The Citizenry is known for its simple and elegant textiles that will seamlessly work in just about any room. I received a free set of their linen sheets for review. They work with local artisans around the globe who are paid fairly and bring those goods directly to consumers at a fair price. The Citizenry had just about everything you need to outfit your house and give it a unique style. Their linen sheets are made in Portugal and feel great.

Construction of Citizenry Linen Sheets

Below are the construction specifications from their website. With linen sheets thread count really doesn’t matter as they are deigned to be loosely woven and breathable.

  • MEASUREMENTS:
    Full – Fitted Sheet (75”L x 54”W x 15”D), Flat Sheet (98”L x 86”W), Standard Pillowcases (20”L x 27”W)
    Queen – Fitted Sheet (80”L x 60”W x 15”D), Flat Sheet (104”L x 92”W), Standard Pillowcases (20”L x 27”W)
    King – Fitted Sheet (80”L x 76”W x 15”D), Flat Sheet (110”L x 104”W), King Pillowcases (20”L x 37”W)
NOTE: Our fitted sheets are a roomy 15″ deep so they work with any mattress depth. If your mattress is shorter than standard, you may have a looser fit.
  • MATERIALS: 100% French flax
  • COLORS: Available in graphite stripe, slate blue, sand stripe, white, charcoal, light grey, olive, and blush
  • ORIGIN: Portugal

How Much Do Citizenry Linen Sheets Cost?

Below is the pricing for the bundle set. As of this writing, they don’t have twin, twin xl, or cal king sizes.

Full$435
Queen$435
King$495

Unboxing the Citizenry Sheets

Unboxing these sheets was really fun. They put a lot of thought into the package design and while that won’t matter once the sheets are on your bed, it does show that they put a lot of thought into all aspects of the business.

citizenry box

Here’s a look at the inside of the box. The sheets are wrapped in paper.

You also get a card with an overview of the company.

citizenry envelope

citizenry pamphlet

The sheets are also in plastic bags to keep them clean if your package were to get wet somehow.

citizenry packaging

My Citizenry Linen Findings

As you can see the sheet set and duvet cover are self packaged. That means the bags are made of the same material as the linen sheets. I received the bundle which includes a total of 4 pillowcases. This is a really nice touch and something I haven’t found anywhere else. I typically have at least 4 pillows on my bed and this saves me the hassle of having to buy extra pillowcases. Sometimes companies don’t even have the option to buy separates. It is nice knowing that when the package arrives, I have everything to make my bed.

citizenry self packaging

Below is a photo of the stitching on the top sheet. It’s not too extravagant but enough to give it an elegant look.

citizenry flat sheet

Here you can see that the weave is a loose weave which is what you should expect from linen. It’s a great material for the summer. Or year-round if you live in a warmer climate.

citizenry stitching

Below is The Citizenry logo which is on both the fitted an flat sheet.

citizenry label

As you can see it is French Linen, made in Portugal.

citizenry back of label

The pillowcases are envelope pillowcases which means that the pillow is completely covered by the pillowcase and won’t come out. In this set you get 4 standard size pillowcases and they fit my queen pillows just fine.

citizenry pillow case

Here’s a picture of my queen size pillow in the pillowcase.

pillowcase

The duvet cover is also very simple and comes in its own packaging.

duvet cover

The buttons are clear and go inside the duvet cover so you don’t see them.

duvet cover buttons

The duvet cover has ties on all four corners which is my preferred method of attaching a duvet insert. I find that magnets and clips usually come loose.

My Citizenry Recommendation

While these sheets aren’t cheap, they are a worthwhile investment. Linen will last a very long time, much longer than cotton sheets so they are a good investment. These sheets have a 30 day return policy but they must be unused so you really need to be sure that you like the feel of linen before putting them on your bed. According to The Citizenry, you need to return them in their original packaging including protective packaging.

These sheets will feel great after the first was and continue to have that cozy yet breathable feel that only linen can provide after years of use. I think the bundle set is a good deal given you get the extra pillowcases and duvet cover. You also have different colors to choose from but I am partial to white because it gives your bedroom a clean look and it is easier to clean.

I received a gray-blue linen duvet set from MagicLinen in Lithuania to review. Unlike the sheets from PeachSkin and Homestead, MagicLinen did not impress me in the presentation department. The presentation was definitely reserved and modest—the sheets were neatly folded in a small package wrapped in ribbon donning the MagicLinen logo, but that was mailed in just a regular brown box.

