The Gel Foam Bed ( Gel Tech Venus Mattress is a 14 inch deep mattress that is super soft and very affordable. You can buy it direct from Amazon where it is currently listed at $749 for a queen. You can also order one direct from their website.  I received mine from the company for review. I found this mattress to be very soft. It would be an excellent choice for side sleepers. The foam has sort of an airy feel. Although it doesn’t recover quite as quickly as some foam mattresses, such as those with Avena foam, the benefits is that it has better cradling and pressure relief.

Unboxing and Overview

Below is a video of me unboxing the Gel Foam Venus mattress. As you can see it is a very thick mattress that feels very soft at first but after a few days it will firm up a bit more to get to its true feel.

Below is an illustration of how the mattress is constructed along with descriptions of each layer. This is a very thick mattress at 14 inches. Because it is so thick, it is a great choice for heavier people that want a more substantial mattress that won’t bottom out.

Support core

Below are the specifications of the mattress as listed on their website.

5.5” high-density Eco Flex support core

Comfort Layers
3.5” Serene Foam (Serene Foam is more supportive than any foam on the market and is a pressure sensitive foam)
2.0” Eco Flex layer made up of 1.0” soft foam and 1.0” medium foam
1.5” Medium Firm Eco Flex

1.50” Gel Infused Memory foam quilted into the cover (extra cooling and support)

10 year not prorated.

The Gel Foam Bed features “Serene foam” in the comfort layers. This means that the gel foam is quilted into the mattress which gives it the unique tufted feel. Serene foam is a type of foam that infuses microscopic air bubbles into the foam making it softer and quicker to recover.

In their words, “The unique collection of attributes make for a superior product. The cells are such that air is more readily trapped requiring more force to release the air. This additional force means more support for a consumer. The inverse of this phenomena also gives the material “memory” Less Temperature Sensitive Immediate response of comfort for consumers at virtually any temperature. Serene foam provides an improvement in motion dampening compared to conventional foam, but it provides more response than memory foam. Extremely Durable Offers exceptional durability, which rivals that of high-end viscoelastic foam, despite being up to 40% lower in product density Offers Exceptional Pressure Relief Provides a unique combination of support and pressure relief”

This mattress really cradles you. It’s perfect for people that want to have maximum coziness and really sink into their mattress. Below is a picture of my 14 lb. bowling ball sinking into the mattress. The top layer is very soft but there are multiple layers below that provide the necessary support. I would not recommend this for stomach sleepers though as it sinks a bit too much.

gel foam bed

Here’s a video me bouncing the same bowling ball on the Gel Foam Bed. Because this mattress is so thick and because it’s an all foam mattress, there’s very little motion transfer.

Below is a video shot with my infrared camera to show the heat retention on the top layer of the mattress. This mattress has a few things going for it in this regard. Because the top layer has ridges sewn into the top layer of foam, it creates a little bit of room for heat to escape when you lie on it. Also, the foam is not as dense as a traditional foam mattress so it breathes a bit better. Finally, the gel foam also sleeps cooler than traditional foam. However because it is a soft foam, it will cradle your body more which means more mattress covering your body which can lead to more heat retention.

If you’re looking for a thick, soft mattress with a plush feel that isolates motion transfer well, this mattress is a great choice. At $749 for a queen, it is a good value. This mattress comes with a 100 day free trial period where you can return it for a full refund, they will even arrange to pick up of the mattress. However, they do ask that you sleep on it for at least 60 nights so that your body can fully adjust to the mattress.

Update, the Gel Foam Bed Miranda was recently rated number 1 by Better Homes and Gardens magazine in their January 2017 issue.

Doze Mattress Review 2

Doze Mattress Review

The Doze Mattress is another offering in the growing lineup on online mattress companies. Doze uses a simple 2 layer construction with the latest foam and ticking technology to create a mattress that is affordable and comfortable for most sleepers. Coming in at $750 for a queen size, it is a good value and a good bet.

Ordering and Unboxing

You can order the Doze mattress direct from their website  and it will arrive in about 5 business days. Unboxing the Doze mattress is a simple process. Most all foam mattresses will feel really soft immediately after unboxing. This is normal and don’t take it as a sign that the mattress will feel that way permanently. An all foam compressed mattress will firm up to its true firmness after a couple days. After unboxing around 90 of these types of mattresses I have found that the longer a mattress has stayed compressed the longer it will take to get into shape. That said, all of them eventually get to their true firmness.

Specifications and Construction

The Doze bed is constructed as follows. It is a relatively simple design. Some 2 layer foam mattresses have poor transition between the layers where you can feel where one ends and the firm layer begins. That wasn’t the case with the Doze. It offers a smooth transition of layers so that the mattress functions as a cohesive unit.

3″ of premium gel memory foam designed to keep you cool & comfy
7″ of moderate density support foam enough support & bounce for every bedroom activity

doze side viewFindings

Below is a video illustrating bounce on the Doze mattress. It is all foam and really doesn’t have much bounce but the top foam layer still recovers quick enough so that there aren’t impressions that you need to dig out of if you change positions at night.

To see how the layers react, I removed the cover of the mattress to show you the inside. There are holes in the top gel layer of this mattress for extra breathability.

The Doze mattress comes with a zippable cover that can be washed in your washing machine just like a bed sheet. This is super handy especially if your mattress gets dirty during a move which inevitably happens. I still recommend a mattress protector if you have small children or drink in bed but still nice to know that the cover is always washable too.

Here’s a video illustrating heat retention. I used an infrared camera to show how quickly heat will dissipate after placing my hand on the mattress for about 10 seconds.

I found the Doze mattress to be in the softer end of the spectrum. It is firmer than the Green Tea mattress from Zinus but recover faster than the Green Tea mattress. It truly will be accommodating to all sleep positions but I think it will be best suited towards side and back sleepers.

I would take a look at the Tuft and Needle Mint mattress instead.

Brentwood Home Sierra Mattress Review 2

Brentwood Home Sierra Mattress Review

The Sierra mattress from Brentwood home is the one of the best values for your money. In short, you get all the quality and craftsmanship of a company that owns it own factory and all the value of a direct to consumer mattress backed by a very generous 120 night trial period and 25 year warranty.

Overview of the Sierra Mattress

Below is a video that gives you a quick overview of the mattress. This mattress is on the softer end of the spectrum for Brentwood and the foam and gel foam do a phenomenal job with pressure relief. Below is a video of me with the Sierra mattress.

Construction of the Sierra Mattress

  • Medium / Soft Feel
  • Gel memory foam to help with temperature regulation
  • New Zealand wool liner wicks away moisture and is naturally antimicrobial for a cooler, fresher mattress.
  • 4-way stretch knit with a wider, cushion-quilt design.
  • Handmade in Los Angeles and certified free of unhealthy chemicals, including harmful fire retardants, phthalates, and heavy metals.
  • 25-year warranty and 120-Night Guarantee

Technical Specs

  1. 4-way stretch knit
  2. New Zealand wool layer
  3. 3-inch gel memory foam layer
  4. 2-inch ventilated airflow layer

6-inch therapeutic support base

Below is a picture that shows what each layer looks like:

Sierra Mattress review layersMattress Dimensions

These are standard mattress dimensions so nothing new here but if you’re upgrading sizes, good for measurement and space planning.

