A mattress topper is a great bedding accessory to indulge in. A good quality mattress topper protects your mattress from general dust and stains. This not only helps in keeping the mattress clean for a longer time but also helps in improving the mattress’s quality and life span. Apart from this a good quality mattress topper also gives the added benefit of extra cushiony comfort and good support. All these qualities make the mattress topper a “must-have” in any bedroom.

The real question now is how long does the mattress topper last? Do you have to change it often or is it a one-time purchase? Something that you can just buy and forget about till you have to change your mattress itself? This point is important since you need to do the math regarding the purchase point of the mattress topper vs the life expectancy of the same. This article will help you understand this key point so that you can plan your purchases accordingly.

What is a Mattress Topper?

In simple words, a mattress topper is a bedding accessory that is placed on top of the existing mattress. It is thin and is secured with the help of side elastic bands or even tie-up tassels. The primary function of a mattress topper is to give an extra layer of comfort and increase the shelf life of the mattress. It also with keeps the underlying mattress clean and stain-free.

A mattress topper comes in different forms and sizes to suit individual preferences. You can also choose from different materials including organic latex and hypoallergenic materials to give you the best possible comfort level. The market is flooded with add-on features in mattress toppers like a breathable surface that improves air circulation and extra padding to give you a sinking cloud-like experience. Mattress toppers are also popularly known as mattress pads or mattress protectors.

Why Do You Need a Mattress Topper?

A lot of people feel that a mattress topper is just a useless money-making hack employed by manufacturers for added sale with little to support its credit. It is generally not viewed as a good value-for-money option. However, there are some key benefits to having a mattress topper over your mattress. These are listed below:

  • Gives your mattress a better lifespan
  • Helps in making the bed cozier and plusher for a better comfort level
  • You can change the firmness level of your mattress with a mattress topper making it softer or firmer as you desire
  • It keeps the mattress stain-free and traps the dirt preventing it from seeping into the mattress
  • All mattress toppers can be machine washed which helps in maintaining bed hygiene

What is the Life Expectancy of a Mattress Topper?

The basic life span of a mattress topper depends on various factors ranging from its material composition, thickness level, and the quality of construction. All of these make it a little difficult to give an absolute figure for the life of the mattress topper. However, on an average a good quality mattress topper lasts anywhere between 3 to 5 years. A poorly constructed mattress topper will only last for a year or a maximum of two years. A lot of people think that since both the mattress and the mattress toppers are made from similar materials, they have similar life spans. Unfortunately, that is not true. A mattress topper lasts for a lower duration than the average mattress which boasts a good 7-to-10-year lifespan.

At the lower end of the spectrum, any mattress topper will give you at least 6 to 8 months before giving up. At best, a mattress topper can last as long as your mattress depending on the frequency of use and the construction quality. Good maintenance will add value to your mattress topper and help you prolong its lifetime. As a rule of thumb, a mattress topper with a 3 to 5 years lifetime is considered a good value-for-money option. So, you can go ahead and buy a mattress topper that comes with a 3-to-5-year warranty with an easy mind.

Factors That Determine the Lifespan of a Mattress Topper

Just like any other bedding accessory, certain factors determine how long the mattress topper will last. Knowing about these factors will help you get a good estimate of how long you can reasonably expect your mattress topper to last. This way you do not have to blindly trust the friendly salesman. These factors will also help you pick the best mattress topper of the lot that will not only suit your comfort needs but also give your mattress good resilience and added life.

  • Material Composition

The primary factor that determines the life of any mattress topper is the material that it is made up off. The quality of the material as well as the type of material used in the mattress topper construction governs its longevity. A mattress topper made with high-quality materials like wool or latex will last longer than one made with low-quality cotton. Also, a gel-infused mattress topper will last you anywhere between 10 to 15 years as opposed to a normal tufted topper that will only give you a maximum of 5 years.

  • Environmental Factors

The second most important factor that affects the life of a mattress topper is the elements that the mattress topper is exposed to. If you live in a place with a lot of dust and other particulate matters, your mattress topper will accumulate more dust and get dirty quickly. This will in turn mean that your mattress topper will undergo a lot more washes which will decrease its lifespan. Similarly, if you have pets, then the topper will be prone to allergens like pet dander which will affect its fibers and ultimately its lifespan.

  • Body Weight

The higher the weight that the mattress topper supports regularly the higher the duress that it experiences. The mattress topper will over time develop indentations and compressions in the frequently used areas which result in the wearing off the topper. The higher the weight the quicker these indentations will appear lowering the quality and the ultimately the life of the mattress topper.

