    • Side sleepers: Good for most, with zoned support for pressure relief
    • Back sleepers: Offers excellent support for spinal alignment
    • Stomach sleepers: Provides sufficient firmness for proper support
  5. Weight: Suitable for all weight categories, but may be too firm for lightweight sleepers
  6. Age: Suitable for all ages, with a durable design that accommodates different life stages

Birch Mattress:

  1. List price (Queen size): $1,499
  2. Trial period: 100 nights
  3. Warranty: 25-year limited warranty
  4. Sleeping position:
    • Side sleepers: Good for most, but lightweight sleepers may find it too firm
    • Back sleepers: Offers excellent support for spinal alignment
    • Stomach sleepers: Provides enough firmness for proper support
  5. Weight: Suitable for all weight categories, but may be too firm for lightweight sleepers
  6. Age: Suitable for all ages, with a durable design that accommodates different life stages

Both mattresses are great for various sleeping positions, weights, and ages. However, the Avocado Green Mattress offers a longer trial period, which may be more appealing for those who want to test the mattress extensively before committing to a purchase. In terms of firmness, both mattresses may be too firm for some lightweight sleepers, so it’s essential to consider your personal preferences when choosing between the two.

Avocado vs. Awara: Which is More Organic?

Avocado Green Mattress and Awara Sleep Mattress are both eco-friendly options that use natural materials. To help you decide which one is better in terms of quality and certifications, let’s compare them:

Avocado Green Mattress:

  1. Quality: Made with GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, and GOTS-certified organic cotton. The mattress features a zoned support system, which is beneficial for spinal alignment and pressure relief.
  2. Certifications:
    • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)
    • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
    • GREENGUARD Gold certified
    • Made Safe certified
    • Formaldehyde-Free certified
    • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified

Awara Sleep Mattress:

  1. Quality: Made with natural Dunlop latex and organic wool and cotton. This mattress offers a good balance of comfort and support due to its hybrid design, combining latex with pocketed coils.
  2. Certifications:
    • Rainforest Alliance certified (for the Dunlop latex)
    • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for wool and cotton
    • CertiPUR-US certified (for the polyurethane foams used in the mattress)

Based on this comparison, the Avocado Green Mattress has more certifications and is made with GOLS-certified organic latex, which is considered a higher standard than the Rainforest Alliance certification for the Dunlop latex used in the Awara Sleep Mattress. Both mattresses use high-quality materials and offer great support, but the Avocado Green Mattress comes out on top in terms of certifications and overall quality.

Nest Bedding Owl Natural Hybrid Latex Review

Recently updated on March 9th, 2023 at 07:08 am

Nest Bedding continues to innovate and bring value to the mattress market. Their latest mattress, the Nest Owl Hybrid Latex, is a step forward for people that are looking for a mattress that incorporates natural materials but feels like a quality traditional mattress that will hold up very well over time.

Ordering the Nest Owl Hybrid Latex

With improvements in roll packing technology, mattresses with pocket coil systems can be compressed into UPS or FedEx shippable boxes that can be delivered to your doorstep. This mattress is no exception. After placing your order it should arrive in about a week. You can choose from two different firmness options, medium or firm. I think the vast majority of people will be happy with the medium which is what I recommend ordering unless you know you prefer a firm mattress.

Nest Owl Hybrid Latex Review

Unboxing the Nest Hybrid Latex

This mattress is heavy so you may need some help getting it out of the box onto your bed. Once you do, it’s easy to remove the plastic and as you can see in the video below, the bed inflates almost instantly and is ready to sleep on right away. This is the advantage to a coil/latex system. Foam takes a little longer to fully expand and there is also the element of off gassing with foam. With latex, there is virtually no off gassing because latex is a natural material. Latex recovers instantly as well.

Construction of the Alexander Hybrid Latex

Below are the specifications of this mattress according to Nest Bedding:Natural hybrid latex layers

  • 1.5″ – Organic Stretch Knit Cotton and Joma Wool with Eco-Flex Quilting Foam Cover
  • 3″ – OEKO-TEX® Certified Natural Dunlop Latex
  • 1″ – Certi-PUR Transitional Comfort Foam
  • 6″ – Reinforced Edge Coil Support Pocketed Coils
  • 1″ – 1.5 lb. Support Foam

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress showing the top layer of latex. Notice that the latex has holes which is standard. This allows for even more breathability. Since the layer beneath that is coils, there is even more ventilation through the bottom of the mattress. The top layer is easy to unzip and has a quality copper zipper.