  • Twin: 39″ x 75″ x 10″
  • Twin XL: 39″ x 80″ x 10″
  • Full: 54″ x 75″ x 10″
  • Queen: 60″ x 80″ x 10″
  • King: 76″ x 80″ x 10″
  • CA King: 72″ x 84″ x 10″

How the Sierra Mattress Feels

This mattress is very well built. The sides are constructed of furniture grade upholstery to give the mattress a sophisticated look. It also has sewn handles on each side to make rotating and carrying the mattress much easier.

Brentwood Home Sierra Mattress Bed review

This mattress is a little on the softer side which is great for pressure relief. You can see below that the top of the mattress has a tufted look to it which creates little valleys for air to flow through keeping you cool at night. The knit belgian fabric cover also helps reduce motion transfer by moving in all directions to keep the mattress from pulling in any particular direction when sleeping.

Here’s a picture of the type of cover that Brentwood uses. The sides are stitched to the top and bottom of the mattress. This is important because most foam mattresses have covers that are zippered. Having a stitched cover gives the mattress a much neater look and makes you bed look great.

brentwood cover

The Sierra mattress isolates motion very well as most memory foam mattresses do. However it can isolate motion and recover quickly which is a great feature for an all foam mattress.

This mattress has more hug than most of the online mattresses I have tested. That’s in part due to the unique cover and knitting that gives it a tufted feel and the fact that the top layers of foam are less dense creating a great sinking feeling that cradles you while you sleep. Unlike the ultra dense foam mattresses, this one will conform and recover quickly. People that wake up with sore shoulders or hips will appreciate how this mattress works.

My Sierra Mattress Recommendation

Brentwood home doesn’t cut any corners with the Sierra mattress. Even though it’s priced below $800 for a queen which is significantly less than most of the other competitors in the space. This is a great mattress for people that want the feeling on a high priced mattress without the high price tag. Most memory foam mattresses are very similar in how they are constructed. What differentiates them is where they are made. Foams poured in China for instance lack many of the controls in the United States which can lead to inconsistent feel across mattresses. Brentwood Home mattresses are made 100% in the USA.

Brentwood has been making mattresses for decades and it shows in the quality of their product. They are able to draw upon their experience to create mattresses that raise the bar in every price point and category. Their product line continues to expand with excellent pillows as well. I highly recommend people that purchase any new mattress to upgrade their pillow. I was fortunate enough to try out the Sierra with the Aliso Feathered Gel pillow which works perfectly with the Sierra.

If you are in the market for a sleep upgrade, you owe it to yourself to try a Brentwood Home mattress. The Sierra is a great way to get introduced to their products with no risk since you get a 120 night trial with free shipping and free returns.

HIBR Mattress Review

The HIBR mattress was designed for both comfort and temperature regulation. About a year ago I received the HIBR pillow for review and found that it does a very good job with keeping my head cool. HIBR sent me a free mattress to review as well and below are my findings.

Below is an overview of HIBR in the words of the founders:

“Our pillows raised the bar on what is possible with sleep technology. We wanted to push the limits even further with our mattress and develop something truly revolutionary. We watched tons of other startups launch generic, off-the-shelf mattresses – and we could of got sucked into that, but we knew that if we stayed true to who we were and what we wanted to accomplish that the end results would speak for themselves.” – HIBR Co-Founder, Nick Ondrako

“That’s why it didn’t matter to us how long it took to get it right. In the end it took us 14 months to complete all our research, gather data and let real consumers test the mattress. Our entire team of developers, engineers and manufacturing personnel worked tirelessly to create a mattress that has set a new standard for what it feels like to get a great night’s sleep.” – HIBR Co-Founder, Erick Arbé

Ordering and Unboxing

HIBR provides you a nice opener and welcome letter as well as an overview of the mattress:

HIBR Thank You

You can order the HIBR mattress direct from their website. It should arrive in a week and come in a box just like the majority of mattress companies I have reviewed. HIBR mattress trial period is 100 nights. If you aren’t satisfied within that time you can return it for a full refund. Below is a video of me unboxing the HIBR mattress:

The HIBR mattress has 3 layers which is standard in a memory foam mattress.

HIBR Imside

  • A true 11” three layer composition
  • Graphite – Gel Visco Synthetic Top Layer
  • Temperature Response Visco Middle Layer
  • Adaptive Core Foundation Base Layer

Below is a video that illustrates heat retention using a thermal camera. You can see how quickly heat dissipates from the mattress.

The HIBR mattress isolates motion well and the foam will recover quickly. Here’s a bowling ball drop video showing it in action:

As you can see the mattress doesn’t sink in all that much:

I would recommend the HIBR to someone who is primarily looking for a cool sleeping memory foam mattress. This mattress provides good pressure relief as you sink in quickly to the top layer. If motion transfer is an issue this mattress handles that well.

The Nolah Mattress is a new type of high-resilience polyfoam mattress that attempts to address common problems with foam such as slow responsiveness and sleeping hot. They have created a proprietary foam called Nolah  Air Foam which is infused with according to their website is packed with billions of microscopic air pockets to improve breathability. I was sent a free Nolah mattress for review to test it out for myself.

Ordering and Unboxing the Nolah Mattress

You can purchase the Nolah Mattress online and your mattress should arrive to your doorstep in about a week. It comes with a 120 night trial period where if you aren’t satisfied you can contact them via the website and they will arrange pickup of the mattress. According to Nolah they will often donate returned mattresses to a charity.

When you purchase a Nolah mattress you also have an opportunity to adopt an animal for free. You can choose from a variety of animals via the website. I chose a polar bear. After a week or so you will receive an official certificate of adoption from the organization, Defenders of Wildlife:

defenders of wildlifeNolah Mattress Construction and Specifications

The exact specifications of the Nolah mattress are not listed on its website. However, it is basically a three-layer foam mattress. Here’s a picture below that shows each layer.

Inside Nolah Mattress

The top layer is the Nolah Air Foam. Underneath that is the Avena foam layer which is the same type of foam used in the Leesa mattress. The difference with the Leesa is that it has a convoluted layer of Avena foam as the top layer for breathability.  Avena foam acts similar to latex in that it has almost instant recovery and is also very breathable. This makes the Nolah mattress both good at contouring, breathable and a little bouncy. When comparing Avena vs Latex, I still think that Latex has more bounce and I think both are breathable.

My Nolah Mattress Findings

This is a unique feeling mattress. When first laying on the mattress you feel quick pressure relief. I found the Nolah Air Foam conforms much faster than traditional memory foam. Conversely, it also recovers much faster than memory foam.

Here’s a  video illustrating bounce and recovery on the mattress.

Here is it again in slow motion. Notice the bounce you get with this mattress without really sacrificing much motion isolation.

Here’s a look at how the layers react from the inside. Remember the first layer is the Nolah Air Foam and the second layer is the Avena foam. The third is a standard base layer.

