Puffy Lux Mattress Review 2022 Update

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a side-sleepers dream. I was given a free queen-size Puffy Lux for review.  It is a super soft mattress that still provides good support and ultimate pressure relief. However luxury is not cheap. A queen size retails for $1,595 after discounts. This mattress is a 6 layer sleep system that seamlessly blends each layer for the ultimate in pressure relief

Ordering and Unboxing the Puffy Lux

The Puffy Lux is available exclusively on the Puffy website. Ordering is easy and your mattress will arrive quickly. Mine took about a week after the order was placed.  This mattress comes with a 101 night trial period so shipping is free and returns are also completely free if you return within the trial period. Your mattress will come shipped in a box like the one below.

Here’s a photo of what it looks like outside the box. Because it is roll packed it will take some time to decompress but not that long. It should be ready to sleep on within about 8 hours. You may notice some off-gassing beyond that time though so if you are sensitive to that, I would give it a full day to air out.

Overview of the Puffy Lux Mattress

Here’s a little video of the Puffy Lux in action. What you’ll notice is that compared to the original Puffy you will sink into this mattress even more.

Plush Dual Cloud Foam

1.5 inches of pressure-relieving cloud foam for minimal strain and maximum recovery.

Climate Comfort™ Foam

2 inches of humidity-resistant foam wicks away moisture for sleep that’s never stuffy.

Firm Core Support Foam + Contour-Adapt Coils

7 inches of high-density foam with a contour-adapt coil base to help stabilize your mattress with advanced edge support.

Grip Base Cover

Helps your mattress stay put as you toss and turn to your heart’s content.

What is the Puffy Lifetime Warranty?

I always advise people to read the fine print but here’s the warranty in a nutshell. I think having a 101 night trial period is more important since it will give you ample time to decide if this is a good fit and if not, it’s a free return within the trial period.

In the event that we in our sole discretion determine that your Defect is legitimate as per this Warranty, your choice in remedies will be:

  • During your first 10 years of owning your Puffy™, we will replace your bed with a brand new Puffy™ Mattress free of charge.
  • Beyond the first 10 years, Puffy™ will completely repair or replace your Puffy™ mattress. There may be a $50 shipping charge incurred each way. However, Puffy™ will waive all transportation charges if it is confirmed that a materials or manufacturing defect(s) is(are) present.
  • At your discretion, Puffy™ offers a “Quick Sleep” offer after the first 10 years of coverage. Should you choose this option you opt to keep your original Puffy™ foam mattress. Instead of us repairing/replacing your original defective mattress, we deliver you a brand new Puffy™ at half of the original price you paid.

My Puffy Lux Findings

Here’s a picture of how much my 14 lb. bowling ball sinks into the mattress. As you can see you get quite a bit of sinkage, even more sink than the original Puffy.

puffy mattress sink

In terms of motion transfer there basically isn’t any. It’s an all foam mattress with lots of foam so you won’t wake your partner at night. I don’t think you will be moving much anyway since this mattress is so good at pressure relief you will likely stay in the same position longer on this mattress.

Here’s a look inside the Puffy Lux to give you a better idea of how each layer reacts. The top layer which is the comfort layer is the slowest to relax but that’s because it needs to provide maximum contouring. The middle layer is a transition layer which has some contouring and some support benefits. The bottom layer or base layer is the support layer and provides a solid, consistent sleep surface.

My Puffy Lux Recommendation

While this mattress is a bit pricier than its competitors, I am very happy with how well it relieves pressure. Dedicated side sleepers will really appreciate this and especially if you have tried other soft mattresses that just don’t cut it. I can’t claim that this mattress is for everyone and that’s OK. The Puffy Lux was designed to address the most pressing needs of side sleepers which is shoulder and hip pressure relief and excellent contouring. If you are a side sleeper on the hunt for pain relief and aren’t happy with the alternatives, give the Puffy Lux a try.

Since the first Avocado Green Mattress debuted back in 2017 there have been new Avocado mattress models such as:

  • Avocado Green Mattress
  • Avocado Pillow Top Mattress
  • Avocado Eco Organic Mattress
  • Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress
  • Eco Organic Kids Mattress
  • Eco Organoc Crib Mattress
  • Organic Crib Mattress
  • Luxury Organic Crib Mattress
  • Avocado Vegan Mattress
  • Avocado Latex Mattress

Overview of the Avocado Mattress

This mattress received excellent ratings by Consumer Reports for the last 2 years. This is a very sought-after achievement.  The quality is definitely there.  You can choose to buy this mattress with or without the pillow top.

The video below is of the Avocado Green Mattress without the pillow top.

Here’s a quick video that explains the main features of the pillow top version of the Avocado mattress.

Construction of the Avocado Bed

Below are the construction details as listed on the Avocado Mattress website. The Avocado Mattress is basically a hybrid mattress in that it is primarily spring and latex. The most popular hybrid mattress construction is spring and foam.

Top Layer

The top layer consists of hand-tufted GOTS certified organic wool rosettes on top of an organic cotton cover. This tufting process makes the bed look amazing but also is used because you don’t need to use a glue to hold the pieces of the mattress together.

This also makes the Avocado mattress ideal for hot sleepers as the wool helps regulate temperature.

Middle layers

The pillow top consists of a 2-inch latex layer followed by another 2 inches of latex below that for a total of 4 inches of dunlop latex.