  • Maintenance

Every household item’s lifespan directly depends upon the maintenance and upkeep of the item. If you care for the mattress topper well by keeping it clean and using it as directed by the manufacturer, then the lifespan of the topper automatically increases. Regular cleaning of your mattress topper will keep it in good working condition ensuring that you get the required comfort and support for an extended time.

  • Mattress Condition

Not many people understand this, but the overall condition of your mattress topper depends very heavily on the condition of your mattress on which it is placed. If your mattress is sagging with compressions, then this will cause your mattress topper to sag and develop indentations quickly. This is because ultimately it is the mattress that forms the base of the mattress topper. Hence if your mattress is old then the mattress topper will have a reduced lifespan as compared to another mattress topper.

  • The thickness of the Topper

The thicker the mattress topper the longer its lifespan will be. This is because the thickness will absorb the weight on the topper better than a thinner version keeping the lumpiness at bay.

How To Increase the Lifespan of a Mattress Topper?

Now that you understand the various factors that cause the wear and tear of the mattress topper you can easily improve the quality and lifespan of the mattress topper to give you an extra few years. Some of how you can improve the working condition of the topper are:

  • Good maintenance and care
  • The topper should be placed on a good firm mattress
  • Rotate the mattress topper and flip it upside down every two weeks for an even use
  • Compress the mattress topper for storage purposes
  • Use a protective cover and good-quality fitted sheets for your mattress topper

Final Thoughts On Mattress Topper Lifespans

The bottom line to how long your mattress topper will last depends upon a lot of factors including your personal sleep preferences. For some people, the mattress topper might last a good 7 to 10 years whereas for others it might only be good for a few years or even just one year.  A good mattress topper should last you between 3 to 5 years. Any topper that comes with a warranty of under 3 years should be avoided. Apart from this, you should keep in mind that any mattress topper can be made to last longer with proper care and maintenance.

Sleep is essential for a balanced mind and body. Unfortunately, sleep is not as easy to come by as it used to be. High on the list of things affecting your sleep quality are your sleep products ranging from pillows, sheets to mattresses. Now, mattresses play an extremely important part of getting you that sound and restful sleep, but it is not always an affordable option.

A good quality mattress can set you back by quite a few bucks. This is where mattress toppers come to play. Mattress toppers help in both prolonging the mattress lifespan and making your used mattress to work effectively for a couple more years.  They can help you save on the cost by giving a new life to your old and lifeless mattress as well as increasing the life of your brand-new mattress.

There are a few considerations that you should keep in mind before you buy the mattress topper. This article will guide you through those considerations and help you find the right mattress topper that will save you the cost of investing in a new mattress without compromising on your beauty sleep.

What is a Mattress Topper?

A Mattress topper is essentially a thin layer of padding that is kept on top of the mattress. Its basic function is to provide extra comfort and support by an added layer of cushioning. They generally made of three types of materials, namely:

  • Down
  • Foam
  • Wool

Apart from these, you can choose between gel-infused mattress toppers to extra support providing mattress toppers as well. Mattress toppers are more cost-effective alternatives to mattress replacement.

Difference between Mattress Topper and Mattress Pads

There a lot of confusion regarding mattress toppers and mattress pads or protectors. Mattress pads are a thin layer that is used for protecting the mattress from dust, moisture, and stains. Mattress pads are not used for cushioning and added support. This thin layer of material might provide a little extra cushioning, but unlike mattress toppers, mattress pads are not used for that purpose.

Mattress toppers, on the other hand, are not meant for protecting the mattress but are used for added support and better comfort.

A mattress topper is a thick piece of foam or pillow-top material that goes underneath your mattress pad or protector. A mattress pad is made from more plush materials and is used to make your bed feel more cozy. A mattress topper is often confused with a mattress protector and is used to increase the firmness, thickness or feel of your mattress. A mattress pad is a thin material that is attached to straps or a fitted sheet. A mattress protector is a thinner, designed to protect a mattress from spills and contaminants. A mattress topper is a thicker, extra-soft material that’s usually added to a mattress. Mattress protectors come in different shapes and sizes, with different features. You can choose a protector that meets your specific needs. You may not need a mattress pad or mattress protector if you have a bed that is at least 18 inches thick. If you have a bed that is less than 18 inches thick, you may need