Finally, I created a video to show how much this mattress retains heat using my infrared camera.

My Nolah Mattress Recommendation

The Nolah Mattress is truly an evolution in foam mattresses. The layer of Nolah Air Foam does its job in keeping you cool at night and the second layer of Avena foam gives you great bounce without the use of latex. It’s a great mattress for people that just don’t like the sinking feel that dense memory foam gives you. It’s easy to change positions at night. The trade off is that you won’t get as much “hug” with this mattress. My only complaint with the Nolah mattress is that I wish it had a more substantial base layer. I always worry that heavier people may bottom out while jumping into or just flopping down on the mattress quickly. I know this probably won’t be an everyday thing but just adding an extra inch to the base layer would solve this minor problem.

Overall I think this is a solid mattress that will appeal to people that want the benefits of foam without all the traditional pitfalls. Having a foam mattress with quick recovery doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better but if it is something you are looking for, look no further than the Nolah.

Sonno Bed Review : A Tale of Two Mattresses 9

Sonno Bed Review : A Tale of Two Mattresses

Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.

Sonno is a brand that has been around for a while. However, they just launched a new website, where you can purchase their latest offering, the Sonno Bed. It is a flippable mattress where each side will give you a different level of firmness depending on your preference. For this review I received the medium/firm option.

You can order this mattress direct from It arrives in about a week like other mattress in a box companies. In addition to the mattress you can also purchase a foundation that has matching fabric. This foundation comes with legs that lift the foundation off the ground. You can choose a 6 or 9 inch height.  The foundation also comes in a box and is easy to assemble. The Sonno Bed comes with a 100 day trial period where you can return it for a refund if not completely satisfied.

Here’s me unboxing the mattress on the frame that I just assembled.

The Box spring was easy to assemble. I highly recommend a socket wrench for the job. All I could find was my crescent wrench which did the trick but took a lot longer.  This is a very solid box spring and will really make your bedroom look nice once everything is put together.

sonno box

Here’s all the contents of the box spring. The screws, bolts and fabric are all included.

sonno open box

There are 4 upholstered sides that bolt together. After that you screw in the slats on the top.

Sonno inside

The Sonno bed is made of 5 layers which is significantly more than the typical 3 layer mattress that I review. For this mattress to be flippable, there needs to be more than a foam base layer on one end hence the multiple layers. Here’s an illustration of the layers from the website:

Sonno construction

Below is a photo I took of the inside of the mattress so you can see what it looks like in real life.

Sonno Layers

Both sides of this mattress have a latex top layer followed by memory foam and finally an inner support core.

Again, I reviewed the firm/medium mattress. You can also purchase a medium / soft. However I thought he medium firmness was plenty soft and probably wouldn’t go much softer than that unless you want a really soft mattress.

I really like the handles which make flipping so much easier.

Sonno handle

Because each side has a latex top layer, it does well with temperature regulation. Here’s an infrared video demonstrating how quickly the heat dissipates from the mattress.

Even though this mattress has a top latex layer, the latex is not as dense as a GhostBed which lessens the bounce. Here’s a video to illustrate that point.

The Sonno Bed is softer than the GhostBed. I would place the medium firmness as being firmer than the Noomi but softer than the GhostBed. I did notice that when I sat down quickly on the mattress I would sort of bottom out. That really isn’t an issue unless you weigh over 200 lbs. and plan to jump around on it.

You can tell that Sonno put in  a lot of attention to detail. Being able to choose different levels of firmness means that you’re more likely to get it right the first time. It also is a great option for a guest bed where you will have guests with different firmness preferences.

This mattress and frame gives you the complete package for a nice looking bed. If you are looking for a really firm mattress, you may want to look elsewhere. However, I think the firm / medium option will appeal to most sleepers.

Update October 12, 2017

The Dream Bed has now been replaced by Mattress Firm’s new brand, Tulo. Read more about Tulo Here.

tulo mattress firm

The Dream Bed is the latest online mattress offering from Mattress Firm. not only does this bed provide amazing pressure relief but because its offered through Mattress Firm, they can have it delivered to your door in a box in 48 hours! I was given a “Cool Dream Bed” for review and I found it to be a cool mattress indeed.

With all the new online mattress startups coming on the scene over the past year, it’s only fitting that some of the veteran players in the industry come out with their own offering. Mattress Firm which is the most dominant mattress retailer in the United States has taken advantage of their vast network of stores to introduce the Dream Bed. What makes this particularly unique is that the top layer of the Cool Dream Bed has a layer of cooling gel, something I have not tested in a mattress before.

Unboxing the Dream Bed was fun. It even comes with a selfie stick where you can just to post a selfie with the included thought bubble to the hashtag #dreamitforward. A great way to spread the word about how a mattress is donated for every mattress purchased.

Dream Bed Unbox

Here’s a video of me opening the mattress:

The specifications of the Dream Bed Cool are as follows:

The top cover is a woven fabric for breathability

Under that is a thin .125″ layer of cooling gel.

Followed by 3″ of memory foam

And finally, 7.5″ of support foam.

Underneath the cover of the Dream Bed is a studded bottom that helps to keep the mattress in place on the bed. It’s a very nice feature if you put it on an adjustable base which you can do.

dream bed bottom

Here’s a video that shows how each layer reacts:

This mattress is on the softer side compared to others I have tested. I really like how it cradles your body AND keeps you cool. It’s hard to do with memory foam but the gel layer really does the job.

Here’s a video that illustrates heat retention on the Dream Bed Cool:

You’ll notice that this mattress has a fair amount of sink. So the mattress will give you some hug.

Dream Bed Sinkage

The woven cover is nice in that it doesn’t trap heat which allows the cooling layer to do its work. Since this is an all foam mattress it won’t have any bounce to it.

Here’s a video that illustrates motion transfer:

Here’s a slow motion video:

The Cool Dream Bed is a wonderful mattress. People looking for a mattress that has great pressure relief will find it here. You will sink into this mattress a little bit but you also won’t overheat due to the top gel layer. There are a lot of foam mattresses in the market that have cooling gel in the top layer of foam but by having a dedicated all gel layer at the top, it  dramatically improves cooling.

This mattress should have very wide appeal and is a great choice for people looking for a quality foam mattress that can be delivered conveniently and quickly. According the Mattress Firm site, they can usually deliver in under 48 hours. It has a very generous trial period of 180 days with hassle free returns or exchanges so you have plenty of time to see if it’s right for you.

OSO Mattress Review 2

I received a free OSO Mattress to review. The OSO Mattress is a new latex/foam mattress that offers two different levels of firmness. There’s a soft and firm end to this mattress. Just rotate it 180 degrees to adjust, no flipping required. This mattress uses some of the “dream cell technology found in the Reverie mattress.

Unboxing and Overview

The OSO mattress comes in a box and will get delivered to your door in about a week. It comes with a 101 night trial where you can return it if not satisfied for a full refund plus the cost of shipping.

In the video above you’ll notice that the mattress looks really flat. It took about 10 hours for the mattress to fully expand. I tried to take a nap on it right after opening and was worried that it wasn’t thick enough. Just make sure to give it a little time. Once it’s fully expanded it feels great.

