In the future, no one will have to sleep alone. And thanks to the Somnox Sleep Robot, the future is now. The Somnox Sleep Robot is a sleep aid designed to help you fall asleep faster. About 20% of the population suffers from some sort of sleep problem and Somnox has created a device that helps put you to sleep without the use of supplements or prescription medications. The device is designed to be hugged so that you sleep in the fetal position which helps with breathing and proper neck alignment. The Somnox mimics a slow breathing pattern for you to follow so that you naturally slow your breathing and fall asleep faster.

Overview of the Somnox Sleep Robot

The Somnox is made in the Netherlands and is backed by sound science and research. You can read their white paper here.  It was invented by 4 students at the Robotics Institute at Delft University of Technology. Since its invention, it has gone through multiple design iterations with added features such as white noise and an upgraded app.

Here’s a video of how it all works.

Ordering the Somnox

You can order the Somnox directly through their website. It should arrive in a few weeks and comes in a box like the one below.

Somnox Box

With this box you simply slide it out sideways and you will find your robot.

Somnox Slideout

The robot itself isn’t terribly big an is very easy to setup.

somnox in packaging

The first step is to cover it with the provided machine washable cover. I would advise washing the cover first before attaching. Once the cover is on, you can plug it in to charge. Mine came with some charge but its best to fully charge it before use. Once it is fully charged you can then sync it to the free app provided on Google Play or iTunes.

How Much Does the Somnox Cost?

The sleep robot retails for $599. It comes with a 30-night trial where if it doesn’t work for you, it’s a free return. If you decide to keep it, you are covered under a 2-year warranty. Yes, that’s a lot of money for a little robot but if you take prescription sleeping pills or supplements, this may be a great long term alternative that may actually save you money down the road.

My Somnox Findings

Once your Somnox is set up, you can give it a name and it even comes with its own birth certificate. Since you will be spending a lot of time with your robot, it helps to personalize it.

somnox birth certificate

I already use a white noise machine in my bedroom so using the white noise through the robot wasn’t necessary. My first night using the Somnox I decided not to take my typical sleep supplement which includes melatonin. I wanted to see if the Somnox would be able to at least work as good as an over the counter supplement.

I decided to try inputting my initial breathing rate then my target breathing rate the first night. It worked well and helped my drift off to sleep but I recommend using the adaptive breathing function which will automatically sync with your breath rate and gradually slow it down. At first, it can be hard to not focus on your breathing but eventually, I didn’t even think about it and made it a routine.

It takes about 45 minutes for the Somnox to put you to sleep and then after that it will turn off. No need to hold it throughout the night if you don’t want to. Falling asleep is usually not that hard for me but I often wake up around 3 am to use the bathroom and when I get back into bed, that’s when I start having thoughts that eventually ramp up and prevent me from falling back asleep. This is where I get the most value from Somnox. To restart robot, you just push the power button again and it will help control your breathing and get you back to sleep.

It common knowledge that by slowing our breathing in stressful situations we become more relaxed, less worried. The genius of Somnox is that it trains your body to do this whether you remember to or not. The Somnox Robot app also has a napping and relaxing mode that are designed to train you for controlled breathing along with calming music. It can even be used to help with meditation.

My Somnox Recommendation

The thought of taking a robot to bed with me every night sounded strange at first but after experiencing the benefits, I really understand why it’s such a novel invention. Given all the stressors and stimuli in modern life, it’s a lot to ask for our bodies to just turn it all of when we switch off the bedroom lights. Somnox is a way to bring our breathing and our bodies into a relaxed rhythm and help block out the world so that we can get our best sleep, naturally.

Smart Nora Review

There’s no way around it. Snoring is disrupting and downright annoying. There are plenty of products on the market to help with reducing these disturbances but the Smart Nora brings a simple solution to the problem—it just gently raises your head at the right moment.
The Smart Nora is a simple and comfortable snoring solution that uses no mouth guard or nose strips. It’s just an expanding insert you put inside of your pillow. Then, when the Bluetooth connected sensor (called the “Pebble”) hears you snoring it gently lifts your head using a nearly silent air pump. As your head is raised it stimulates your throat muscles and disrupts the snoring.
Here’s a video overview of the Smart Nora.

The Smart Nora is very nicely designed. The case and sensor are very sleek and blend seamlessly into your bedroom. I really like how simple it is. You just turn on the sensor and head to sleep. Setup is also super quick and easy. It comes with a simple piece of plastic you stick above your bed to hold the Pebble. It even has a command strip already applied.