Base Layer

The base of the mattress features one of the most advanced, internal, pressure-point support units available made by Leggett & Platt — a Quantum Edge® Elite Combi-Zone®. The individually wrapped innersprings are arranged in 5 strategic zones, to support hips, back, and shoulders, plus a reinforced steel perimeter giving the bed a consistent level of support all the way to the edge so that you get proper support where you need it. And another 1-inch seamless layer of organic latex.

Avocado Green Mattress Certifications

Avocado is one of the greenest mattresses in the marketplace, hence the name, Avocado Green Mattress. Below are their certifications as listed on their website.

MADE SAFE® screens products for known harmful chemicals, bioaccumulation, persistence, and general and aquatic toxicity, including behavioral toxins, carcinogens, developmental toxins, endocrine disruptors, fire retardants, heavy metals, neurotoxins, high-risk pesticides, reproductive toxins, toxic solvents, and harmful VOCs. Our Avocado Green Mattress, organic mattress pad protectors, toppers and green pillows are certified under our brand name.

Formaldehyde Free by UL Environment

Formaldehyde, which is used to make one of the adhesives that hold mattresses together, is a VOC (a.k.a. off-gassing chemical that can linger for months) that has been linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers. The EPA considers it a probable human carcinogen. It does not belong in any mattress. For assurance, the entirety of our Avocado Green Mattress has been lab tested in environmental chambers and certified by UL Environment to be free from Formaldehyde.

Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It means they’re scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates.

eco-INSTITUT®

Our 100% GOLS organic certified natural latex is sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable latex sources in India. (FYI: Latex trees do not grow in the United States). Our latex is grown using only organic fertilizers. The finished latex is tested and certified for hazardous emissions by the eco-INSTITUT® — an international product testing and quality assurance company — by our provider, LIEN A. The eco-INSTITUT evaluates the latex for an extensive list of chemicals including: formaldehyde, VOCS (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals.

OEKO-TEX

Our organic certified latex, wool and cotton have received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications (19.0.79546, 19.HIN.68466 & 15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI). These are strict standards for human and ecological safety. It means they’ve been tested in a lab to be free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers, and are not harmful to the skin.

The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for textile products at all processing levels. Our wool provider, JOMA Wool of New Zealand, adheres to the strict OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification to ensure human and ecological safety. This certifies that our wool is free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin.

Free from harmful chemicals, organic cotton is better for your health and the people growing it. Organic cotton is also a more sustainable and ethical option, instead of conventional cotton. We’re proud that our cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cotton used in our ticking is sourced from our partner in South India, Bannari Amman Spinning Mills (fun fact: their facility is powered by windmills), then finished at our textile manufacturing processing center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

USDA ORGANIC – NATIONAL ORGANIC PROGRAM

Our natural materials — organic latex, wool and cotton — are GOTS and GOLS certified in our brand name. The factory we own in Los Angeles is also certified. And our finished products are certified. (Anything less makes no sense.) That’s why our license number is always listed under our GOTS and GOLS logos, as required. Of course, these stringent standards are fully endorsed by the USDA’s National Organic Program.

CLIMATE NEUTRAL

Net Zero Carbon Emissions: Climate Neutral is an independent non-profit organization working to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world by putting a price on carbon emissions. With Climate Neutral, the entirety of our carbon footprint is measured and verified, from raw material production and shipping to manufacturing and delivery. We reduce where we can, and purchase offsets for the balance. Avocado is the world’s first mattress brand to achieve net-zero carbon emissions — the new bar for all sustainable brands.

1% for the Planet® is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to address the most pressing issues facing our planet. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, member organizations have given more than $150 million to environmental nonprofits to date. As members of 1% for the Planet, we are fully committed to giving 1% of our corporate revenues to verified environmental nonprofits — to help protect the environment and give back to our global community.

GREEN BUSINESS STANDARDS
Green America® awards Green Business Certifications to companies and organizations that meet or exceed their standards for social and environmental responsibility. They certify companies that are committed to using business as a platform for social change, operating in a “value-based” and environmentally responsible manner.

The latex used is 100% natural, GOLS certified latex

The wool is 100% GOTS organic certified wool sourced from India

The coils also have a sustainable story in that they are made with recycled steel.

The cotton is 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.

ORGANIC TRADE ASSOCIATION

The mission of the Organic Trade Association is to promote and protect Organic with a unifying voice that serves and engages its diverse members from farm to marketplace. OTA’s vision is to grow Organic to achieve excellence in agriculture and commerce, protect the environment and enhance community well-being. We are proud to be new members and serve on the Fiber Council.

SUSTAINABLE FURNISHINGS COUNCIL

The Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) is a coalition of manufacturers, retailers and designers dedicated to raising awareness and expanding the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices across the home furnishings industry. As a SFC member, we support the triple bottom line of PEOPLE – PLANET – PROFITS to develop an awareness of best practices throughout supply chains.

CARBONFUND – OFFSETTING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

To offset 31,000 metric tons CO2e in 2018, we funded three large projects via Carbonfund to fight climate change: Deforestation Projects in the Brazilian Amazon, helping to protect the rainforest from slash and burn agriculture and cattle ranchers; the Aqua Clara Safe Drinking Water, reducing the need in Africa to burn unsustainable biomass in order to boil water; and the Burn Stoves Project, saving lives and forests by making the burning of charcoal in Kenya more efficient and safe.