  1. Mattress toppers are generally more thick and supportive than a mattress pad, and mattress pads often use cotton or more plush materials to soften up a bed.
  2. A mattress topper is a thick piece of foam or pillow-top material that goes underneath your mattress pad or protector.
  3. A mattress protector doesn’t include padding. It’s used to protect a mattress from spilled liquids and contaminants like allergens, bed bugs, and dust mites.
  4. Mattress Toppers are designed to protect a mattress from accidental spills, whereas Mattress Pads are not.
  5. Mattress Toppers are machine washable and come with a lifetime warranty, while Mattresses Pads typically do not.
  6. Mattress Toppers can be used on any type of bed, while Mattresses Pads typically only work with certain types of mattresses.
  7. Mattress Topper is a thin, cushion-like product that is placed on top of your existing mattress and is designed to protect it from spills and stains.
  8. Mattress Pads are thicker pieces of fabric or foam that are placed on either side of your bed and are designed to act as a shock absorber, keep the bed frame stable during sleep, and prevent noise from traveling up through the bedding.
  9. Mattress Pads should be replaced every 6 to 12 months, depending on frequency of use, whereas Mattress Toppers can last up to 2 years.

Types of Mattress Toppers

  • Mattress toppers are classified depending on the type of material used in their construction. There are essentially five types of mattress toppers available in the market. These include:

    1. Foam and Memory Foam: These mattress toppers are the most popular. This is because memory foam is a medium soft material that easily molds to your body structure, giving you that extra comfort. At the same time, it does not sink with your weight. This evenly distributes your body weight, giving you the required support.
    2. Down Feather: This is the softest mattress topper option. If you are looking for a plush and luxurious mattress topper in which you can simply revel in the softness, then down feather is the best option for you. However, it does not give adequate support and is not suitable for sensitive people prone to allergies.
    3. Wool: These are the best bed for those living in colder regions with hard winters. These are excellent at regulating body temperatures, but they are also the most expensive of the lot. Apart from this, wool toppers are also not readily available in the market.
    4. Latex: Latex is made from natural materials and is suitable for those prone to allergies. However, you might want to make sure that you do not suffer from any latex allergies. Latex toppers are a little expensive than foam and feather options, and they are also prone to discoloration in the long run.
    5. Cotton and Polyester: These are the cheapest mattress toppers. They also offer excellent breathability features and rank high on softness. But, cotton toppers are prone to easy wear and tear and are not adept at providing good support to the body.

There are several types of mattress toppers available on the market, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Memory foam is often lauded for its contouring ability, which can help alleviate pressure points. However, some users find that memory foam has an initial odor that dissipates over time. Down feather toppers are known for their luxurious feel, but they may lose feathers over time and need to be fluffed periodically. Regular pillow material toppers are a more affordable option, but they may not provide the same level of support as memory foam or down feather. Ultimately, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of each type of material before making a decision.

    1. Mattress toppers are available in a variety of materials: Mattress toppers can be made with different types of foam, down feathers, or regular pillow material.
    2. There are pros and cons to each type of material: Memory foam often has an odor at first, while down feather may lose feathers over time.
    3. Consider the positives and negatives before making a decision: The different types of materials have their own pros and cons.

Reasons to Buy a Mattress Topper

  • There are several reasons to invest in a good mattress topper at any point in your mattress life. Some of the reasons that will make you reach out for your wallet are:

    1. Cost-Effective Solution
    2. Extra Comfort
    3. Improves Mattress Support
    4. Even Body Weight Distribution
    5. Improves Mattress Lifespan

There are many reasons to buy a mattress topper. The most common reason is to make the bed more comfortable. A topper can also be used to extend the life of a mattress or to match a sleeper’s sleep style.

A mattress topper can help make a bed more comfortable by increasing the firmness of the mattress. This can be especially helpful for people who have back pain or need extra support for their spine. There are different types of firmness available, so it is important to choose the right one for the user.

People who like a soft and fluffy feel might want to buy a mattress topper that is made of feathers. Feathers are cheaper than other materials, so this can be a good option for people on a budget.

When to Buy a Mattress Topper

A Mattress topper is a cost-effective solution, but only if you are looking for:

  • Better Comfort
  • Added Support

A mattress topper can help soften your sleeping surface to adding a layer of extra comfort. It also helps by providing better weight distribution. However, a mattress topper cannot help you if your regular mattress is too old, lumpy, and sagging. This is generally the case with mattresses over 10 to 15 years old that have been regularly used. You will be better advised to replace your mattress in this condition since a mattress topper will only be a short term fix and a long term expensive deal in such a situation.