The Smart Nora is one of the most comfortable stop snoring solutions out there. Since there are no mouth guards or nose strips you don’t even notice it until it starts moving. The movement is very subtle and slow. It’s designed to work silently and in the background to minimize disruptions to your sleep. The movement may wake you up while you’re getting used to the product. This is normal and within a week or so you should be back to sleeping soundly.

Customization of the Smart Nora

The Smart Nora allows for personalization by adjusting the sensor’s sensitivity levels. This allows you to customize the sound threshold at which the movement is triggered. It took me a bit of adjusting but I was able to dial it in and account for how noisy my bedroom is at night.

Charging & Battery Life

The battery life has been great. The base unit has a battery life of 24 hours while the pebble can last up to 7 days without charging. The case (with the pump inside) plugs directly into the wall. The Pebble charges via USB but you don’t need to worry about plugging it into the wall because the case contains a USB connection. So, you really only need one open outlet for the whole system.

The Smart Nora retails for $329.00 at They also offer a 30 night free trial. So, if you decide it’s not for you within 30 nights you can return it for a full refund, including shipping! You can’t go wrong with a guarantee like that.

My Smart Nora Recommendation

After using the device for a few days I’m super impressed. Overall, the Smart Nora is a very comfortable and well designed device. The movement is subtle and the pump makes hardly any noise at all. If you or your partner have a snoring issue, this is a super simple and comfortable product to try.

Eight Sleep has a mattress pad that will automatically track your sleep when you get into bed. This sleep tracker is the most advanced sleep tracker I have reviewed. It not only senses motion but will also track temperature and breathing. It can even warm up your bed ahead of time and integrates with other IOT (internet of things) devices.

The mattress cover comes in a very nice box with a magnetic closing lid.

eight box

The packaging is exquisite. It’s similar to opening a well wrapped gift. I love tech so this makes it extra fun.

eight box

You can also wash the cover by unzipping the top. This makes it super easy to clean since you don’t have to tuck tin in each time you wash it.

eight sleep cover

cover 2Connecting the cover is easy. It’s as simple as putting the mattress cover on the bed and then plugging in the adapter into an outlet and then to the side of the cover. There’s instructions inside that walk you through the whole process.

eight instructions

Here’s what it looks like setup on my bed. Note that the plugin needs to go on the upper left corner of the mattress where you see the circle.

eight mattress 3

The cover connects to power via the plug below. It plugs into the side panel so that it won’t interfere with your sleep surface.

Once everything is connected, you can then download the Eight Sleep app for your iphone or android device. Once the app is installed you then connect to the network signal that the mattress cover broadcasts and connect it to your home wireless network. The advantage of this over bluetooth is that now you can control your mattress cover anywhere you have an internet connection.

One of the coolest features is that this mattress cover integrates with the If This Then That site. This site let’s you create programs for many of your smart devices. An example would be you can tell your Nest thermostat to turn down the heat when your smart mattress detects you getting into bed. Someday I want it to turn on my coffee maker as soon as I get out of bed. I have a Philips Hue smart light bulb for my nightstand lamp. I could tell the lamp to turn off when I get into bed or turn on when I get out of bed. There are thousands of possibilities because of the internet integration.

Here’s a screen shot of the app interface from my iphone. It’s important to note that the sleep tracking will not be very accurate at first. That’s because the app needs time to learn about your general sleeping patterns. It will be able to detect if you are just sitting in bed reading or watching tv vs. actually trying to sleep.

The Eight Mattress Cover also allows 2 people to track their sleep simultaneously. So, both you and your spouse can get accurate sleep feedback without ever having to remember to log anything or turn on your device before going to bed. The mattress cover also can heat either side individually providing personalized comfort. I enjoyed being able to turn on my mattress pad as I drive home late at night knowing I will be able to crawl into a nice warm cozy bed.

eight app

I think the app will score your sleep lower than it actually is at first since it is still learning.

eight sleep score

Another feature is the ability to set an alarm. For instance you can have the mattress gradually warm up to gently wake you. It sure beats a loud alarm clock.

eight app

When you pull up your nightly sleep score, you will get more detailed information such as heart rate, temperature and number of tosses and turns. This is more sophisticated than many wearable devices and best of all you don’t have to sleep with a watch on. The Eight Sleep system will continue to be refined and add features which makes it very exciting. I never had a bed before that you can literally upgrade via wifi.

eight app detail

The Eight Sleep System is a great way to get some objective data on how you sleep. Once it is setup, it is effortless. While the mattress itself should appeal to most sleepers, there isn’t a one size fits all mattress. You can certainly find softer and firmer mattresses but if you are looking to upgrade to a memory foam mattress and are enticed by the idea of sleep tracking, this is an excellent choice.