DONEGOOD

DoneGood brands do good for people, animals, and the planet. They obsess over what makes it into their products, where those items are sourced, and how it impacts their customers, workers, and the world around them. And they believe in quality, fairness, and sustainability over profit. We are proud to be members of the DoneGood brand community.

MATERIALS

The Dunlop latex used is 100% GOLS organic certified. Avocado directly manages 4,000+ acres of FSC® certified latex rubber tree plantations. Our latex is processed by Avocado Organic Latex. Yes, we also jointly own our GOLS organic certified latex processing facility in Kerala, India.

The wool is 100% GOTS organic certified wool sourced from India.

The coils also have a sustainable story in that they are made with recycled steel.

The cotton is 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.

VEGAN

VEGAN CERTIFIED

Our Vegan Mattress and bedding products have been certified and verified by Vegan Action (The Vegan Awareness Foundation) in Richmond, Virginia, under our brand name. These products do not use wool and do not contain animal products or byproducts and that have been tested on animals. Instead of wool, a generous layer of 100% GOTS organic certified cotton batting is used.

PETA APPROVED

Our Vegan Mattress is also PETA-approved VEGAN products under our brand name — certified to be animal-free products (i.e., wool) that align with vegan values.

Avocado Bed With or Without Pillowtop?

If you’re trying to decide between the Avocado with or without the pillow top. Here’s a detailed explanation from Avocado about the differences between the two:

On our standard Avocado mattress, we use two seamless layers of Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft); and a denser 1-inch layer (D95, firm) as a core base component under the innerspring support coil unit.

On the Avocado Mattress with the optional Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex — 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), and a denser 1-inch layer (D95 / 36-38 ILD, firm) as a core base component. No blended or synthetic latex is used, and there are no seams to break down over time and no chemical adhesives are used between the comfort layers.

I prefer the Avocado Pillowtop over the regular Avocado. Heavy sleeprs have the luxury of choosing either option because the latex will support extra weight.  The same goes for stomach sleepers but I think stomach sleepers should go with the non-pillowtop option.

Combination sleepers are best suited for the Pillow top version of the Avocado mattress but if you can afford it, go with the Avocado Luxury Mattress.

The Avocado Vegan Mattress Option

If you want to go with the Vegan option of the mattress they just switch the wool for cotton. The Avocado Green Mattress consists of the following materials.

Our vegan mattress features 100% natural latex rubber, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils. No polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants. It’s exactly the same as our Avocado Green Mattress but uses cotton instead of wool.

There really isn’t much difference between feel between the Avocaodo wool vs Avocado Vegan mattress construction.

How Much Does the Avocado Mattress Cost?

The price of the Avocado Green Mattress depends on whether or not you go with or without the pillow top option. The price will be the same whether or not you choose the regular or vegan option. Prices constantly change so it’s best to check directly on their website.

Avocado mattresses are not cheap so they recently came out with the Avocado Eco option. Below is the cost of the Avocado Green Mattress by model in a queen size. The price range has widened recently with the availability of the eco options.

  • Avocado Green Mattress: $1,899 (Queen)
  • Avocado Pillow Top Mattress: $2,399 (Queen)
  • Avocado Eco Organic Mattress: $1,199 (Queen)
  • Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress: $3,899 (Queen)
  • Eco Organic Kids Mattress: $649 (Twin)
  • Eco Organic Crib Mattress: $439
  • Organic Crib Mattress$349
  • Luxury Organic Crib Mattress: $1,379
  • Avocado Vegan Mattress: $1,899
Avocado Vegan Pillowtop Mattress: $2,399 (Queen)
  • Avocado Latex Mattress:  $2999 (Queen)

Why Is the Avocado so Expensive?

The Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other mattresses on the market due to several factors related to the materials used, the manufacturing process, and the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Here are some reasons why the Avocado mattress may have a higher price point:

  1. High-quality materials: Avocado mattresses are made from eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool. These materials tend to be more expensive than synthetic alternatives, like memory foam or polyester.

  2. Certified materials: The company sources its materials from certified suppliers, ensuring that they meet strict environmental and social standards. For example, their latex is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified, and their cotton is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified. These certifications can add to the overall cost of the mattress.

  3. Manufacturing process: Avocado mattresses are handcrafted in the United States, which can contribute to higher labor and production costs compared to mattresses manufactured overseas.

  4. Durability and longevity: The natural materials used in Avocado mattresses tend to be more durable and longer-lasting than many synthetic alternatives, which can justify a higher initial investment.

  5. Commitment to sustainability: Avocado is committed to environmentally friendly practices, such as using recycled steel in their innerspring coils and reducing waste during manufacturing. These practices may increase production costs but contribute to a more sustainable product.

  6. Social responsibility: The company is dedicated to giving back through various initiatives, such as donating mattresses to those in need and supporting environmental causes. This commitment to social responsibility can influence the price of their products.

While the Avocado mattress may be more expensive than other options, many customers believe that the quality, durability, and eco-friendly materials used in its construction justify the higher price.

My Avocado Mattress Findings

The Avocado has a medium-firm feel. However because it is tufted, you get more of a true pillow top feel. With many latex mattresses, you get a flat feel with more or less sink depending on what type of latex is used. The tufting makes a significant difference here.

avocado mattress tufting

Here’s a video illustrating bounce on the Avocado mattress. It has quite a bit of bounce:

Another plus for this mattress is the edge support. Usually, all latex mattresses sink a little at the edge but because this mattress has a coil system as well, you get the benefit of added edge support so that you can use all of the mattresses and sleep right up to the edge without feeling like you will fall off.

avocado mattress edge support

Aside from the hand tufting, this mattress also has stitched handles that make it easy to rotate or transport.

avocado handles

Since the Avocado is made with latex and quality springs. According to Avocado, the weight limit is  350 lbs. per person, or 700 lbs. in total making it a good choice for heavy people.

