Top 5 Floating Bed Frames
Nordik Platform Bed
Pros |
Cons |
Weight capacity of 500 pounds |
Manufactured in Canada |
Expert assembly available for an extra cost |
Only available in two sizes |
Eco-friendly material used |
|
This is a true floating bed that gives the appearance of being suspended from above. The bed creates this illusion because of the support legs that are placed very close to the middle frame. This positioning, combined with the low clearance, hides the legs from the eyes, making the bed frame appear as if it is “floating” above the ground.
The materials used in its construction carry the CARB II and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. These certifications vouch for the environment-friendly nature of the product. The frame is essentially made of particleboard and MDF (medium density fiberboard) materials, only allowing the manufacture to keep it within the budget range.
Nordik Platform Bed sports an elegant finish with a smooth laminated exterior. It is available in 5 colors that will suit any style and decor. The frame is low in height and stands at 4 inches above the ground. This clean low profile gives a highly modern look to the bed. The beam ends are nicely secured to wooden frames giving the bed added protection against any damage during transport.
The bed itself weighs about 100 pounds but can carry up to 500 pounds. It is, however, only available in two sizes of twin and queen. Another point that reduces the appeal is that the bed is manufactured in Canada and shipped from there itself. The order usually ships within 48 hours, and shipping costs are free if you order through Amazon.

Modway Bed Frame

Cons |
Choice of upholstery or faux leather |
Comes in only queen size |
Appealing aesthetics |
No storage space |
Comes in 3 pieces or as a queen bed frame |
|
Modway bed frame is a truly modern piece of furniture. The lines are understated and offer sleekness with sophistication. The bed is quintessentially modern in its outlook with the features it offers and maintains high quality with the classic wooden finish. The bed comes with an added center beam for added support to the structure. It is made of high-quality strong wood along with fiberboard for reinforced durability. This ensures that the frame is noise-less, making for a perfectly sound and peaceful sleeping surface. The wood grain veneer is effortlessly smooth, giving the product a smooth, highly glossy finish.
This bed frame can be bought as a 3 piece set or as a queen frame. The three-piece set consists of a floating bed frame with a headboard and two side stands. The nightstands make the overall set very convenient to use by giving you extra side space for bedside accessories like night lamps. The side stands are optional, and you can just as easily forgo them if you want.
On the flip side, this bed frame takes up too much space, and if you are already hard on space, then this might not be the right choice for you. The shelf of this bed frame that surrounds the mattress adds drastically to the footprint of the frame. Apart from the large space consumption, this bed frame also comes with a tricky assembly process. The drill holes provided do not fit together, causing a lot of problems in the assembly process.
Highlights
- Comes in walnut and cappuccino finish
- Choice of upholstery or leather
- Queen size only
- Foam padded headboard
- Thick LVL wood slats set 3 inches apart
- Supports memory foam and innerspring mattresses

South Shore Floating Frame

Cons |

No storage space |
Available in 5 colors |

High durability |
The best thing about South Shore floating bed is its minimalistic design and the true optical illusion of floating it carries with it. Most floating beds have support legs that are visible, thereby detracting from the whole suspended finish, but the South shore has base support so close to the center that it is invisible to the eyes and stays hidden beneath the platform. This gives the frame a “floating in mid-air” look adding to its overall appeal.
The minimalistic style it carries also gives the frame an added advantage of being versatile and easily adjustable with all types of décor. In addition to this easy adaptability, the South Shore bed frame also comes with a practical edge. The frame has a low space footprint and does not dominate the bedroom area. It also offers you an additional under-bed storage feature which is great for getting all the clutter out of the way. The storage space is cleverly concealed beneath the top part of the frame or the mattress base.
It carries with it an anti-slip edging that helps in keeping the mattress in place and prevents it from slipping. The frame comes with a 5-year warranty from the manufacturer and a very supportive customer care service.
Highlights
- Only available in queen size
- Comes in 6 color choices