Obviously, presentation isn’t everything, so I definitely don’t put too much weight in that, especially since it had to travel so far. MagicLinen is a small, family-run company in Vilnius, Lithuania that makes high-quality linen, so it’s really impressive that they are able to mail their products internationally for only $15.

MagicLinen Construction

MagicLinen’s high-quality linen products are made from fibers of the European flax plant that have been stone-washed for maximum comfort. This durable textile is breathable and cool during the summer, yet warm and comfortable during the winter. Linen absorbs moisture well and releases it quickly, drying out fast.

I had heard that linen can be scratchy and irritating to sensitive skin, but upon reading more on the subject, I learned that linen actually possesses rare hypoallergenic and anti-microbial properties—it’s a natural antiseptic that kills bacteria and fungi. Amazingly, it can reduce inflammation and cure some skin diseases—from common rashes to eczema.

Right out of the box, the duvet cover and pillowcases felt distinctly different from other fabrics that I’ve tried in the past, but they were definitely not scratchy. The tail end of the duvet cover sported attractive wooden buttons, and the head end had handy tie-ins to keep the duvet in place (some don’t have them).

The instructions told me to turn all three pieces inside-out before throwing them into a cold wash followed by a gentle low heat drying cycle. Coming out of the dryer, however, they were wrinkly which is to be expected of linen.

My MagicLinen Findings

Even after putting them on my bed and pillows, they remained wrinkly. However, I absolutely do not care because when I laid down on my bed waiting for the rest of my laundry dry, I felt like I was on a wistful beach getaway on the Nantucket coast basking in the sunny seabreeze. Eventually, the wrinkles do relax and if you really care about that sort of thing you can certainly iron them.

My house does not have a view of the ocean nor do I live on Nantucket but for some reason these sheets evoked pure relaxation on a luxurious summer vacation. Lounging on my bed, binge-watching “New Girl,” the duvet cover was warmer yet airier than the ice cold duvet that I’m used to. Curling up with the linen cover tucked under one half of my head, and a linen pillow case under the other became a kind of highlight to my evening. Sometimes it’s hard for me to fall asleep, but for the past week I have had no trouble at all.

I combined my MagicLinen bedding with my Homestead cotton sheets for a dynamic duo of solid Zzzs. It was a really nice change of pace from the sweaty and balmy experience I had in the PeachSkin sheets. I thankfully did not wake up in the middle of the night, grasping for my fan, and kicking off my duvet cover; I think I have fallen in love.

My MagicLinen Recommendation

With a price tag of $206, it’s similar to the Homestead sheets in that it is, unfortunately, a bit inaccessible. Online, you can find good quality 3-piece linen duvet sets anywhere from $40 to $110, but none of them are going to be like MagicLinen.

MagicLinen prides itself on being a descendant of Baltic linen growing, sewing, and weaving traditions spanning hundreds of years. Centuries of tradition and advancement in textile work has brought MagicLinen to the forefront of eco-friendly linen products. They use only European OEKO-tex certified, high-quality linen when they hand make all of their products. The fabric is cut and sewn by tailors rather than machines or children, making their supply chain more ethical than most of those cheaper brands.

So if you find yourself wishing you could enjoy a dreamy sleep-cation reminiscent of every perfect beach house stock photo you’ve ever lived vicariously through, I can honestly say that this is a duvet set to splurge on. I would love to try the sheets one day, because I have a feeling they will be just as magnificent.

I received a set of limited edition linen sheets from Brooklinen and am really impressed with not only the feel but the great pattern which is perfect for your summer bedroom. I have previously reviewed the cotton sheets from Brooklinen which are great and their new linen sheets live up to the Brooklinen name.

Overview and Unboxing Brooklinen Linen Sheets

Brooklinen as a company has been around for over 5 years now and they have really taken the bedding world by storm. They were one of the first companies to have a distinct bedding brand that was born online. What makes them so enticing is their feel, price, look and customer service.

You can order their new linen sheets direct from their website. Your sheets should arrive in about a week after ordering.

As you can see they come in thier signature brown box.

Brooklinen Box

They are wrapped in wrapping paper to stay clean and also make for a great pre-wrapped gift.

Brooklinen unboxing

Here’s a video of me unboxing the linen sheets.

These linen sheets are made of Belgian and French flax and stonewashed in Portugal. Stonewashing is used to accelerate the softening process of the linen and give it more of a lived in feel, similar to what is done with most jeans. This means they are going to feel great right out of the box.