What makes this mattress unique is that there are two sides, a soft and firm. They even have tags to help you out.

oso soft

According to their website the mattress is constructed as follows:

Fabric, made in South Carolins
Top comfort layer, 1.5″ of talalay latex with a 14-16 ILD range and 3 lb density. Made in the USA.
RevTech foam layer, 1.5” of 2 lb pcf foam, made in the USA.
Base layer is 6” of 2 lb pcf RevTech foam made in the USA.
DreamCell foam springs have 4 and 5 lb natural latex.

Here’s a picture of the inside of the mattress, the DreamCell springs are further inside the wall of the mattress.

OSO layers

If you’re wondering what a DreamCell looks like, below is a picture of one from the Reverie mattress which uses the same technology except that with the Reverie you can adjust the soft medium and firm DreamCells around to create a firmer or softer mattress.

Reverie Mattress

I tried sleeping on both levels of firmness but I settled on the soft side towards the top of the bed. I really like how I could sink into the mattress.

Here’s a picture to illustrate how much the soft side of the mattress gives. There wasn’t a dramatic shift in firmness between the soft and firm end either which gave the mattress a consistent feel.

oso sinkage

Below is a video illustrating how much bounce the OSO mattress has. I tested this on the soft end of the mattress.

Here’s another take but in slow motion

Here are the accelerometer readings when dropping the bowling ball on the mattress

oso accelerometer

Here’s how the layers of the OSO mattress react. Since the walls of the mattress were glued together, I couldn’t get inside the mattress to show the dream foam but this will give you a sense of how each layer functions.

The OSO is a versatile mattress due to the fact that you can quickly change firmness levels without having to flip the bed and change sheets. The mattress on the whole is slightly on the softer end of the spectrum. I really appreciate the top layer of talalay latex. Normally mattresses at this price point will use a dunlop latex or foam/latex blend at the top layer. I did notice that if I jumped into bed, I would bottom out a little. Granted, I’m well over 200 lbs. but something to consider for heaver people. This mattress sleeps cool and will spring back to form which makes it easier to switch positions at night. I recommend this mattress to people that don’t want to feel stuck in their mattress and prefer a little bit of bounce. Because you get two different firmness options, chances are even greater that it will be a good fit.

Ameena Mattress Review 2

Ameena Mattress Review

The Sleep Sherpa team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. Sleep Sherpa has affiliate partnerships so we may get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

The Ameena Mattress is being touted as the most researched mattress ever. According to their website, they analysed over 250,000 traditional mattress purchases to figure out what people like and don’t like in a mattress and used that information to create the Ameena. I put the Ameena to the test in the review below.

Ameena joins a long line of other mattress startups with the ability to order your mattress online, have it shipped in a box and arrive to your doorstep in about a week. The Ameena has a 120 night risk free trial which is also becoming a standard. Similar to Leesa, Ameena will donate a mattress for every mattress purchased. You can even recommend a charity to Ameena to donate mattresses to.

Here’s me unboxing a queen size Ameena mattress in the video below:

The mattress came to full form in about an hour. The first thing I noticed is that the top layer is very responsive. By that I mean it bounces back into shape very quickly. If you are familiar with traditional memory foam mattress mattress, you will find that it recovers slowly which is a sensation some people don’t like.

The Ameena mattress is constructed as follows:

Top Layer: 2 inches of  “Energex Foam” I don’t know exactly what that means but I can tell you that it truly does bounce back into shape quickly similar to latex.

Middle Layer: 2 inches of gel memory foam. This is the squishy layer that will conform more and help with pressure relief. I found it interesting that this layer was put in the middle as opposed to the top. A typical memory foam mattress goes from firmest at the bottom to softest at the top. By reversing the two top layers, you won’t get  the slow response from the top layer but still get some of the benefits of the squishy layer.

Base Layer: 6 inches of base foam. This is fairly standard for a foam mattress. I did find that this base layer was a little softer than most of the other base layers I have tested.

The Ameena mattress does a great job with motion isolation. This exceeded my expectations as I thought the top layer would be more bouncy but the middle layer seemed to absorb most of that motion. Here’s a video below to illustrate the point.

This held true when I tested the motion transfer on my accelerometer. Here are the results below:

ameena motion transfer

Here’s a look at the inside of the Ameena that shows how each layer reacts. Notice that the middle layer is the squishy layer.

The Ameena also does better than most all foam mattresses when it comes to heat retention. I think this is in part because the top layer is very responsive and the foam is not as dense as the middle layer which allows heat to pass through more easily. Below is a video with my thermal camera to illustrate the point:

I recommend the Ameena mattress to people that don’t want to get that stuck in the mud feeling but also conforming. Although this mattress aims to be the best based on studying hundreds of thousands of other purchases, I have found it’s impossible to please everyone. You aren’t going to sink into this mattress and it’s not going to hug you like some of the others I have tested. However if you like a mattress that you can change positions on easily and one that will sleep cooler than most, the Ameena would be a great choice.

The FIN Mattress was recently featured on the Today Show as part of their Steals and Deals segment. Since then the mattress has grown in popularity. I was given a free FIN mattress for review.  This mattress is on the softer end of the spectrum. You will sleep more “in” this mattress than “on” it.

You can order the FIN Mattress direct from their website. As with most of the mattresses I reviewed this one will come in about 5 business days, in a box. I received a queen size which weighs about 70 lbs. so was fairly easy to transport around my house.

Here’s me unboxing the mattress. As you can see it is folded into 4ths.

The FINmattress is on the softer end of the spectrum. It will contour to your body right away so no waiting around for the foam to react.

The mattress is comprised of 3 layers as seen below:

fin layers

I measured the mattress myself and it did come to 11 inches:

fin mattress depth

This mattress does not have an unzippable cover so I needed to cut away the cover to get a picture of the inside. Here’s what the inside looks like:

fin mattress layers

To give you a sense of how the layers react, check out the video below. You’l notice that the top layer of latex is very soft, almost like a memory foam so this will conform very well.

Notice that the bowling ball sinks in a good amount. The device in the background that looks like a clock is the Awair air monitor. I have been using this device for a few weeks and it actually prompted me to buy a new air purifier due to some of the shocking readings.

fin mattress sinkage

As far as heat retention is concerned, the top latex layer does a good job of dissipating heat. Generally, mattresses with a top latex layer with the “swiss cheese holes” such as this tend to perform well.

Here’s how the mattress dissipates heat over time as recorded from my Flir camera

While unboxing this mattress i really didn’t notice much off gassing but that doesn’t mean its not occurring. This is the Awair score of the FIN mattress about 45 minutes after unboxing. I am noting the VOC reading is at 4 which is high. Although almost all mattresses in a box will off gas to some extend. The amount of off gassing often depends on how soon it was roll packed after manufacturing. If the mattress has had a day or two to sit out, the off gassing will be much less. Over time all these foam mattresses will stop off gassing and become inert.