What Is A Floating Bed Frame?
A floating Bed Frame is essentially a low-profile bed frame that gives the illusion of floating above the ground due to its strategically placed legs. The legs are placed closer to the center of the frame, which allows for the optical floating illusion. This discreet base support system is what sets floating bed frames apart from the other bed frames.
Just like all the other bed frames, the floating bed frame also gives you adequate support for both the mattress and the sleeper. Some of the floating frames come attached to the wall for a more advanced floating appearance. You generally do not need a box spring with floating frames since they come with in-built slats for the mattresses.
The majority of the floating bed frames are made of wood since wood is more pliable and durable than other materials like metal, foam, or fabric. These frames are available in a range of prices with cheap ones to suit the budget conscious and really expensive ones which offer other added features like a headboard, overhead and under bed lights, side tables, etc.
The Good and the Bad of Floating Bed Frames
Just like any other product in the market, the floating bed frames also come with their own set of good and bad features. These are listed below:
Pros
- Floating bed frames leave the space underneath them free, which gives you added storage space
- It offers more possibilities of accessorizing the bedroom space
- The floating feature makes it easier to clean under the bed than usual bed frames
- Comes with in-built slats and hence saves you money on buying an additional box spring for the mattress
- Some frames come with below-bed platform lights and other features that add to the modern look and spruces up the bedroom decor
Cons
- These frames are only available in low profile. This makes it difficult to get in and out of bed, especially for the elderly
- The quality is directly related to the support durability of the frame. Expect the cheaper versions to give way after a few years at max
- Most of the floating bed frames are only available in certain sizes with no scope of custom sizing
- You might initially feel uncomfortable and anxious on a bed with no visible support resulting in a disturbed sleep cycle
Things to Consider When Buying Floating Bed Frame
Mattress Specifications
If you already have a mattress, then you should look at your mattress size and choose a floating bed frame that fits that size. Mattresses can be an expensive purchase, and it might be an added burden to change both mattress and bed frames together. Also, most floating bed frames are only available in limited sizes; hence if your mattress is custom-designed, then you might want to consider other bed frame types.
Mattress Requirement
Apart from mattress size, some mattresses are also only recommended for a particular type of bed frame. Not all mattresses are compatible with a floating bed frame. It is generally recommended to get a mattress that is not too thick to sit comfortably with a floating bed frame. You should check these requirements before making a decision.
Mattress Warranty
Most mattress warranties only cover certain bed frame types. Make sure that your mattress warranty does not get void if you use it on a floating bed frame. Keep in mind that floating bed frames do not support box springs.
Vendor Shipping Policy
It is better to buy a floating bed which comes with white-glove service. It can be a very difficult task to set up a floating bed. The frame itself will be very heavy to be easily maneuvered, and setting up the base support can prove to be exhausting work. Hence check the shipping policy and only buy from vendors that are willing to set it up for you.
Warranty and Return Policy
Most bed frames, floating bed frames include come with a good 7 to 10 years of warranty. If you are not getting a good warranty period, then it will be prudent to look for other brands. Providing a warranty means that the product is reliable hence do not opt for a floating bed frame with no warranty. Additionally, most manufacturers also offer a sleep trial period. This helps you to make a better decision and not be stuck with a bed frame you do not like.
Low Profile Feature
Floating beds typically offer only 14 to 17 inches of base height. This makes the frame extremely uncomfortable for some people. The lower height means that you will give added knee and back stress while getting in and out of bed. Keep this in mind before investing in this frame.
Storage Space
Floating bed frames have the whole area under them, which can be used for storage purposes. However, this space is only appropriate for smaller objects with a low height. If you need to store larger objects, then you should look for a different frame.
Weight Concerns
Floating bed frames generally come with a weight constraint. They can only support a set spectrum of weight and should not be overburdened. This makes them very unsuitable for kids prone to jumping on the bed and larger adults. Bear in mind that the weight of the mattress will also be added to the bed frame structure.
Moving Frequency
If you are prone to moving or shifting, then floating bed frames might not be a good choice for you. This is because these frames are hard to set up and heavy to move around easily. They are also difficult to move in and out of doorframes.
Alternatives to Floating Bed Frame
Bed frames are more about practicality, comfort, and support than anything else. While floating bed frames offer good support and comfort, they do have certain drawbacks that make them unsuitable for many people, especially the older segment and people with mobility issues. Some of the other more convenient bed frame options apart from the floating bed frame are as follows:
General Bed Frame
These are essentially non-adjustable structures that come in various heights, sizes, materials, and price ranges to satisfy your every preference. Most of the bed frames feature bed slats for better mattress support which are generally made of wood and metal, giving you optimal airflow and ventilation. These general bed frames are mostly tufted with foam and fabric for cushion and improved aesthetics.
Storage Bed Frame
A bed frame that has a compartment or drawers featured within it is known as a storage bed frame. The drawers are built under the mattress and sleeping platform. Just like general bed frames, storage bed frames also come in various sizes, materials, and price ranges. The drawers can either be pulled from the sides, or they can be accessed from under the mattress. This is an extremely convenient option for those requiring extra storage spaces.
Platform Bed Frame
Floating bed frames are a type of platform bed frame. The only difference is that floating beds have cleverly placed support in the middle that is hidden, and platform bed frames have visible support legs. They do not require any box spring and usually come with an attached headboard.
Box Spring Bed Frame
A box spring bed frame is not a bed frame. It is a support base for the mattress and is generally used with a general bed frame for added mattress support. However, you can also use it without a proper bed frame as just a supportive mattress base. Box spring is essentially a wooden frame with springs that are encased in fabric. It prolongs the mattress life through optimal weight distribution and is a good idea for those looking for low maintenance and cheaper options.
Is Floating Bed Frame For You?
Floating bed is a fun, versatile, inventive, and modern concept. It brings to the room a different aesthetic appeal that is both quirky and interesting. These bed frames are also a very practical solution for space savers. So, go ahead and give these frames a try. Chances are you will fall in love with the low clearance, modish look.