My Nest Alexander Hybrid Latex Findings

This mattress feels more like an innerspring mattress than a latex mattress. By that I mean the springs will give you more of a floating sensation. With an all latex mattress it feels like there is some push back with the latex. The coils mitigate this by providing some extra give to allow the mattress to contour to your body better.

Here’s a picture to show you how much the mattress sinks. This is a 14 lb. bowling ball:

hybrid latex

This mattress will sleep cooler than a foam mattress because it is latex and foam. The wool inside the cover also helps regulate temperature so that you’re not too hot or too cold. Below is an infrared video showing heat retention.

This mattress has much more bounce than the foam hybrid mattresses because the coils and latex both contribute to bounce.

Here’s a video illustrating bounce and motion transfer. Obviously, you will be getting more motion transfer on this mattress. However, if you do go with a king size you may get a little less transfer than a queen because with the king you get two pieces of latex put side by side.

My Alexander Latex Hybrid Recommendation

The Nest Bedding Hybrid Latex mattress is another winner from Nest Bedding. This mattress should have wide appeal and is built to last. You can easily get 20 years from latex and the zoned pocket coil system should give you at least 8-10 years of quality support.

I received the Natural Escape mattress from the company My Green Mattress for free this past December. According to the website, this mattress uses all-natural materials hence the “green” in My Green Mattress. This is the first hybrid latex mattress I have reviewed and I have come to appreciate how the springs assist in giving proper cushioning and support in conjunction with the latex.

Overview of My Green Mattress

My Green Mattress is located in LaGrange, IL which is a suburb of Chicago. They have their own showroom and factory to make their own beds. The owner is a true craftsperson who is always striving for improvement. I had a chance to visit the store unannounced while on a trip to visit family. Below is a picture of me and the owner, Tim Masters. He is an all-around great guy who really cares about quality and making sure people sleep their best.

Ordering from My Green Mattress

You can purchase the Natural Escape mattress direct from the My Green Mattress website. Shipping is free and my mattress arrived in about a week. Similar to many of the online mattress startups, this mattress also comes roll packed in a box. This is the first natural mattress that came with a generous trial period. You get a 100-day trial where if you aren’t satisfied you can return the mattress for a full refund. This is a big plus since there are very few natural mattress brands that do this.

My Green Mattress Box

Unboxing Your My Green Mattress

Below is a video of me unboxing the mattress. Please note, I made an error in describing the latex. it is actually Dunlop, not Talalay latex.

Construction of the Natural Escape Mattress

These mattresses are made in a GOLS and GOTS certified factory. There’s only a handful of these factories in the United States. This means that they are certified to make mattresses containing organic latex and organic cotton.

This mattress has three layers to it.

The first layer is the quilted cover that is made of all-natural Joma wool and organic cotton.

Below that is a 3 inch 100% natural latex layer which is the comfort layer.

Below that is a 968 pocketed coil spring system with great edge support.

In total, this mattress measures 11 inches in height.

Some big positives to this mattress is that there are no flame retardant chemicals used. Instead, the all-natural wool cover acts as a natural flame retardant. This is typical on many natural latex mattresses. Instead of memory foam, you have natural latex so no artificial chemicals there either and consequently you won’t have to worry about any off-gassing. Our son said it smelled like Cheerios, whatever that means.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Findings

I have reviewed a few other latex mattresses, the Savvy Rest and the Spindle. However neither of these included springs. An all latex mattress will have some bounce to it since it’s basically rubber but not as much as a spring will give you. Here’s a video illustrating the amount of bounce you will get with the Natural Escape mattress:

The mattress itself will have some sink to it but unlike memory foam it will bounce back into shape immediately:

My Green Mattress Depth

Here’s how well the mattress dissipates heat. I used my FLIR camera to make an infrared video showing the heat my hand generated.

The My Green Mattress Recommendation

What I like about this mattress is that it just feels like a solid, quality innerspring mattress. You get great bounce with the pocket coils without as much motion transfer as a cheaper mattress. The Latex layer is also just right. This mattress will have a broad appeal to many different types of sleepers and the fact that it uses all-natural materials is a huge plus. In terms of firmness, this is more of a medium-firm. You aren’t going to sink into this mattress like soft memory foam. However, in my opinion, the springs work well with the latex to offer better support than an all latex mattress will. The 100-day free trial makes it that much more enticing to try.