Fin Awair Score

Although this is a softer mattress, it held up very well with motion transfer. This was a surprise to me because many of the soft mattresses I have reviewed will not do as well. I think it’s in part to the softer top latex layer. Here’s a video illustrating how it handles bounce and motion transfer.

Here’s what the data looks like from my accelerometer reading. There are firmer mattresses that will absorb motion better than this mattress but then the tradeoff is that you will get a firmer mattress.

The FIN mattress is a good mattress for people who want a softer mattress that will immediately conform to their body and relieve pressure. I weigh around 215 lbs. and it supported me just fine. Although, when I jumped on it, I noticed that it bottomed out on me. Therefore I would be cautious about buying this if you weigh over 220 lbs.

Novosbed Review: Tops for Quality and Comfort!

Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.

I was given a queen size, medium firm Novosbed for free to review. Soon after unboxing the Novosbed, I knew it was of a superior quality than some mattresses I have tried from online bedding companies. Novosbed is made with premium ultra-dense foams and because of that, you should easily get 15 plus years of good use out of it. Aside from the high-quality, this bed feels great and the Comfort+ option gives sleepers piece of mind knowing that they can adjust the firmness of the mattress after purchasing.  Novosbed is the first company to launch a product like this that has patented their approach. This mattress was designed with customization in mind; the folks at Novosbed understand that there is no one perfect mattress.

Summary: 9.1/10 –  Shop Novosbed

Ordering the Novosbed

You can order the Novosbed directly from their site and choose from 3 different levels of firmness. For this review I chose the medium firm. I was also sent the comfort plus kit which allowed me to make the bed softer. You can also order a kit that will make the bed firmer. You can get this kit for free if you find that the bed isn’t to your liking.

Placing the order is easy, your mattress ships in a box and will arrive in about a week. Novosbed eliminates all risk by offering a trial period of 120 days, which is substantially longer than other mattress companies. Since this mattress has very dense memory foams it may require more of a break in period than lower density rivals. I strongly recommend that anyone buying a Novosbed to give it at least 5 or 6 weeks of sleeping on it to get a true sense of how it feels.

Novosbed box

Novosbed ships throughout the United States and Canada. Right now there aren’t that many online mattress companies shipping to Canada so this is a great feature.

Unboxing the Novosbed Mattress

Unboxing the Novosbed was similar to the other compressed mattresses I have reviewed.

My Novosbed Findings

This mattress measures 11 inches deep. Adding the Comfort+ option will give you another 2 inches of depth if needed. This mattress is constructed using ultra-dense foam though the densities differ slightly depending on the level of firmness you choose. All three firmness options have the standard base layer a transitional foam layer and a top foam comfort layer. Unlike some of the other online luxury mattresses, the Novosbed is designed without a pillow top, and offers a washable cover. It also has a thick spandex sub-cover under this removable top-cover to provide additional structure and support.  This is a nice touch that adds a luxurious richness to the overall feel of the mattress.

Here’s what the inside looks like:

novosbed review inside layers

The top has holes which makes it a bit more breathable.

Compare this to the Tempurpedic Clouse Breeze below

Tempur cloud breeze review
An inside view of the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze

The Tempurpedic has two layers of convoluted foam to help with breathability. Below is the video of me squishing the Tempurpedic Cloud Breeze.  You’ll see that both Novosbed and Tempurpedic have dense quality foams but the Novosbed is much more affordable and includes the Comfort+ option

You’ll notice that this bed feels more like a traditional high-end memory foam mattress in that it will contour more to your body and will be a little slower to recover than a  Leesa mattress. Many others use a layer of latex that allows the mattress to bounce back into shape but the tradeoff is that these mattresses don’t provide as much contouring pressure relief as an all foam mattress. Novosbed uses a design that is much closer to a Tempur-Pedic than any other online mattress company I have reviewed.

Here’s how the layers react:

Additionally because Novosbed uses a denser foam, there is really no motion transfer. Check out the video below as an illustration.

Here’s how that translates on the accelerometer:

You will gradually sink into this mattress and find that it will address all your pressure points. You won’t get stuck in it though as you don’t sink too much. Below is the bowling ball on the comfort plus (soft) layer.

Here it is again on just the mattress (medium firmness)

This is what the Firm Comfort+ layer looks like

And here’s an illustration of motion transfer with the firm layer:

I found that adding the soft comfort plus layer gave the mattress more of a pillow top feel. It definitely made the bed softer. I was comfortable on the bed without the soft layer but my wife preferred it.

Below is a video of how to install the comfort adjustment layer

Below is a video using my infrared camera to detect heat. This will give you an idea of how well it does with heat retention. I will be publishing more videos like this in subsequent reviews to give readers more context.

My Novosbed Recommendation

The Novosbed is a very high-quality mattress that should hold up very well over time. I found that the medium Novosbed felt a little more like a medium-firm mattress. This is consistent with higher-density memory foams, and would likely soften slightly over time. If not, there is always the option of using the Comfort+ kit to adjust the firmness. This mattress will be hard to beat in terms of motion isolation.

I really like this mattress. It is unique in an increasingly crowded online space, and I appreciate how Novosbed has not sacrificed the quality of foam or fabrics to lower their price. It is a little more expensive than some other online mattress brands but when you compare the specs you’ll see why: pound-for-pound and stitch-for-stitch, the Novosbed is the most affordable luxury mattress on the market. You are getting what I consider to be close to Tempur-Pedic quality at a fraction of the price.

Shop Novosbed.

Whisper Bed Ultra Plush Mattress Review 2

Whisper Bed Ultra Plush Mattress Review

UPDATE: Looks like Whisper Bed is no more. Check out my other Mattress Reviews for something similar.
I received a free Whisper Bed to review. The Whisper Bed comes in two levels of firmness, “Firm” and “Plush”. I had the opportunity to test the plush version and it certainly lives up to its name.  The plush mattress allows you to sink in but because the top layer is a blend of latex and foam you won’t find yourself stuck in it either. Whisper stands out from the pack with their 200 day trial period. Right now the standard hovers around 100 days.

The Whisper Bed is only available through their website. This keeps costs down. They also have a chat feature where they are available to answer any questions you may have about the mattresses.  After placing your order the mattress should arrive in about 5 business days. As with most other mattresses I have reviewed this one also comes in a box.

This bed is constructed with 3 layers which is sort of the standard for memory foam mattresses. There is a firm foam base layer and above that is a medium firm foam layer with a top layer of soft latex. What makes this bed unique is that the top layer of latex is softer than what you will find on some of the other foam/latex mattresses.

whisper construction

The plush version of the Whisper Bed is definitely plush. It has quite a bit of give to it so you sink right in. You don’t slowly sink like a traditional foam mattress though. Instead it has more of a pillow top feel to it. It also recovers much faster than traditional memory foam so you won’t feel stuck.  Below is a quick video to illustrate the point.

The WhisperBed doesn’t have much bounce because it is an all foam bed. There’s really nothing remarkable about bounciness but it does do a good job of isolating motion.