Buying Guide for a Mattress Topper

    1. Usage: If you are looking for better support, good firmness, or relief from chronic pains and pressure points, then you should look for the memory foam options. These hold the body shape and give good contour features with even weight distribution and excellent lumbar support.
    2. Comfort: For enhanced comfort and better plush, you cannot go wrong with cotton/polyester blend or the ever-popular down feather. However, your definition of comfort and softness might be different. If you are looking for comfort with support, then softer and thicker memory foam is your best bet.
    3. Density: You get toppers ranging from 2 inches to 8 inches in density. The higher the level of comfort and softness you need, the higher the density you should be looking out for. Contradictorily the higher the level of support you want, the lower the density should be. If you are a side sleeper, have an old mattress, or are heavier in weight, then a higher density is better.

Both memory foam and latex come in plenty of density options. You can easily find the density level to suit your exact preference. Other materials are a bit trickier in this department.

    1. Sensitivity and Allergies: While down feathers are best for a rich softness, they are also not suitable for those prone to allergies or with sensitive skin and temperament. Cotton is the most hypoallergenic amidst all the toppers. Even latex is a good option in this category.
    2. Temperature Regulation: The material of the topper can help you with even body regulation through the night. Wool, cotton, and down feather are the best body temperature, regulators. They are warm in winter and remain cool in summers.

Memory foam and latex are the worse. They tend to trap body heat, and you might wake up sweating in the middle of the night. The thicker the mattress topper, the worse it can get. However, there are options for memory foam mattresses as well, like gel-infused memory foam that helps to keep the body temperature even.

    1. Noise Isolation: The best option for reducing noise while tossing, turning, or getting in and out of bed is memory foam and latex. You will not get disturbed by shifting around on the mattress with these materials.
    2. Cleaning and Maintenance: Mostly, toppers will have to be spot cleaned. Once again, memory foam and latex are the easiest to clean. Cotton is also simple. However, down and wool can get difficult to clean. So make your choice accordingly.
    3. Warranty: Mattress toppers come with 1 to 5 years of warranty. This does not include sagging of the topper due to weight.
    4. Price: This is a very important factor to take into consideration while looking for a mattress topper. Keep a figure in mind and try to find the best available option in that price frame. You should look for the highest value for money option rather than going for the most expensive or even the cheaper options.

There are a few things you should keep in mind when purchasing a mattress topper. Firstly, consider the price—you don’t want to overspend on something that will only offer subpar comfort. It’s also important to think about the topper’s durability—you’ll want something that will last through many nights of use. Finally, test the topper before you buy it to make sure it’s comfortable for you. With these factors in mind, you’ll be sure to find the best mattress topper for your needs.

How Effective Are Mattress Toppers?

Mattress Toppers have proven to be highly functional and effective at improving comfort and body support.

A mattress topper can be a good way to improve the comfort of your bed. They are often less expensive than replacing an entire mattress, and many are made with breathable materials that can help keep you cool in the summer. Mattress toppers can also add some extra support if you have a problem with your spine or spinal cord.

Which Is the Best Topper for Relieving Joint Aches?

Memory foam mattress topper is the best mattress topper for relieving joint aches and pressure point symptoms. Cool gel memory foam is a better option since it even regulates your body temperature.

There are three main types of mattress toppers that are effective for relieving joint pain: memory foam, gel, and latex. Of these, memory foam is the most popular option and is often the most recommended by doctors. Memory foam contours to your body and provides support where you need it most. It is also very effective at absorbing impact, which can help to reduce pain in your joints. Gel and latex mattress toppers are also effective at relieving joint pain. They are both softer than memory foam, which can make them more comfortable for some people. Gel mattress toppers are also good at absorbing impact and helping to reduce pain.

What Is the Ideal Thickness for Mattress Topper?

The right thickness is very personal. It is different for everybody and depends entirely on your individual preference. A 3-inch thickness is generally preferred for providing optimal comfort and support.

Mattress toppers come in a variety of different thicknesses, each with its own benefits. The thickness you should choose depends on your personal preferences and needs.

Thin mattress toppers (under two inches) are less popular because they don’t provide much extra support or cushioning. If you do choose a thin topper, make sure it is made of a high-quality material that will still be comfortable.

Medium-thickness mattress toppers (two to four inches) are the most popular option. They provide a balance of comfort and support, and can be made from a variety of materials. This is a good option for most people.