Here’s what you get with the Linen Hardcore Sheet Bundle which currently retails for $382.50:

  • Includes a Flat Sheet, Fitted Sheet, Duvet Cover, and four Pillowcases
  • Woven in Portugal with Belgian Flax
  • Stonewashed for an immediately lived-in feel
  • Oeko-Tex® certified to be free of harmful chemicals
  • Fits mattresses up to 12″ depth
  • King and Cal King Core Sets come with king pillowcases
  • Duvet Cover Sets come with 1 duvet cover + 2 matching pillowcases

Below are the dimensions of the linen sheets:

Product Duvet Cover Fitted Sheet Flat Sheet Pillowcases
Twin 64″ × 90″ 39″ × 75″ × 15″ 71″ × 98″ 20″ × 27″
Twin XL 64″ × 90″ 39″ × 80″ × 15″ 71″ × 104″ 20″ × 27″
Full 90″ × 90″ 54″ × 75″ × 15″ 86″ × 98″ 20″ × 27″
Queen 90″ × 90″ 60″ × 80″ × 15″ 92″ × 104″ 20″ × 27″
King 106″ × 90″ 78″ × 80″ × 15″ 110″ × 104″ 20″ × 37″
Cal King 106″ × 90″ 72″ × 84″ × 15″ 110″ × 104″ 20″ × 37″

My Brooklinen Linen Sheets Findings

I found these sheets to be light and airy. As you can see from the picture below, linens have a very loose weave which gives you great breathability.

brooklinen weave

Here’s another picture of the duvet cover where you can see the buttons at the bottom.

Brooklinen Linen Duvet Cover

Below is a picture of the top sheet. Linens aren’t supposed to look or feel crisp. They look and feel relaxed. That’s what makes them so perfect for summer. No need to iron them just toss them on your bed out of the dryer and you’re ready to go.

Brooklinen Linen Top Sheet

My Brooklinen Linen Recommendation

There are all sorts of linen sheets you can choose from. Pottery Barn is known for its linen sheets but when you do the math, Brooklinen still comes out ahead. As of this writing, I found a Pottery Barn queen-size linen sheet set retailing for $174. You get a fitted sheet a flat sheet and two pillowcases. Their queen-size linen duvet cover is selling for $249. Together this adds up to $423.

Compare that to the Brooklinen Bundle where you can get a King size bundle that includes 2 extra pillowcases for $382.

With Brooklinen you also get a 60 night free trial period where if you don’t like them you can return them. Washed or used linens will be subject to a $9.99 processing fee.

Although other companies like Pottery Barn and The Company Store sell linen sheets. They just don’t offer some of the syles that Brooklinen has. These sheets will appeal to both men and women. They don’t have overly intricate patterns but also hold some interest to make your bedroom inviting and modern looking.

Linen Sheets from Parachute Home

Today is officially the first day of Spring which means it’s time to break out the linen sheets. Thankfully, I received a free set of linen sheets from Parachute Home to review. I have heard a lot about their linens and was excited that they arrived in time. A queen size linen sheet set retails for $169 which gives you a fitted sheet and two pillow cases. Note that you do not get a top sheet but can add one for an additional $90 to bringing the total price to $268. The reason they do not include a top sheet is that they really aren’t needed and they make your bed harder to make. It’s also the European way of making a bed. Instead, the idea is that you would just use a linen duvet cover to get the full linen feel from top to bottom.

Overview of the Parachute Linen Sheets

I reviewed the Parachute percale weave sheets about a year ago and they are still holding up nicely. I really like the self-packaging from Parachute in that you can reuse the bags the sheets come in to store toys or other trinkets.

You can order the sheets direct from their site and after you order your sheets they should arrive in about a week. Checkout is easy and fast. Before receiving these sheets I bought some of their laundry detergent which makes your bed smell amazing. Not too powerful of a scent, just a nice clean, natural smell that really freshens up your room.

Here’s a video of me unboxing the sheets, you can see how the sheets are packaged. I really like the fog color I received. Very neutral and relaxed.

Construction of the Parachute Linen Sheets

Here are the construction details of the Parachute linen sheets according to their website.

  • Garment dyed and washed in small batches, so color will be unique to each piece
  • Made in Portugal, by the world’s best artisans
  • Oeko-Tex certified. A certification system for textile producers that tests for harmful substances and chemicals. Learn more on the Blog.

  • Machine washable
  • Continuous hem
  • Accommodates mattresses up to 16 inches deep.

My Parachute Linen Findings

As advertised, these sheets are very breathable and have that one of a kind linen feel. Linen is a thicker and more durable material than a typical cotton sheet. You can expect these sheets to last many years so they are a worthwhile investment.

Parachute does a wonderful job with packaging. The sheets will come in a cardboard box with the Parachute logo on it and then when you open the box you will find your linen sheets in a package like the one below.