Your Sleep Timeline shows you a complete overview of our sleep cycle, punctuated by key events from your night. Together, you’ll see how external disturbances — like a car alarm going off outside your window, for example — can affect how well you sleep.

Simply set your alarm, choose from one of 15 beautiful wake tones, and Sense will gently wake you while you’re in the lightest phase of sleep, up to 30 minutes before your set time.”

Video Review:

We have found the Sense sleep tracker system to be elegant in design and VERY easy to setup.  We installed the app on a Apple iPad. It took less that 5 minutes to do the bluetooth pairings and configure for WiFi.

As part of the setup, the app asks you to create an account and enter your age, height, weight and gender. And in order to better optimize the monitoring for you, from time to time it asks you questions such as whether you are a light sleeper or whether you like to sleep in a warm or cool room.

Sense Sleep Monitor in Bedroom
Sense Sleep Monitor Base and Sleep Pill

We like the fact that the “pill” motion sensor attaches to the pillow instead of being required to wear a tracking device on your person. But a word of caution… Be sure to remove the Sense sleep “pill” before washing the pillow case. As it is only the size of a quarter, it is easy to overlook and get thrown in with the wash. A replacement pill costs $49.

We do wish the USB power adapter was designed a little bit differently. If you plug it into some power strips, you might find that its shape prevents you from using the next socket over. This is a minor issue.

This is just an initial review of the Sense Sleep Monitor System.  We will be providing an update to this review once we have used it for a few nights.

We hope that the Hello Inc. Sense Sleep Tracker System makes sense to you as a tool to monitor your sleep and manage your bedroom environment. Please give us your thoughts and comments. If you already have a Sense System, let us know how it is working for you by posting to the comment section below.

Eight Sleep / Luna Sleep Review 1

Eight Sleep / Luna Sleep Review

Check out the updated Eight Sleep Mattress Review
The Eight Sleep mattress pad formerly known as the Luna Sleep is the world’s first mattress protector, climate controller AND sleep monitor!  I have reviewed other sleep monitors such as the Beddit and ResMed S+ which are both great at what they do but they also have their limitations. The Luna Sleep takes sleep monitoring to a whole new level.

The Luna is as easy to install as putting on a bed sheet. In fact, that’s basically what it is but the benefit is that it can monitor both you and your spouse while you sleep.

What sets is apart from every other sleep tracker on the market is that you can set the temperature for each side. You can also sync it with other smart home devices. So for instance if you set your temp down in the house at night for bed you can also have it control your Luna. A perfect use would be to lower the thermostat in the winter to save energy and simultaneously raise your bed temp a little on the Luna to keep you cozy.

The Luna can also function this way as an alarm so for instance it can get progressively warmer as you get closer to waking making it easier to get out of bed.

luna temp

Right now the Eight Sleep system is only available for pre-order and is set to ship in February of 2016.  If you are on the fence about a new sleep gadget such as the Beddit or ResMed S+ you may want to give this some serious consideration. At $250 for a King size Luna Sleep system it’s a much better value than the Beddit or ResMed alone.

Resmed S+ Review 1

Resmed S+ Review

The ResMed S+ is the latest sleep tracking device to hit the market. It is unique in that you don’t have to wear it or come into contact with it at all. Once it is setup you it will monitor your sleep all night.

Unboxing & Setup

Resmed box

The Resmed S+ is very easy to setup. Before you even open the box, make sure you download and register the S+ App available for Android or Apple.  Once that is setup you can then unbox it and plug it in. As per the instructions, it should be positioned slightly higher than your mattress, so placing it on a nightstand is usually the perfect position. The box inside the stand that monitors your sleep is on a swivel so it can be tilted up or down to position it just right.

You’ll notice that when it is plugged in for the first time there’s an led indicator light that comes on. I was worried that this would stay on all night and disrupt my sleep but alas it does go away once your phone is paired correctly and you hit, “Sleep”.

I already own a Beddit and use it daily as it automatically starts tracking my sleep as soon as I get into bed. No need to remember to start it up. With the ResMed S+ I need to go into the app to tell it that I am ready to sleep. It’s not a huge hassle but on nights where I am really tired I can easily forget and that’s when its best to know how I slept.