Thick mattress toppers (over four inches) are best for people who want extra comfort and support. They can sink you into the mattress, making it difficult to move around, but many people find them very cozy.

Conclusion

Mattress Toppers are great at enhancing the quality of your sleep. You can choose one, depending on the level of comfort you want. It can be a soft feather topper to give plushness to your firm mattress or a firm memory foam topper to boost the level of spinal support. At the end of the day, you will not regret buying mattress toppers for your new or aging mattress.

A mattress topper is a cheaper way to change the feel of your bed, but it’s not as durable as a traditional mattress. It can enhance comfort, but it’s not as versatile as a traditional mattress. Mattress toppers come in a variety of styles and prices. It is important to test different mattress toppers to find the best one for you.

The Perfectly Snug mattress topper is a unique way to control the climate of your bed. The most common cooling feature among mattresses now is cool to the touch, phase change technology. This is a chemical coating that is applied to the mattress that will initially draw heat away for about 20-30 minutes when you lie down on the mattress to cool you off. The drawback to this is that after that initial cooling phase, the mattress will start to retain heat, especially if its a memory foam mattress. In this review, I take a look at what makes the Perfectly Snug topper an interesting choice and may be the solution you need to stay at an optimal temperature all night from head to toe.

Ordering the Perfectly Snug Mattress Topper

This topper is available exclusively through the Perfectly Snug website. Shipping took about a couple of weeks and I was given a king-size topper for review. The box it came in wasn’t terribly big but you may need a couple people to bring it into your bedroom and get it on your mattress.

Right out of the box, the topper is ready to use. to get started just position it on your bed with the plug adapters facing the top of the bed.

power cords

There are two sets of plugs that provide power to each side of the topper. Once these are plugged in, you can begin using the topper right away by powering it on at the switch on either side.

perfectly snug power switch

It’s very easy to access these controls at night and the interface is simple so that you can adjust it at night without having to turn on a light. There is a small speaker that will also tell you what setting it is on so you don’t have to look at anything. You can also download the app for the topper which can then control it and dynamically adjust the temperature throughout the night. The app at the time of this review was still a little rough around the edges but like with most apps, it should continue to improve over time.

Construction of the Perfectly Snug Topper

There are multiple components to this topper to make it work the way it does. Underneath the cover you will find a memory foam layer as the base. This provides a decent amount of pressure relief if your mattress is already too firm.

topper layers

The layer above that is a mesh material that is used so that air can circulate through the top. This actually makes the topper a firmer towards the top and will give your mattress a medium-firm feel where you won’t sink in all that much.

perfectly snug mesh

The last major component are the fans at the bottom corners of the topper. These fans aren’t noticeable at low settings but as you progress towards the coldest settings you will hear the fan noise which can double as a pleasant white noise to help you sleep. These fans don’t take up much space on the topper and I didn’t feel them at all when I slept.

Lastly, you can remove the cover of the topper if needed by accessing the buttons on the bottom. I wouldn’t recommend it but I believe it is available if it gets dirty.

How Much Does the Perfectly Snug Topper Cost?

Below are the retail prices of the topper as of this writing. Keep in mind that the twin and full sizes only have 1 zone while the larger sizes have 2 zones. It comes with a 30 night trial and a 1 year warranty.

SizeRetail Price
Twin$859
Twin XL$889

California King$1,649
Split King$1,699

My Perfectly Snug Mattress Topper Findings

At first, I was a little skeptical about this topper, especially given the price. I have reviewed the Eight Sleep Pod system and the Chilipad which are used to cool your mattress with water and they work well but they do require some maintenance where you have to change out the water periodically and clean the tubing. Something similar to this is the Bedjet which blows air underneath your sheets from the foot of the bed but it doesn’t make the bed all that cozy. With this topper, you get a low-maintenance solution that is easy to use and still feels cozy.

As you can see from the picture below, I don’t sink into this topper all that much. The topper is on a memory foam mattress that is a medium firm.

Here’s another picture of me on my side.

perfectly snug topper side sleeping

This topper was designed to have air gently flow throughout the top and so having a mesh top is essential. But that also means that it’s not really compatible with a mattress protector because a mattress protector that is waterproof is not breathable either. So, to get the maximum benefit, it’s best to put your sheets directly on the topper.

topper cover

I slept on this topper for a week with my wife and we both really enjoyed calibrating the settings to get the optimal temperature at night. We used it in August when temperatures in the evening were still around 75 degrees. Rather than turning up the air conditioner to cool the whole house, we were able to turn it down a bit and turn up the fan on the mattress topper. I found myself turning down the setting on the topper during the early morning hours because it was a little too cool. But once you know what your preference will be, you can program that into their app.