Another common question is whether or not the Avocado Bed is Vegan. And, yes, you can get a vegan option for this mattress. The vegan option replaces the wool layer with cotton.

Avocado For Back and Stomach Sleepers

The Avocado without the pillowtop is best for back and side sleepers. Back and side sleepers should also take a look at the all latex Avocado mattress as that has a firmer feel and less give.

The Avocado Green Mattress Warranty

You can find detailed information on the Avocado Mattress on their website here. Avocado offers a 25-year warranty. Here are some of the high-level details of the warranty.

YEARS 1-10: FULL COVERAGE — NON-PRORATED

During the first ten (10) years of the Limited Warranty, Avocado Mattress will not charge purchaser to repair or replace purchaser’s mattress if it qualifies under the Limited Warranty. This period is non-prorated which means that we don’t charge you a percentage of the repair costs or replacement product based on the amount of time you slept on the mattress prior to noticing a defect.

YEARS 11-25: LIMITED COVERAGE — PRORATED

During years 11-25 of this 25-Year Limited Warranty Avocado Mattress will, at its option, replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the purchaser plus transportation and/or shipping charges. The prorated replacement charged will be dependent on the year that the mattress is replaced.

The Avocado Pillow

Avocado sells natural pillows made out of latex and kapok. These pillows have the same organic cotton cover as the mattress and can be adjusted to the perfect fit. Here’s a quick video overview of the Avocado Pillow.

My Avocado Mattress Recommendation

If you’re in the market for an all-natural mattress, the Avocado should be near to the top of your list. They have done a phenomenal job of blending traditional coils and tufting techniques along with natural latex, organic wool and organic cotton. Aside from the natural benefits this provides, it feels like a high-quality mattress. Latex is a very durable material and so you won’t have issues with depressions over time.

An emerging trend with natural mattresses is a free trial period. Avocado now has a 1-year night free trial period where if you don’t like it for whatever reason you can return it for a full refund. This really takes a trial to the next level and lets you try out an Avocado in all 4 seasons to know if it is truly right for you.  There are still many natural mattresses that don’t offer a free trial period and so it can be a gamble when buying online without trying first. Avocado takes away the anxiety of purchasing natural mattresses online.

Many people ask, does the Avocado Mattress work on an adjustable base? Yes, it does! Contrary to other reports, this mattress will work with an adjustable base.

In my Avocado Green Mattress review, I have used it for months on an adjustable base just fine.

Final Thoughts on the Avocado Green Mattress

The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best organic mattresses I have reviewed. It should outlast an all foam mattress because it is a durable mattress with durable materials. Average weight side sleepers will want to go with the Pillow top option or the Luxury Option. But don’t take my word for it, there are plenty of other mattress reviews that concur with my findings and were also please with how the Avocado mattress performed.

Does the Avocado Mattress Sag?

no mattress is immune to wear and tear over time. Factors such as usage, body weight, and maintenance can contribute to sagging in any mattress. To minimize sagging in an Avocado mattress or any other mattress, it’s important to:

  1. Rotate the mattress regularly: This can help distribute wear and tear more evenly across the surface, preventing the formation of body impressions.
  2. Use a supportive foundation: A proper foundation can provide the necessary support to prevent sagging. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the best foundation to use with your mattress.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight: Carrying excess body weight can put additional strain on a mattress, potentially causing it to sag prematurely.
  4. Replace the mattress when necessary: Over time, even the best mattresses will wear out and may need to be replaced. Most mattresses last for around 7-10 years, but this can vary based on factors such as usage and material quality.

Why Do Avocado Mattresses Smell?

Although Avocado mattresses use eco-friendly and natural materials, such as organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool, some odor may still be present when the mattress is new. However, the smell is generally less intense and less persistent than in synthetic foam mattresses, as the materials used in Avocado mattresses are considered to be low-VOC and more environmentally friendly.

To minimize any smell from a new Avocado mattress, you can:

  1. Allow the mattress to air out: Remove all packaging materials and let the mattress breathe in a well-ventilated room for a few hours or even a couple of days before using it. This will allow VOCs to disperse and the odor to dissipate.
  2. Use a mattress protector: A high-quality, breathable mattress protector can help minimize any lingering odors and protect your mattress from stains and allergens.
  3. Regularly clean and air your bedding: Washing your sheets and airing out your bedding regularly can help keep your sleeping environment fresh and minimize any odors.

The initial smell from a new Avocado mattress should dissipate within a few days to a couple of weeks. If the odor persists or seems unusually strong, you may want to contact the manufacturer for assistance.