As you can see this 16 lb. bowling ball will sink in a fair amount but not too much

whisper bed depthConclusion

I recommend the plush Whisper Bed to side sleepers. I often hear from readers looking for a mattress that will address hip pain. If you are currently on an innerspring mattress and notice pressure points, this would be a good mattress to transition to in order to find relief. You won’t feel the pressure of the base layer because the transition and top latex layer will give you adequate support. The base layer also has a little give to it so even the base layer will provide some level of pressure relief.  The top latex layer is soft enough that you won’t get the push back you typically feel with latex but still get the benefit of it coming back into shape quickly to avoid leaving impressions.

The Whisper Bed is a versatile bed and while I haven’t tested the firm version, I really enjoyed the plush version for its ability to keep me comfortable on my side which isn’t my favorite sleeping position. With a 200 day trial period you will definitely have time to see if it’s a good fit for you.

I received a free GhostBed to review. GhostBed wasn’t the first on the scene in the mattress in a box space but being first doesn’t always mean being the best. Often, the first one out of the gate becomes the benchmark to rise above, and that’s just what GhostBed has done.

Overview of the GhostBed

Here’s my updated findings from my original review a few years back and my thoughts on the mattress now.

Ordering the Ghostbed Mattress

Ordering the GhostBed is just as simple and straightforward as the other mattresses in a box that I have ordered. What makes them unique is that you can also add a box spring foundation for an extra $200 and have it shipped along with your mattress.

My mom needed a new bed for her guest room. The bed she currently has in there is over 30 years old and so is the box spring! So both had to be replaced. I ordered a full size mattress and box spring.

The mattress will come in a box that looks like this.

GhostBed Unboxing

Ghostbed wrappedThe GhostBed comes compressed and wrapped in plastic like the other bed in a box brands. It expands fairly quickly though and you could sleep on it after just a few hours.

A nice surprise is a free t-shirt found when the mattress expands.

Here’s what it looks like a few minutes after opening.

The Ghost Bed Foundation

I put together the box spring with a Philips screwdriver. I didn’t have a drill at my mom’s house so this was all done by hand. It took about an hour but just goes to show that it can be done.

The slats stay connected with a piece of cloth stapled to them to ensure adequate spacing.

box spring

You also get a cover for your box spring that matches your mattress.

My GhostBed Findings

The GhostBed comes in at 11 inches high while many others come in at 10 inches and you can feel the difference. The GhostBed just feels more substantial and doesn’t bottom out like a cheaper mattress can. Both of these mattresses have a top layer of latex.

GhostBed Mattress Construction

Below is the inside of the GhostBed. Like most of the mattresses I have reviewed, there are 3 layers. The base layer is 7.5 inches, followed by a 2-inch gel memory foam layer that helps with cooling and finally the 1.5 latex foam top.

Here’s a look at the top layer of latex

top layer of ghostbed

Here’s how the layers of the GhostBed react

You’ll also get a little bounce with this mattress.

The GhostBed offers great support but also sinks a little more than some of the latex/foam mattresses I have tested which helps with pressure relief.

ghostbed sinkageHere’s a look at how it handles edge support.

ghostbed edge supportThe accelerometer reading below shows that the bed will have some residual bounce/motion. More than other mattresses I have tested which makes it better bouncing around!

My GhostBed Mattress Recommendation

The GhostBed is a solid choice for people who want some bounce in their mattress but also want the advantages of a memory foam bed. The Ghost Bed will keep you cool too. The combination of cooling gel foam below ventilated latex is a nice touch.  It comes with a 101-night trial so you can get a full refund if not completely satisfied.

Dromma Bed Review 1

Dromma Bed Review

The Dromma Bed has been discontinued. Please check out our other mattress reviews.

I received a free Dromma mattress to review. The Dromma Mattress is a thicker mattress with 2 different comfort options, medium soft or medium firm. I reviewed the medium soft as I haven’t reviewed a truly soft mattress with a top latex layer so I thought this would be something unique to the market.

Ordering the Dromma Bed

You can expect your Dromma mattress to arrive in about 5-7 business days from placing your order. It’s made in the USA so there’s no delay in shipping. It’s easy to order online and you get standard tracking information so you know when to expect your mattress.  It comes in a box which makes it easy to transport to any room in your house.

Here’s a video giving an overview of the Dromma Bed and an unboxing.

How much does the Dromma Bed Cost?

Twin XL$674.00
Cal King$1,099.00

Construction of the Dromma Mattress

  • 1.5″ Top Layer of Adapt Ultra-Responsive Performance Foam – provides support & bounce, with open cell technology for increased air circulation.
  • 2.5″ Preserve VG Visco Elastic Cooling Gel Memory Foam Layer – helps to keep your bed from overheating, and provides additional contouring for neck, back and hip comfort. This layer also uses a more eco-friendly, bio based foam replacing much of the traditional petroleum based foam formulation for a natural soy based formulation.
  • 8” Ultra supportive, eco-friendly, memory foam core offers ideal comfort for all sleep styles and preferences.

Dromma is a a 12 inch mattress. As of a few months ago the standard was 10 inches so Dromma along with others have upped the standard. This mattress does a wonderful job of temperature regulation for a soft mattress since the top layer is latex with a cooling gel foam beneath it.

Dromma Bed Mattress Construction

Another unique feature of the Dromma bed is that it uses a “bio-foam” which is basically memory foam with a portion of it being a soy-based product instead of petrochemicals. I don’t know the exact amount replaced but the fact that they are trying to move in that direction is promising.

Here’s what it looks like under the covers.

dromma layers

Here’s how the layers react…

Dromma is one of the best soft mattresses for motion transfer. It is a “Yummy” mattress like the Noomi but since it has a latex top, it will recover faster.

This mattress is definitely on the softer side among all the mattresses I have reviewed. Because of that, you will inevitably lose some support. I recommend this mattress most for side sleepers. You will “sleep in” this mattress instead of “sleep on” it. There’s a good amount of sinkage.

Dromma depth

There are so many mattress in a box companies right now that there is bound to be some confusion. To help clarify and guide you to the right mattress, I would say that this is a unique mattress among the foam/latex mattresses on the market. It is softer than the  Brentwood Home S-Bed, and Eve Mattress. That’s because the top latex layer is thinner and softer allowing you to get more of the feel of the middle memory foam layer.

My Dromma Bed Recommendation

The Dromma (medium soft) brings a unique feel to the mattress space. Because it is on the softer end of the spectrum it lacks edge support and a bit of base layer support but what you do get is great pressure relief and a great mattress for sinking into. If you like innerspring mattresses with a pillow top, this would be a good choice for making the transition to foam.

Can’t go to sleep? Maybe you should try Zotto sleep. I was given a free Zotto Sleep mattress to review.  It’s the latest memory foam mattress in a box and it brings a unique feel to the crowded market. It’s firm but also a bit squishy. If you like sleeping on a mattress instead of in one, this might be the mattress for you.

Zotto started as a Kickstarter campaign and was a very successful one. Below is their Kickstarter video that gives an overview of how the company was started and how their mattress is made:

Unboxing the Zotto Mattress

The Zotto unboxes just like all the other memory foam mattresses. It comes compressed in a box and inflates to form.