Trundle beds are great space savers. They are perfect for apartment living and small homes with space constraints. Even though large parties and sleepovers are exciting to hold, the biggest constraint is the sleep solution. You might want to have your whole family join in, but space might be holding you back. Taking care of and managing sleeping arrangements for guests during sleepovers or family reunions can be stressful.
With all the options out there, from air mattresses to camping bags, trundle beds are a much better and aesthetically appealing choice when it comes to providing extra sleeping space. For one, they are a lot less bulky and uncomfortable than all the other solutions. This is the biggest reason for the rise in popularity of the trundle bed concept. Unfortunately, with all the choices in the market, it can get very difficult to zero in on the perfect one for you. You are sure to find the perfect trundle bed for your home amongst the top seven trundle beds listed in this article.
What is Trundle Bed?
Many people tend to confuse trundle beds with day beds. Trundle beds are vastly different from day beds. They are a set of two beds with one bed tucked under the other sitting on a different frame. The lower bed or the secondary bed is cleverly concealed under the primary bed and can be rolled out when required.
This aspect of concealment and rolling out makes trundle beds extremely functional and efficient. They are a great space-saving option with amazing flexibility of quick and easy storage. You just have to roll the lower bed under the primary bed, and you are done. There are no hassles of taking it apart, folding and keeping aside as with air mattresses.
Trundles are generally available in twin and double sizes. However, they are also custom made to size, and you can get one with your exact specification made. They come with a three-sided enclosure like the popular day beds and as your regular beds as well. You have the choice to decide which one you prefer. The best bit is that you can buy the trundle separately and fit it under your existing bed. As long as the upper frame is bigger or of the same size, you can easily slide the trundle bed under it.
The trundle mattress can be on a lower ground level or higher depending on the frame and wheel size. It can also be as a pop up to come at the same level as our primary bed. The two beds can then be attached to form a convenient sized double bed to accommodate couples or children. Some trundles also come as pull out drawers. This drawer space can then be utilized as a mattress space or just for storage. You can also get trundles with drawers under the mattress drawer. This is especially helpful since you get both an additional sleeping space and storage space under that sleeping space.
Who Is It For?
Trundles are great. They are functional, efficient, and convenient space solutions. But is trundle the solution you are looking for? Sometimes the best things can be a misfit for many. This is because some things are just not the right choice for your personal space. So, before you head out the front door to buy a trundle, you should go through the following checklist to ascertain if it is the best choice for you.
- People with mobility issues
- Perfect for kids’ room
- People with frequent sleepovers
- For office use
- Transitional bed for kids
- Those requiring additional room space