Avocado Mattress Discount Codes

Avocado Mattress Alternatives

The Avocado Mattress isn’t cheap so it’s not a suprise that people are looking for less expensive alternatives to the Avocado without wanting to compromise on quality. Another option is the Harvest Green Mattress. The Harvest Mattress is made with the same materials, organic cotton, GOLS certified Latex and natural wool but is priced consierdably less all with a generous trial period and free returns. Avocado vs. Birch Mattress

Both the Avocado Green Mattress and the Birch Mattress are eco-friendly, high-quality options. Here’s a comparison to help you make an informed decision:

Avocado Green Mattress:

  1. List price (Queen size): $1,499
  2. Trial period: 365 nights
  3. Warranty: 25-year limited warranty
  4. Sleeping position:
    • Side sleepers: Good for most, with zoned support for pressure relief
    • Back sleepers: Offers excellent support for spinal alignment
    • Stomach sleepers: Provides sufficient firmness for proper support
  5. Weight: Suitable for all weight categories, but may be too firm for lightweight sleepers
  6. Age: Suitable for all ages, with a durable design that accommodates different life stages

Birch Mattress:

  1. List price (Queen size): $1,499
  2. Trial period: 100 nights
  3. Warranty: 25-year limited warranty
  4. Sleeping position:
    • Side sleepers: Good for most, but lightweight sleepers may find it too firm
    • Back sleepers: Offers excellent support for spinal alignment
    • Stomach sleepers: Provides enough firmness for proper support
  5. Weight: Suitable for all weight categories, but may be too firm for lightweight sleepers
  6. Age: Suitable for all ages, with a durable design that accommodates different life stages

Both mattresses are great for various sleeping positions, weights, and ages. However, the Avocado Green Mattress offers a longer trial period, which may be more appealing for those who want to test the mattress extensively before committing to a purchase. In terms of firmness, both mattresses may be too firm for some lightweight sleepers, so it’s essential to consider your personal preferences when choosing between the two.

Avocado vs. Awara: Which is More Organic?

Avocado Green Mattress and Awara Sleep Mattress are both eco-friendly options that use natural materials. To help you decide which one is better in terms of quality and certifications, let’s compare them:

Avocado Green Mattress:

  1. Quality: Made with GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, and GOTS-certified organic cotton. The mattress features a zoned support system, which is beneficial for spinal alignment and pressure relief.
  2. Certifications:
    • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)
    • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
    • GREENGUARD Gold certified
    • Made Safe certified
    • Formaldehyde-Free certified
    • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified

Awara Sleep Mattress:

  1. Quality: Made with natural Dunlop latex and organic wool and cotton. This mattress offers a good balance of comfort and support due to its hybrid design, combining latex with pocketed coils.
  2. Certifications:
    • Rainforest Alliance certified (for the Dunlop latex)
    • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for wool and cotton
    • CertiPUR-US certified (for the polyurethane foams used in the mattress)

Based on this comparison, the Avocado Green Mattress has more certifications and is made with GOLS-certified organic latex, which is considered a higher standard than the Rainforest Alliance certification for the Dunlop latex used in the Awara Sleep Mattress. Both mattresses use high-quality materials and offer great support, but the Avocado Green Mattress comes out on top in terms of certifications and overall quality.

Overview of the Winkbed Models

I recently received a free queen size Winkbed for review.  This new Winkbed model is a significant improvement on the previous model which was also a great mattress. This mattress is not delivered in a box and is a hybrid coil/foam mattress. Below is an overview of the company and the mattress.

WinkBeds is a US-based mattress company that offers a range of high-quality mattresses that are designed to provide a comfortable and supportive sleep experience. The company was founded in 2014 and has since gained a reputation for producing durable and reliable mattresses that are made from high-quality materials.

WinkBeds offers four different mattress models: the WinkBed, the WinkBed Plus, the EcoCloud, and the GravityLux. Each of these mattresses is designed with different types of sleepers in mind, so you can choose the one that best fits your specific needs.

The WinkBed is the company’s flagship mattress and is available in three different firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm. It features a hybrid design that combines foam and innerspring coils to provide a balance of comfort and support.

The WinkBed Plus is a firmer version of the WinkBed and is designed to provide extra support for heavier sleepers. It features a reinforced innerspring coil system and a layer of high-density foam for added support.

The EcoCloud is WinkBeds’ eco-friendly mattress, made with natural and organic materials. It features a layer of latex foam for added comfort and support, and is designed to be breathable and cool.

The GravityLux is WinkBeds’ memory foam mattress, which is designed to provide pressure relief and contouring support. It features multiple layers of high-density memory foam and a breathable cover to help regulate temperature.

Overall, WinkBeds offers a variety of mattresses to choose from, each designed to meet the needs of different sleepers. With their high-quality materials and attention to detail, WinkBeds mattresses are a popular choice for those looking for a comfortable and supportive sleeping experience.

You can order the Winkbed exclusively through their website. Winkbeds come with a 120-night trial where you can sleep on it in the comfort of your own home for 120 nights and if you aren’t happy with it, you can return it for a full refund.

Beyond that, they also offer a lifetime warranty and a 50% off lifetime replacement guarantee. This means that at any point after your trial period has expired, you can exchange the mattress for a different firmness at 50% off!

Below is a video overview of the WinkBed. As you can see it is a very substantial mattress that has a beautiful tufted top.

The Winkbed Mattress Company

WinkBeds has a similar mission to other mattress companies that I have reviewed in that they are looking to provide more value and less smoke and mirrors in the mattress industry. I spoke with one of the founders of Winkbeds and we both agreed that the bed in a box model of mattress sales is starting to get crowded. This is even truer than when we first spoke a few months back. That also means that there’s plenty of opportunities to disrupt the traditional spring mattress space.

Construction of the Winkbeds Mattress

Below are the sizes and weights of the medium firm WinkBed along with other detailed specifications.