Specifications and Construction of the Zotto

The Zotto mattress prices are as follows:

Twin                            $550
Twin XL                       $600
Full                              $750
Queen                         $875
King                            $995
California King            $995

My Zotto Sleep Mattress Review

Zotto has 4 layers with the top layer being a cooling gel layer.

zotto sleep

Below is a video that illustrates how the layers will react. Notice that the top two layers are significantly slower to recover. This will give you better cradling and pressure relief. The other two layers work together as a base layer and prevent you from sinking in too much.

Because of the soft top layers and the fact that this is an all foam mattress, you will lose bounce and motion transfer.

Below is an illustration of sinkage.

I have been sleeping on the Zotto for about 4 weeks now and it is a great mattress. I would recommend this mattress to people that don’t want to sink in to their mattress but want the benefits of pressure relief. This mattress is soft and so will not `recover as quickly as some mattresses with a latex layer.  It is firmer than the Alexander at a medium firmness and firmer than the YogaBed as well. That said, it would be the perfect mattress for overweight people looking for a quality, durable memory foam mattress that won’t sink in on them.

My Zotto Mattress Recommendation

Zotto offers a unique feel and level of comfort that will appeal to people looking for a memory foam mattress that is soft, supportive and feels substantial. The mattress is thick and does not have the light airy feel like a Leesa but that can be an advantage, especially with heavy sleepers.

Loom and Leaf Mattress Review | Sleeping in a Cloud!

Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.

The Loom and Leaf mattress is a relatively new memory foam mattress on the market that was developed by the makers of Saatva.  I received a free Loom & Leaf mattress to review. After a few nights on this bed, I am very impressed. What struck me about this mattress is just how substantial it is.

Ordering the Loom and Leaf Mattress

The Loom and Leaf mattress ordering process is slightly different than ordering a typical bed in a box mattress. That’s because this mattress does not come in a box. Instead, you first enter your zip code to determine if it can be delivered to your area. Chances are this is not a problem. You can then choose your size of the mattress as well as if you want a box spring or not. If you already have an adequate box spring or slats, this is not necessary. If in doubt about the integrity of your existing support, I would recommend buying one since you don’t want to wreck your mattress on an uneven foundation. I had a split queen foundation delivered and it is very sturdy and well made.  Once you place your order you will get a call in a few days to set up delivery. That process is very professional and seamless. You schedule your delivery date then get a more narrow delivery window a few days before the delivery date so you don’t feel tethered to your house all day. The moving company even called me 15 minutes before arrival which was a nice courtesy. If you like, Loom and Leaf can even haul away your old mattress.

How Much Does the Loom and Leaf Mattress Cost?

Below are the latest prices of the mattress as listed on their website.

SizeRetail Price
Twin XL$999
Cal King$1,799

My Loom and Leaf Mattress Findings

The Loom and Leaf mattress is a heavy duty mattress. By that, I mean that it is very substantial. I didn’t feel like I was going to bottom out on it when I plopped down on the mattress. That’s because it has a 5 lb. memory foam base layer.

In keeping with the substantial/heavy duty mattress theme, the Loom and Leaf is listed as being 12 inches in depth. However, with the tufting on top, I found it to actually be a little deeper than that.

Loom and Leaf

Speaking of the tufting on the top layer. I found this to be a very nice feature that you don’t find on many memory foam beds.

Aside from the tufting which adds to contouring, this mattress also incorporates cooling gel that also provides some support but more importantly cooling. The final distinctive feature of this mattress is the convoluted foam. This also promotes air circulation. The organic cotton top layer is a nice touch too.

Sleeping on the Loom and Leaf mattress was so nice. It won’t leave you with any pressure points which means less shifting around during the night. When my wife and I slept on it, we didn’t notice much motion transfer either that’s to be expected with a memory foam mattress. Below is a video illustrating the motion isolation.

Here’s a video that gives you an idea of how squishy and how fast the Loom and Leaf mattress recovers. Very impressive.

loom and leaf reviewsloom and leaf reviewsMy Loom and Leaf Recommendation

The Loom and Leaf is a very well made and extremely comfortable mattress. It easily holds its own against the top of the line store brands. Loom and Leaf offers a 75 day trial period. If you don’t like it you can return it for a full refund and won’t be tied to store credit.  I recommend this mattress for all types of sleepers. I get asked for recommendations for mattresses for heavy people. I am over 200 lbs and didn’t bottom out the mattress while jumping on it. It is substantial enough for a heavy couple that wants to get adequate support. If you are looking for the best mattress for heavy people, this is it! Definitely, give the Loom and Leaf some serious consideration as your next luxury mattress. Shop Loom & Leaf Here.

Looking at other Loom and Leaf Reviews, I have found that they consistently seem to score this a little on the firmer side. I would say any Loom and Leaf reviews that rank this as softer may not have as much context reviewing other mattresses.

Please note that Loom and Leaf does not offer coupon codes. They always advertise the lowest price.

Labor Day Mattress Sale 2016| What’s On Sale?

Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.

The biggest weekend for mattress sales is almost upon us, the labor day mattress sale 2016 extravaganza. That would be the Labor Day mattress sale. Labor Day is a big transition in for many families as kids go back to school, vacation come to an end and things start getting a little more structured.

This weekend and for that matter, the whole month of August is a boon for mattress sellers. Mailboxes start receiving the Red Plum marketing flyers filled with “deal of the year” mattress discounts creating a sense of urgency to buy.

mattress firm ad

Take the ad above. Mattress firm is selling a Sealy Posturepedic for $449 on “sale”. They also look to be targeting the back to school crowd as students head off to college. It’s not clear which model of Sealy Posturepedic is on sale for $449 either. Your only choice is firm which won’t appeal to some sleepers. This teaser ad will get you in the store thinking you will get the $449 but leave with something at least twice that.  Also, once you make your purchase you most likely will only be able to return it for store credit.

Instead, why not give some of the new mattress startups a try? They eliminate brick and mortar all together and best of all you don’t have to deal with a salesperson or any sales pressure. You get to bring the showroom to your bedroom. The majority of mattress startups I review have very generous trial periods, usually around 100 day where they deliver the mattress to you and you can sleep in it in your own environment to really see if you like it. If you’re not happy with the mattress they will take it back and give you a full refund of your money, not store credit.

That means if you bought a mattress from say Leesa or Nest, on Labor Day, you could sleep on it until around mid December and still return it if not satisfied.

Finally, what makes these online companies so much better is that you maximum value. Take for instance the Alexander Signature Select from Nest.

If you are still determined to go to a mattress store on Labor Day weekend such as Mattress Firm, Sleepy’s, don’t fall for the high pressure tactics. You can always come back or check competitors online. If find a mattress in a store that you really like, I can suggest comparable mattresses from my reviews that you may want to try out so you can save yourself some serious money.

Happy Shopping!

Saatva vs WinkBed 1

Saatva vs WinkBed

Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.