An additional benefit to this topper is that it also can heat up your mattress or even just heat up the foot of the bed which is where you will need it most. This makes the topper a great solution year round.

My Perfectly Snug Topper Recommendation

There are all kinds of products out there right now that claim to keep you cool while you sleep but the Perfectly Snug Topper does it in the simplest way by circulating fresh air under your sheets. With this topper you no longer have to wake up sweaty and I found myself switching positions a lot less frequently at night. While it is a big investment, it is a solution that will keep you at an optimal temperature in a way no other technology on the market can.

Viscosoft is a Charlotte, NC based sleep company that was started in 2007  in addition to mattress toppers they also sell mattresses, pillows and bedding. They recently launched a new mattress topper that isn’t your typical run of the mill piece of foam. This mattress topper can completely transform your bed without having to buy a new mattress. Assuming your mattress is structurally sound and free of any significant impressions that may affect support, this topper will provide amazing pressure relief without feeling like you are sleeping directly on foam.

Ordering the Viscosoft Serene Foam Topper

I recommend ordering your topper directly through Viscosoft instead of Amazon. If you order from Viscosoft you are covered by their 60-day free return. That means you get to try if for 60 days to make sure it is the right feel. If you don’t like it you get a free return. Amazon only has a 30 day trial period and you need to pay for return shipping.

My Viscosoft Serene Foam Topper Findings

This is a 4 inch foam topper with a relatively dense foam, meaning it will contour better, provide better pressure relief and last longer than a lighter, less dense foam. The cover is a quilted down alternative cover with straps.

Viscosoft topper box

Here’s what it looks like when you open the box. At the top is the pad for the topper.

Here you can see both the topper and the pad together in their packaging. I was impressed by how compact they can compress a queen size topper.

viscosoft topper set

The first step in setting up your topper is to unroll the foam. Since it is compressed it will take some time for it to expand.

opened topper

I waited for about 45 minutes for the foam to fully expand and here’s what it looks like now.

viscosoft expanded topper

The next step is to add the pad. What I like about the pad is that there are straps on the corners to hold the bad and the topper in place on your mattress.

My Viscosoft Topper Recommendation

While the Serene Foam Hybrid mattress topper isn’t the cheapest topper out there, it is one of the best when it comes to quality and feel. The At 4 inches it is substantial enough to make a real difference in how your mattress will feel. I especially recommend this to people who want to make their mattress considerably softer. The included pad makes it so you don’t sink into the foam too much and does help a little with breathability. Although it is a polyfill pad, it is much better than just having your sheets between you and the foam. It also makes it easier to move around on the topper.

As you can see from the photos, I use this topper in our guestroom pullout couch. I replaced the original spring mattress in the couch with a foam mattress designed for couches but it is still fairly thin and doesn’t provide as much pressure relief as I or my guests would like. Adding this 4 inch topper with pad makes this couch bed a legitimate bed that can be slept of for long periods of time with no complaint.

Allswell made a splash with extremely affordable mattresses and bedding. They now offer innovative mattress toppers at a great price. The lineup includes a 3′ graphite infused topper and a 3″ and 4″ graphite and copper gel topper. A mattress topper is an affordable way to make a firm mattress softer. If your mattress sags, you probably need a new mattress but if the problem is firmness, these toppers are the way to go. They also come with a 30-night trial which gives you time to know for sure if they are solving the problems with your mattress.

Overview of the Allswell Mattress Toppers

These mattress toppers are available exclusively on their website. You can even opt for 2-day shipping to get it extra fast. It will arrive in a box and come wrapped in plastic. As you can see below it is super compact but comes to life quickly and is ready to sleep on in a few hours.

allswell wrapped mattress

The video below is an overview of the 3″ graphite infused topper. This is their most affordable option and is best for people looking to make their mattress softer while not compromising any support.

This video explains the benefits of the 4″ graphite and copper gel topper. It is ideal for side sleepers who want optimal pressure relief.

Allswell Mattress Topper Construction

A mattress topper is basically an extra layer of your mattress so whatever issues are underneath it will still exist. I only recommend a topper if your original mattress is just too firm. Mattress toppers have a tendency to trap more heat than your mattress but Allswell has incorporated graphite into their foam to mitigate this. Basically, graphite is highly conductive and draws heat away faster than a traditional topper.