What are the mattress dimensions and weights?
Twin: 14.5″ x 38″ x 75″ – 58 lbs
Twin XL: 14.5″ x 38″ x 80″ – 60 lbs
Full: 14.5″ x 54″ x 75″ – 70 lbs
Queen: 14.5″ x 60″ x 80″ – 79 lbs
King: 14.5″ x 76″ x 80″ – 93 lbs
California King : 14.5″ x 72″ x 84″ – 93 lbs

The WinkBed is fundamentally different from other e-commerce mattress brands because of its unique multi-layer construction style. The WinkBed is a true hybrid mattress, uniting two systems of encased inner-spring coils with three types of designer foams. It promises greater comfort and contouring, pushback support, better airflow throughout, and greater durability over time.

This mattress is crafted out of the following materials:

Cover: The cover is made with a Tencel fiber which is beneficial for the following reasons

  • Very quick drying and breathable, more breathable than cotton or linen
  • Tencel is derived from Eucalyptus trees which are a renewable resource thus limiting the environmental impact.
  • Tencel is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class 1 certified – the highest standard that guarantees the material is safe enough for babies and children

Natural Fire Barrier: WinkBeds uses a fire barrier that is made from cotton and wood-pulp derived rayon. The barrier is made entirely from cellulose-based raw materials with absolutely no chemicals or additives included.

Contour Box Top (2-inch thickness): The sleep surface is built using a contour box top, which contains a proprietary blend of HyperSoft foam and gel foam that’s U.S. CertiPure-certified and eco-friendly. The blend is useful for the following reasons:
  1. More buoyant than memory foam, so you don’t get unwanted body depressions or that “stuck feeling”
  2. Contours to your body, but is more responsive when you move
  3. Minimizes motion transfer so sleepers don’t get woken up by a restless partner
  4. Keeps its shape over time
  5. The gel promotes a cool sleep temperature
  6. The foam blend is stitched securely around the mattress perimeter top to create a box of padding instead of a pillow with loose edges. This knit pattern keeps the foam in the sleep surface evenly distributed, so it won’t ever sag, unlike a pillow top
  7. CertiPure certification means WinkBeds beds are made without any ozone depleters, PBDE flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, prohibited phthalates, and it’s low in volatile organic compound emissions, at less than 0.5 parts per million.

Beneath that…

2.5 inch foam-encased pocketed Micro Air-Spring coils (1,358 coils/per Queen): The top layer of Micro Air-Springs are encased within 2.5 inches of medium density foam.
  1. This top layer of springs helps to optimize your bed and your body’s sleep temperature by encouraging airflow around the sleep surface, so the bed sleeps cool
  2. Naturally evaporates any moisture from sweat
  3. Creates a supportive, flexible, pressure-relieving effect
  4. Sleeps 28% cooler than all-foam products

Beneath that…

4 inches of high ILD foam-encased perimeter support (around the perimeter of the mattress only): The edges of the mattress are reinforced using 4 inches of high ILD perimeter support foam. This feature accomplishes the following:
  1. You can sleep all the way to the edge of the bed without any sagging.
  2. You can sit on the edge of the bed with good support.
  3. The amount of usable sleep surface is greater due to the edge support. It actually makes your bed feel like its bigger.(I know this sounds crazy but you have to try it).

Beneath that…

Individually enclosed, high-profile 14.15 gauge tempered steel coil support system (858 coils/queen): Soft on first touch, firm on deep compression, the tempered steel coil support system provides localized pressure point relief and the push-back body support for optimal alignment of the spine and joints. Some of the finer points:
  1. High coil count is better for weight distribution and conformity to body shape
  2. Innovative coil design allows the coil to progressively firm as it’s compressed, ensuring support from the coil unit strengthens naturally with increased body weight
  3. 100% working wire – every part of surface flexes
  4. Coils are encased with an ultrasonically-welded cotton mesh which ensures noiseless performance and the elimination of friction
  5. Head-to-foot laced helicals stabilize to reduce motion transfer

Beneath that…

2 inches of support foam on bottom side: Adds to the overall stability of the mattress.

Other features of the mattress:
  1. All foam is CertiPure-certified
  2. The WinkBed owns a top durability score, meaning during tests stimulating a year of bed usage, there was less than a 1% change in the height and support of the sleep surface. This bests the poly-chemical foam used in most other mattresses (49% change), memory foam (17%) and latex (23%).

My Winkbed Mattress Findings

WinkBed Luxury Firm Review

Here’s me on the Winkbed Luxury Firm

Winkbed Luxury Firm

WinkBeds are easy to order, just name address and credit card number gets one delivered.  Once you place an order, your bed is made and shipped in a few days. That’s right, they’re made on demand so they aren’t suffocating in a plastic bag for months. There’s not much turnaround time at all. Unlike the Bed in a Box shipping experience, they don’t just leave it at your doorstep. Instead, they coordinate with a local delivery company to bring the mattress into your house and into the room of your choosing. It’s easy and convenient.

The Winkbed used to come shipped unboxed but now they all come compressed and rolled in a box.

Here is a queen size luxury firm right out of the box.

Upon opening the bed the first thing I noticed is that there was very little smell. This is probably because the mattress is not vacuum packed and so can breathe a bit.  The only other time I came across this is when I reviewed the Love Bed and of course any natural latex bed.

The WinkBed has a little more motion transfer to it than all the foam beds that I have tested. This is due to the fact that it has springs so that should be expected. If you appreciate the bounciness of a spring mattress, you will get that with this bed with the bonus of the benefits of memory foam.