I received both the Saatva and WinkBed  for free to review. I have an affiliate agreement with both of these companies as well.
People often ask me about the primary technical differences between Saatva and WinkBeds. In this post I do a comparison of WinkBeds vs Saatva to help readers make an informed choice and learn more about each of these mattresses.
Overall Construction
On the surface, these beds may appear to be quite similar, but when we dig a little deeper, we’ll see that they have unique qualities and components. Here is a simple look at how each bed is constructed:
Top Layer
Winkbeds has a top layer of cotton and high tensile-strength polyester blend while Saatva uses an organic cotton layer. Underneath the organic cotton layer, Saatva uses a natural thistle to serve as a natural fire barrier.
We’ll dive into each component piece by piece, but in general, WinkBeds uses twice the amount of coils and twice the amount of cushioning foam in its sleep surface as the Saatva mattress. These components give the WinkBed a unique feel, great support, great durability.
Sleep Surface
sleep surface saatva
2” sleep surface is comprised of 1” of hypersoft foam and 1” of cooling gel foam, each of 1.5 lb density. Hand stitched into the mattress.
1” sleep surface is made of .625” soft foam and .375” visco foam. Visco foam is commonly referred to as memory foam.
WinkBeds’ foam blend is soft and resilient so it provides good pressure point relief and does not retain heat. Saatva’s cushion layer feels great as well and has more of a tufted top than the Winkbed.
Comfort Layer
2.4” layer of individually wrapped/pocketed micro coils (or AirSprings, as they call them.) Highest coil count with 1722/King
4” layer of individually wrapped coils, with a solid coil count of 1088/King. Please note that these are heavy duty coils so they will hold up over time.
Support Layer
comfort layer
1054/King individually wrapped 8” high profile pocket coils. High gauge wire of 17. Support core is encased along the edges by a 4.5” layer of foam and along the top using a 0.5” layer of pre-compressed densified cotton.
520/King 7” Bonnell Coil Innerspring with 13 gauge wire and foam encasement. Steel edge guards and 1/2″ Loft Pad + 7/8″ Fiber Pad Bottom.
WinkBeds is using over twice the amount of coils in the support layer. This is important to prevent sagging and to ensure a personalized feel, especially for people in the higher weight ranges. WinkBeds uses a high density foam for edge support while Saatva uses steel edge guards. WinkBeds’ foam edge guards allow for use with a adjustable frame while Saatva’s edge guards do not.
WinkBeds uses 1.5 lb density foam in its mattress which is definitely durable. WinkBeds also sent their bed to a lab for third party durability testing. You can see video’s of the test being performed below:

Saatva uses a range of foams in its mattress from 1.2 lb density to 2 lb. It has solid construction and should hold up over time.
While both companies use solid materials in the construction, WinkBeds really seems to have gone the extra mile to get their mattress third party tested. The test they used is called the constant force fatigue test, which simulates dropping a 168 lb weight on a block of foam 80,000 times. That is far more abuse than a mattress will ever see in a person’s home, even over a 20 year period. The results showed just a 2% compression in the foam over the course of the test, which is a great result.
Given my experience on both mattresses, I find the each has their own unique strengths. Saatva is 100% made in the USA. Winkbeds can be used on adjustable frames which are becoming more popular. Read the full reviews to get a sense of how they feel to see which one is right for you!

Nest Bedding is one of my favorite mattress companies. That’s because they provide amazing products at great prices. In this review, I test out the Alexander Signature Select mattress from Nest Bedding. This bed is a significant step up from the vast majority of online mattress brands. Nest is one of the few companies started by a mattress industry veteran and true mattress craftsman, Joe Alexander. His dedication to making quality affordable mattresses really shows in the Nest Signature.

Purchasing & Unboxing The Nest Bedding Signature Flippable Mattress

I recently received the Nest Alexander Signature Select (medium) mattress from Nest Bedding to review. The Nest Bedding Signature mattress comes in a box like the one below with the Nest branding.

Below are the current prices before applying the 8% discount.

Twin XL$1,099
California King$1,499

When unboxing the mattress, you will notice that it is NOT folded in half. Why does this matter? It matters because folding the mattress on itself and compressing it can cause unnecessary stress and may affect the overall lifespan of the mattress.Since Nest is a relatively small company in comparison to some of the other players in the mattress industry, they are very responsive and can make sure you get the right bed for your needs. Don’t be surprised to get an email response from Joe, quickly. Nest is known for their dedicated customer service. Not only are they responsive but they know their product and will be able to effectively address any questions you have.

Construction of the Nest Bedding Flippable Mattress

You can choose from 3 levels of firmness which is another distinguishing feature of Nest Bedding that sets the Alexander Signature Select apart from the likes of the one mattress for all model.

The Alexander Signature Series is made using a breathable, durable pressure-relieving, cooling Gel Foam, and a support base layer convoluted foam. They use CertiPUR-US Gel Foam and Support Base Foams.

The Alexander Mattress is so far my favorite mattress. As you can see, this is a very substantial mattress.

My Nest Bedding Signature Flippable Mattress Findings

The Alexander Signature Select mattress also has very little motion transfer. This is right up there with top of the line memory foam mattresses in terms of motion transfer. But what makes this mattress better is that you don’t get that stuck in the mud feeling. You sink in just enough and the mattress recovers very rapidly.

All these tests are done on a medium firmness mattress. You can extrapolate how a firm and soft would sink in from this picture. This mattress has just the right amount of sink for me. My wife also found this mattress to be a little softer than the Love Bed which she preferred. That said, this bed is more accommodating to various sleep preferences than most of the other beds I have reviewed.

Nest Alexander Trial Period and Nest Bedding Comfort Guarantee

Nest has one of the best trial periods in the industry. They give you 101 days to try out their mattress in the comfort of your home. If for whatever reason you don’t like it, they will take it back and give you a full refund.

Beyond that, Nest offers an industry-leading Lifetime Comfort Guarantee. Here are the highlights of this program. More details can be found here.

Our Industry First Lifetime Comfort Guarantee© affords the original purchaser of any Nest Bedding mattress the peace of mind of knowing Nest Bedding cares about your comfort for the lifetime of your mattress. Here is how it works:

1. During the first 100 nights of ownership from date of delivery, you (the original purchaser) may initiate an exchange or return of your mattress for any comfort issue, for a 100% money-back guarantee, or exchange to any other bed in our lineup. Please remember that it can take a few weeks to adjust to any new mattress so we kindly ask that you give the bed a full 30 nights trial before contacting us about exchanging or returning.

2. After the 100 night’s trial, for the remaining lifetime of the mattress, if your needs change and you find you need a firmer or softer mattress, or you need to change to a small or larger size than your original purchase, you may do so at 50% of the current retail price.

In conclusion, Nest Bedding has continued to outperform the majority of online mattress companies because they focus on continuous improvement. They are constantly upgrading their products to have the best technology along with the best customer service. When you rest with Nest, you get the best!

My Nest Bedding Signature Flippable Recommendation

I have been a big fan of Nest Bedding since starting Sleep Sherpa and they continue to provide quality mattresses at a competitive price. This mattress is really two mattresses in one and chances are you are going to love it. If not, you’re backed by their 100 Night Trial and lifetime comfort guarantee where after the trial has expired, you can still return it and buy a different mattress from Nest at half price.