The 4″ Cool Touch topper adds in a copper gel material. Copper is also conductive and has antimicrobial properties. The top layer of this mattress has phase change material which is cool to the touch. You will see a white stripe across the middle of the topper where the effect is strongest and where your body will likely need it the most. Keep in mind that the more layers you put over the topper, the less noticeable the effect.

In the picture below you can see the white stripe in the middle of the topper which is the coolest part.

Why Should You Get an Allswell Mattress Topper?

I have found that as I age, I become more particular about my mattress. As a kid, I could sleep on just about anything, anywhere. Now, if my mattress isn’t calibrated to a specific firmness, I just don’t get quality sleep. Mattress toppers are an economical way to address pressure point issues. They are also much more compact than a mattress and easier to return. Mattress topper technology has evolved along with mattress technology by offering you the latest cooling and comfort materials so adding a topper is going to be an upgrade.

Considering a typical online foam mattress is 10 inches thick and retails for around $800 in a queen size, a 3″ queen size topper for $109 is a lot more mattress for the money. You also need to consider that the base layer in foam mattresses is a support layer so again, if your support layer on your existing mattress is sound, you are getting a lot for your money.

My Allswell Mattress Topper Recommendation

If you wake up with a sore back, that may be a structural issue with your mattress and you should consider buying a new mattress with proper support. If your mattress is still in good shape, adding a topper is the way to go. For most people, a 3″ topper will do the trick but if you are a side sleeper and tend to sleep hot, definitely go with the 4″ cool touch option. Allswell is making a name for itself by becoming a value leader with mattresses and they do the same with this strong lineup of mattress toppers.

Zinus swirl gel mattress topper

I bought a Zinus Swirl Gel Memory foam topper, 2 inch to see how it would affect my mattress. I put this topper on the new Zinus Cooling Gel Mattress,  12 inch. This mattress is a medium firm feel as listed on their website but I found it to be a little too firm so adding one of their toppers might be a good solution.

You can buy the Zinus Swirl Gel memory foam topper direct from Amazon. It is currently selling for $54.99.

Here are some of the highlights of the topper:

  • 2 inches of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • Air flow pattern for cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

You can also buy this Zinus topper in the following sizes.

1.5″ $39.99
2″ $54.99
3″ $69.99
4″ $109.99

Notice that if you go up to a 4″ the construction changes. Here are the construction details of the 4″ mattress.

  • 1 inch of cool gel memory foam for ideal sleeping comfort
  • 3 inches of air flow high density support foam provides cool support
  • Green tea extract and castor natural plant oil naturally eliminate odor-causing bacteria
  • Only the highest Quality memory foam – memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and Content
  • Worry Free 5 year limited Warranty

The construction needs to be different or at least should be different on a thicker topper because if you don’t have a dense foam support base, you will lose alignment and sink into the topper too much.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Findings

As always, Amazon will deliver your mattress topper lightning fast since it is Amazon prime eligible. I received mine in 2 days and it arrived in a compact box. Note that the topper was not shrink wrapped but it was wrapped. That may be different with the 4 inch topper though.

Here’s what the topper looks like on my bed.

Here’s another shot but closer up so that you can see more of the peak and valley construction.

Zinus Swirl foam topper

Below is a video that shows how the topper reacts. It recovers fairly quickly.

My Zinus Mattress Topper Recommendation

Mattress toppers are good if your mattress is structurally sound underneath. A mattress topper cannot solve issues with a sagging mattress or a mattress that just doesn’t give you proper support. What it can do though is soften it up a bit to make it more comfortable and to extend the life of your existing mattress.

I particularly like this 2 inch topper because it softened my mattress just a bit more. If you go too thick such as a 4 inch topper you can either make it too soft or lose some of the support that your mattresses was designed for. I think the sweet spot for mattress topper thickness is between 2-3 inches. Going less than 2 inches really doesn’t do much unless you are a really light person.

The box for this 2 inch topper from Zinus was small enough where if I wanted to return it, it would be fairly easy to do and since the topper didn’t come shrink-wrapped it would be easy enough to get back in the box, unlike compressed mattress or topper.

In conclusion, if you have a mattress that still gives you proper support but you are just looking to make it a bit softer, definitely check out the Zinus Swirl Gel Foam topper. The peak and valley construction allows for more breathability and feels great!