As I said before the WinkBed has some bounce to it. Which can be a good thing, “Wink, Wink”.

Winkbed Soft Review

winkbed soft

You can now purchase the Winkbed in a Soft Medium or Firm feel. Many people visiting our online mattress showroom to try out the Winkbed find that it is a little on the firmer end of the spectrum in comparison to other hybrid mattresses. If you want to sink in your mattress a bit more, then I definitely recommend the soft version of the Winkbed. Here’s a summary of the soft version of the Winkbed:

The soft Winkbed is designed for sleepers who prefer a deeper sink for their mattress. Compared to the medium WinkBed, the soft version uses a more flexible coil system and extra layer of foam in the sleep surface for added body contour. It’s ideal for sleepers who want the same award-winning quality as the medium WinkBed, but with a slightly softer, more plush feel.

The soft features a plushtop instead of our regular euro top, which has an extra inch of foam. It also utilizes a more flexible support coil system (the lower coils) which allow sleepers to sink deeper into the mattress. Otherwise, the construction is the same as the regular WinkBed.

The firm is essentially the same design as the regular WinkBed, but it utilizes a more supportive zoned coil system in the lower layer.  The middle third of the coils are a firmer so sleepers get more support through the midsection. This coil system is called the Quadcoil, because every 4 coils are banded together. A little more information below. Before I got my climate control set, I was sleeping on this version and its really nice. Perfect for people who like a firm mattress but still want some cushion/body contour.

Winkbeds also feature Quad Coil pocket coils here’s some more information on the quad coil system.

Winkbed Plus Review

winkbed plus

Winkbed Plus
  1. High Density “anti-sag” Foam

Constructed with high-density foam cushioning, with a minimum density of 1.8 pcf (pounds per cubic foot). That’s over 50% denser than the foam in a standard innerspring mattress and is essentially sag-proof.

  2. Latex support layer

A 2.5″ layer of 100% pure latex that contains 7 distinct support zones. Pure latex has been proven to maintain its firmness and shape better than any other foam product on the market. Our latex features an open cell design that maximizes heat transfer away from the body.

  3. Third Party Tested For Durability

In a simulation of 20 years of bed use by a 350 lb sleeper, the Plus by WinkBeds retained both its loft and and firmness over the simulated time frame. We repeat this test periodically to ensure long term consistency and reliability.

Patented 5-Zone EliteEdge individually wrapped support coil

Features a patented individually wrapped coil design that is specifically built to support heavier weights. Coils are banded together and reinforced to ensure a supremely supportive and durable feel.

Winkbed Firm

The firm option is designed for those who prefer a more supportive sleeping surface or for people who primarily sleep on their back or stomach.

The WinkBed Firm mattress features:

  1. Tencel cover: A soft, eco-friendly, and breathable cover that helps wick away moisture and keep you cool during the night.
  2. Euro-pillow top: A layer of Hypersoft Foam adds comfort and pressure relief, while a gel-infused foam layer helps regulate temperature.
  3. Pocketed micro air-spring coils: These tiny coils provide targeted support and pressure relief, as well as enhanced airflow for a cooler sleep.
  4. LumbarLayer: A layer of high-density foam to enhance lumbar support and maintain proper spinal alignment.
  5. Zoned support coils: Individually wrapped coils are zoned to provide optimal support and pressure relief for different parts of the body. Firmer coils are placed in the middle of the mattress for enhanced lumbar support.
  6. Extra edge support: A high-density foam encasement surrounds the coil system, providing a sturdy edge and preventing sagging.

The WinkBed Firm is ideal for those who prefer a firmer sleeping surface or require additional support due to their sleeping position or body weight.

Winkbed Soft vs. Winkbed Plus

Below is a video showing the differences between the Winkbed soft and the Winkbed Plus. I found that the Plus feels very similar in firmness to the Luxury Firm, thier most popular model. The difference is that the plus has a layer of latex instead of the microcoil system making it more resilient for heavy sleepers. The weight limit of the Winkbed Plus hasn’t been established. The standard Winkbed models were designed to accommodate sleepers up to 350 lbs. While the Winkbe Plus will accommodate sleepers over 350 lbs.

My Winkbeds Recommendation

Not only did I like sleeping on the WinkBed, my wife did too, aka, the Sleep Sherpette? She prefers a softer mattress than I do however this mattress achieved the best of both worlds by providing a firm innerspring with a soft memory foam top. So, I would definitely recommend this to couples that may have different comfort preferences.

Many people have been asking how the WinkBed compares to the Saatva Mattress. I found that the WinkBed is just plain more comfortable than the Saatva. It also has less motion transfer.

WinkBeds have gone through a significant amount of durability testing and are built to last. I think it’s worth the extra cost upfront to pay for that instead of finding yourself mattress hunting again.

If you are wondering how the Winkbed compares to Saatva check out my Winkbed vs Saatva comparison.

Where can you try out the Winkbeds in person? Winkbeds doesn’t have its own retail stores but you can try out the Winkbed at the Sleep Sherpa mattress showroom in San Diego.