Parachute Linen Sheets Review

You also get a nice welcome card like the one below. It’s a nice touch that includes care instructions.

Parachute Sheets Review

The linen fabric is milled in the Guimarães region in northern Portugal. This area has a long history of making linens. In fact, they even have a linen parade, the Cortejo do Linho which is held in August.

Linen Festival

So how do these linen sheets feel? They are breathable and crisp just like they shoudl be. I enjoy linen because you can get cozy in linen without overheating. Even on hot summer nights I like to have something over me and linen is one of the few fabrics that is breathable enough to keep me comfortable.

Linen is sort of like a good baseball glove, it gets better the more you use it and it requires a bit of  a break in period. I would give it about 3 or 4 washes to start to get some of the true feel.

Does linen shrink? Linen shrinks about the same amount as cotton which is around 5 percent but can go beyond that. However since these sheets can accommodate up to a 16 inch deep mattress, even a shrinkage well above 5 percent won’t be a problem.

Parachute has a 60 day return policy so if you aren’t happy with these linen sheets, you can return them for a refund. Just note that they do have a few stipulations on what can and cannot be returned. Here’s a snippet from their FAQ regarding returns.

The following items cannot be returned:

  • Individual items that were purchased as part of a Venice Set or Sheet Set.
  • Bath or Decor items that have been used, washed or removed from original packaging.
  • Items that have not been postmarked within the 60 day window.
  • Items purchased at a Parachute Sample Sale.
  • Free gifts or promotional items with retail value.
  • Gift Card Sets or Digital Gift Cards.
  • Donations to Nothing But Nets.
  • Fabric swatches.

My Parachute Recommendation

If you haven’t tried linen bed sheets, Parachute is a great place to start.  Not only do their products feel great, they also have a great aesthetic. Parachute exudes a relaxed west coast beach vibe. Since they are headquartered a few block from Venice Beach in Los Angeles, it’s only fitting.

Smart Bedding Sheets Review

I received a free set of Smart Bedding sheets for review. Smart Bedding is a new startup that is offering french linen sheets at an affordable price by going direct to consumer. In addition they added a new twist to how to make your bed. They created buttons where you can snap the top sheet to the duvet cover so that it won’t end up getting scrunched up over night. In the morning, making your bed is as easy as spreading out the duvet cover since the top sheet is already attached.

Ordering and Unboxing

You can purchase the Smart Bedding set direct from their website. Because of demand, some sizes may be out of stock. You also get a 100 night trial where if you don’t like these sheets for whatever reason you can return them for a full refund! Once you place your order your new sheets should arrive an about a week and arrive in a box like this:

Smart bedding box

Below is a video of me unboxing the linen sheets. As you can see they put a lot of care into how it was packaged.

Specifications

Linen is a very durable material and should last much longer than cotton. This in part justifies the higher price point. Linens are sometimes passed down through the generations as an heirloom because they are so durable.

Most flax from which linen is made is grown in France because it has the perfect climate for growing this type of crop. That’s why french and linen often go together. Smart Bedding sheets are no exception. Their linen is harvested in France.

The linen is then cut and sewn in Shenzhen China. On their site the have some more background information on the factory and why they went with that particular one. It’s nice to see that they are transparent about where the material comes from and where it is assembled.

Findings

I don’t have much experience with linen and before receiving these sheets, I had never slept on linen before. What I was most impressed with was the breathability of the fabric. This linen is stone washed to soften it up and it is fairly soft right out of the box but linen will get softer the more you wash it sort of like breaking in a pair of jeans.

Here’s what the product looks like out of the box. Notice that each piece comes in a nice linen bag. Something that you could reuse for all sorts of purposes.

linen bag

What makes Smart Bedding linen sheets particularly unique is the button system they have created. As you can see in the picture below, you can attach the top sheet directly to the duvet cover via a button that snaps.

Linen button

As you can see from the picture below, the linen sheet thread count is relatively low compared to cotton but that will also promote beathability. If you’re looking for crisp sheets you should look elsewhere but if you want a higher coziness factor, these are it.

linen sheet thread count

Conclusion

Sheets are an investment that can upgrade your sleep environment. Target or Walmart sheets will only get you so far in terms of comfort and quality. Since you will be spending at least 6 hours a night in bed every night of your life, consider how your current sheets feel and if you could do better. Linen sheets are definitely an investment because they can be passed down to family members and only get better with age. With the 100 night trial period it’s certainly worth giving linen a try to see if it’s the right feel for you.