The ResMed S+ app is really nice. It has a “Sleep Mentor” that gives you periodic sleep tips and asks you to get anything off your mind by recording a voice memo or writing it down in the app so you don’t have to worry about remembering.

When you register with the app, you are asked for your age, weight and other measures. The reason for this is that it will give you data to show how your sleep compares to people of a similar age and gender.

The tracking itself is very accurate, I did not expect that this device would be so sensitive to my movements. To test it out, you can view a motion chart in real time to see how it is tracking. Every little movement is tracked throughout the night.

Here’s a screenshot from my iPhone that shows what data the ResMed tracks.

data from resmed s plus

resmed data

resmed pie chart

From their website, here are the main features of the ResMEd S+

  • Measures your breathing and body movements throughout the night
  • Analyzes light, noise and temperature levels in your bedroom
  • Creates daily sleep scores and charts to help you understand your sleep pattern
  • Delivers personalized feedback based on your sleep pattern, bedroom environment and daily habits
  • Syncs seamlessly with your smartphone or tablet

By being able to track your breaths and motion the device has software that will determine your particular sleep state.

Another neat feature is that you can set an alarm to go off within a particular window of time and it will pick the best time to go off within that window depending on what state of sleep you are in. For instance, if you are still in deep sleep, it will wait until you reach light sleep to wake you, or at least wait as long as possible within that window of time that you set.

Since the ResMed S+ is a relatively new sleep tracking device as compared to the Beddit or wearable devices, I think there are more features on the horizon and that they are just getting started. Both the S+ and Beddit are way better than any wearable device. They can track your whole body movement and breaths which is essential for understanding how you sleep.

I would recommend of the ResMed S+ and Beddit. Each has their own advantages. I think the ResMed S+ does a better job of tracking your sleep state but the Beddit does not require you to start and end it each night which is something I can easily forget to do with the Resmed. This may change however with new software updates.

I like that the ResMed tracks your stages of sleep. The Beddit does something similar but doesn’t break it down into the categories that ResMed does.

The S+ now retails for only $50. Check out the Amazon Reviews to learn more.

If you are looking for an even more robust sleep tracker, check out my Eight Sleep Tracker review which is a smart mattress pad.

Beddit box

I finally have a Beddit! I have been waiting a while to do a Beddit review and I was not let down.  The Beddit is a sleep tracking tool that utilizes a thin tape that you put directly on your mattress, under your mattress cover to track your sleep.

 Unboxing the Beddit

The App

The Beddit app is available for Apple and Android devices for free. It is extremely easy to setup the Beddit. Just install the app, attach the Beddit to your mattress. It goes on just like tape, there’s a sticky side. Then plug it in and cover with your mattress protector and sheets.  Once installed, you open the app and it will find your Beddit via bluetooth. Before you go to sleep just click the button at the bottom, “start sleeping” and you’re all set. When you wake up you can then get your Beddit score. The first night using my Beddit I got a 92 which is way better than I thought I would get.

Beddit Screenshot

The advantage of the Beddit over other sleep tracking gadgets is that you don’t have to remember to wear it to bed. I used to use a Fitbit to track sleep but I found the band to be uncomfortable and it left impressions in my wrist from sleeping on my side. The Fitbit didn’t seem to do as good of a job tracking my motion at night since its primary function is a step tracker. The Beddit was designed to track just sleep and it does it well.

Bedding tape length

The Beddit gives you objective sleep information which is great when trying to figure out why you may feel fatigued or in a bad mood.

Aside from tracking sleep. The Beddit will also track your heart rate bpm. I started at 86 when I fell asleep and woke up at 58. Interesting because I had an energy drink around 4pm that kept me really wired. So maybe it started to wear down overnight.

Beddit BPM

The Beddit even tracks how many breaths per minute I took, 14.7. And when I fell asleep, how often I was restless and when I got up to go to the bathroom then finally when I woke up! This is a treasure trove of data that it will keep and let me track against over time. With regular use, I will be able to track which days I sleep best and even which  times of year I sleep best.

Beddit Sleep Monitor

You can get the Beddit from Amazon for $133. It Amazon Prime eligible which means free shipping and it should arrive in 2 days. The Beddit reviews on Amazon are mixed but I was sent the updated version which is a major improvement over the original Beddit so that skews the ratings.

I love my Beddit and look forward to finally having some useful, objective information on how well I sleep each night.