Langria Mattress Topper Review

The Langria mattress topper can give your old mattress a significant upgrade. This mattress topper is made with bamboo charcoal which makes it anti-bacterial and mildew proof. A queen size can be purchased on Amazon for $89.99.

As you can see it comes fairly compact out of the box.

mattress topper

Here’s what it looks like a day after I took it out of the packaging.

langria topper on bed

Specifications

  • BAMBOO CHARCOAL: the topper is infused with bamboo charcoal, which is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, mildew-proof and absorbs odors and excess of moisture
  • MOLD YOUR BODY SHAPE: the mattress topper it conforms to your body to relieve pressure points and to promote health spinal alignment and a better sleeping position
  • EXTRA COMFORT: improve the quality of your sleep or your guests’ by simply adding 2 extra inches of this bamboo charcoal memory foam mattress topper; moreover, it can be easily rolled up and stored when not in use
  • ECO-FRIENDLY: this product is CertiPUR-US tested and certified for safe materials, environmental guidelines and performance; it’s free from harmful chemicals with less than 0.5 parts per million VOC emission
  • PACKAGE: this memory foam mattress topper has been folded and compressed for convenience; after unwrapping, it may take up to 24 hours to return to its intended size

Findings

I recommend this mattress topper for people that want a very dense foam feel and don’t mind a slow recovery. The main advantage of this topper is that it is only 2 inches thick but can give you as good of pressure relief as toppers that are twice as thick. The trade off is a slow recovery and slow setting in period. If you tend to change positions a lot at night it will take some time for the mattress topper to adapt.

Below is a video of me squishing the topper to illustrate recovery. As you can see it slowly comes back into shape.

Below is a video illustrating heat retention on the Lagria. Again, because it is a dense foam it will retain more heat than other mattress toppers. To mitigate the heat retention, I recommend a mattress cover such as the Malouf Ice Tech cover that has a phase change material to keep you cool at night. A cover like this has stretch to it as well which gives you the full feel of the foam underneath.

Conclusion

Langria has created an affordable mattress topper that gives great pressure relief with a height of just 2 inches. The charcoal infused foam helps keep your bed fresh. If you have a mattress that still has good support but is just too firm, this would be an excellent choice. If you have a mattress that sags or has divots, I recommend getting a new mattress all together.

The Modway Relax mattress topper is a 2 inch gel memory foam pad with a bamboo fabric cover that keeps the topper clean and in place on your mattress. It is sold exclusively through Amazon and is one of the best priced mattress toppers with a cover.

Overview

This topper comes in a neat package that you unzip to open.

modway mattress topper

Here’s a video overview of the topper. I am sitting on the Modway Elysse memory foam and pocket coil mattress.

The topper is sold through Amazon. It is not prime eligible but is in stock and comes with free shipping. So once you place the order it should arrive in about a week instead of 2 days.

Construction

Here is the construction of the topper according to the Amazon listing:

  • Softness and cooling relief
  • Positions under Fitted sheets
  • 2” gel-infused memory foam
  • Memory foam CertiPUR-US Certified
  • 40% bamboo / 60% polyester cover
  • Weight, 18 lbs.

Findings

Here’s a look inside the topper to see how it is constructed. It is basically 2 inches of gel foam with a blended bamboo cover.

modway mattress topper

Most mattress toppers are simply a piece of cut foam. I appreciate that Modway has included a cover that is already zipped over the the topper. This serves a few functions. It keeps the memory foam clean and you can wash the cover. It also helps keep the topper in place on the mattress. In the picture below you can see little studs that help to grip the mattress:

topper gripper

Here is a video showing heat dissipation from the topper:

This is ready to sleep on almost immediately. I would give it about 3 or 4 hours though to expand fully. Here’s a picture of the topper on the mattress right out of the box. The foam is fully expanded but as you can see the cover is still a little wrinkly. That won’t affect performance but I prefer to just air it out a big before I put a mattress protector and/or sheets on it.

mattress topper

Conclusion

The Modway mattress topper is a good deal. There’s a similar topper from Millard for $103.99 for a queen while the Modway comes in at $87.50. At 2 inches thick, I would recommend this for people looking for a slight increase in pressure relief and cushioning. If your mattress is hard to begin with and you want to transform the feel, I strongly recommend getting a new mattress. The Modway Aveline mattress retails for $227.82 for a queen! While I don’t recommend the Aveline for people over 200 lbs., it is still an awesome deal and may be a better choice than a mattress topper.