Winkbeds vs. DreamCloud vs. Saatva

When comparing WinkBeds, Saatva, and DreamCloud mattresses in terms of value for money and suitability for different sleeping positions, it’s essential to consider the unique features of each mattress. Here’s a breakdown of each mattress:

  1. WinkBeds:
  • Value for money: Offers a high-quality, durable hybrid mattress with a range of firmness options. Slightly more expensive than DreamCloud, but competitive with Saatva.
  • Sleeping positions: With four firmness options (Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, and Plus), WinkBeds cater to various sleeping positions and preferences. The variety makes it easier to find a suitable option for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.
  1. Saatva:
  • Value for money: Saatva mattresses are known for their luxury feel and quality construction, which includes an organic cotton cover, memory foam, zoned pocketed coils, and a euro-pillow top. Prices are competitive with WinkBeds.
  • Sleeping positions: Saatva offers three firmness options (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm), making it suitable for different sleeping positions. The Luxury Firm option is popular among back and stomach sleepers, while Plush Soft caters to side sleepers. The Firm option is ideal for heavier individuals or those who prefer a firmer surface.
  1. DreamCloud:
  • Value for money: DreamCloud mattresses are generally more affordable than WinkBeds and Saatva, offering a good balance between quality and price. The hybrid construction includes a cashmere-blend cover, quilted foam, gel-infused memory foam, pocketed coils, and a high-density foam base.
  • Sleeping positions: DreamCloud comes in one medium-firm option (around 6.5 on a 1-10 scale), which is suitable for most sleepers but may not cater to those with specific firmness preferences. This firmness level works well for back and stomach sleepers, as well as some side sleepers.

In summary, if you’re looking for the best value for money, DreamCloud may be a good option due to its lower price point. However, WinkBeds and Saatva offer more firmness options and cater better to specific sleeping positions. It’s essential to consider your personal preferences, sleeping position, and budget before making a decision. Test out mattresses within their trial periods to determine which one is the best fit for you.

Are Winkbeds Made to Order?

Yes, WinkBeds mattresses are made to order. This means that they are not pre-made and stored in a warehouse, but rather they are manufactured specifically for each customer’s order. This allows WinkBeds to customize their mattresses to meet the specific needs and preferences of each individual customer, and ensures that customers receive a fresh, new mattress that has not been sitting in a warehouse for an extended period of time.

Do WinkBeds Feel Like Memory Foam?

No, the WinkBeds mattress does not feel like traditional memory foam. WinkBeds uses a combination of materials in their mattress construction, including a layer of micro coils, high-density foam, and a layer of gel-infused foam. This results in a mattress that has a more traditional innerspring feel, with added support and pressure relief from the foam layers. The gel-infused foam also helps to dissipate heat, which can be an issue with some memory foam mattresses. Overall, the WinkBeds mattress is designed to provide a balance of comfort and support, without the sinking feeling associated with some memory foam mattresses.

Do They Require Deep Pocket Sheets?

It depends on the height of the specific WinkBeds mattress you have. WinkBeds offers mattresses in different heights, ranging from 11.5 inches to 15 inches. If you have a thicker mattress, such as the WinkBeds Luxury Firm, which is 14.5 inches thick, you may need deep pocket sheets to ensure a proper fit. WinkBeds recommends using sheets with a pocket depth of at least 14 inches for their thicker mattresses. However, if you have one of the thinner WinkBeds models, such as the WinkBeds Soft or Firm, which are 11.5 inches thick, regular pocket sheets should suffice. It’s always a good idea to double-check the height of your mattress and compare it to the pocket depth of your sheets before making a purchase to ensure a proper fit.

Do You Need A Foundation For A Winkbed?

WinkBeds mattresses are designed to work with a variety of bed frames, including platforms, slatted bases, and adjustable bases. However, it is recommended that you use a foundation or base that provides adequate support for your specific WinkBeds mattress model.

For example, the WinkBeds Luxury Firm and Plus models are designed to work best with a sturdy, supportive foundation or platform. This helps to maintain the integrity of the mattress and prevent sagging or premature wear.

If you have a WinkBeds mattress and are unsure what type of foundation or base to use, it is best to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or contact their customer support for recommendations. In general, a solid platform or foundation with a flat, even surface is recommended for most WinkBeds mattresses.

How Long Do WinkBeds Last?

The lifespan of a WinkBeds mattress can vary depending on factors such as usage, care, and the specific model of the mattress. However, on average, a WinkBeds mattress is expected to last between 7-10 years with proper care and maintenance.

To ensure the longevity of your WinkBeds mattress, it is recommended that you rotate it every 3-6 months to prevent uneven wear. Additionally, using a mattress protector can help protect the mattress from spills and stains, which can also help extend its lifespan.

It’s important to note that the warranty provided by WinkBeds can also provide some indication of the expected lifespan of their mattresses. For example, the WinkBeds mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, which covers defects in materials and workmanship. This warranty period is a good indication of the expected lifespan of the mattress.

Overall, with proper care and maintenance, a WinkBeds mattress should provide comfortable and supportive sleep for several years.

Are WinBeds Good for Heavy People?

WinkBeds mattresses are designed to provide comfortable and supportive sleep for a wide range of body types and sizes, including heavier individuals. However, the specific WinkBeds model that is best for heavy people can vary depending on factors such as sleep position, personal preferences, and body shape.

For example, the WinkBeds Plus is specifically designed to provide additional support and durability for individuals weighing over 300 pounds. This mattress features a reinforced innerspring system and high-density foam to provide targeted support and prevent sagging.

Additionally, the WinkBeds Luxury Firm and Firm models also offer a supportive feel that may be well-suited for heavier individuals, particularly those who prefer a firmer mattress. These models feature a combination of micro-coils and high-density foam that provide a balance of comfort and support.