Buying Guide for Trundle Beds
With certain factors clear in your head, it is easy to make the right decision even when you have a huge variety in front of you. There is nothing more annoying than having purchased a bed you are not quite sure of. The factors listed below will help you avoid that mistake and buy the perfect trundle for your home:
Design
Trundles come in different designs and structures. You have a variety of options, from color choice to the type of materials used and the theme it incorporates. Keep in mind the overall decor of your room and pick one that suits and complements that decor. You do not want a trundle that clashes horribly with your existing decor.
Frame Material
With trundles, you get to choose between two types of frame materials. You can decide on a proper traditional wooden style to a gothic, high framed metal style. The popular frame materials are:
- Metal Frames: These are the lightest of all trundle beds. The metal frames are less durable than the wooden frames, but they offer a modern gothic look to your room. Metal is also great for an industrial feel. The lightweight feature makes metal trundles more convenient to move around. However, metal frame trundles do not come with drawers or storage space that is an added feature with the wooden trundles.
- Wooden Frames: These are the most common type of trundle frames. The ideal wood type for this is either mahogany or oak. Wooden frames are generally preferred over metal and mixed frames since they offer better durability and other add-on features like storage drawers.
- Mixed Frames: These are trundles that feature both wooden and metal frames. The wooden frame makes the base of the frame while the metal frames are used on the sides of the trundle. This allows the trundle bed to be lighter in weight for easy transport and mobility along with the benefit of added durability.
Frame Structure
Two types of trundles are generally found in the market. These are:
- Drawer Type: These are trundles that come with a drawer-like space where the mattress is fitted. A few trundles might even feature additional drawers over this mattress drawer for some extra storage.
- Pop-out Type: This trundle allows you to adjust the height of the mattress on it. You can keep it level with the primary bed or at any height you want. Generally, pop out trundle comes in the twin size. This allows you to create a king-size sleeping space.
Add On Feature
Some trundles feature extra storage space through carefully constructed pull out drawers. These are an excellent choice for those wanting to store things under the bed. An extra added space over the space saved by the trundle can be an amazing selling point.
Assembly
Most trundles are super easy to set up. They generally come as one package and can be assembled in less than 30 minutes. A few don’t even require additional tools and just need to be screwed tight. However, some can be pretty hard to set up. Make sure that you get the one that is easy to assemble, especially if you are not very handy with tools or in following instructions.
Secure Wheels
Trundles feature wheels on all four corners of the base for sliding it in and out from under the primary bed. However, the wheels can get pretty bothersome while you are using the bed. You do not want the trundle bed to move with you every move. Wheel locks can help secure the bed in one place for a restful night. You need to be on the lookout for trundles that offer this feature if you want to wake up in the same spot you slept!
Pricing
Before you even start looking at trundles, you should have a clearly defined budget in mind. This way, you will not go overboard with the amount you spend. Trundles come in different price ranges depending on the quality of materials used; the design, structure, etc. Look for one that gives you the best value for money in terms of functionality and effectiveness.

Construction of the Floyd Bed
My Floyd Bed Findings
Floyd is an ideal bed if you live a more mobile lifestyle and are tired of moving bulky furniture. You can expect some damage to your furniture during a move, it’s just a part of the process. With the Floyd, it’s easy to disassemble and reduce the chances it will get banged up.
Setting up the bed is super simple and I appreciate that Floyd used much less styrofoam in their packaging than other beds I have unboxed.
I received a queen size for review which includes 3 platform bases that you align vertically and attach with metal connectors.
There’s no nails, screws or glue required.
It’s the same process with the stands for the corners of the bed.
The whole bed is held together with two straps at the head and foot of the bed. I found this to be the most cumbersome part of the setup. I don’t normally use ratchets so it took some time to loop it correctly and to get it tight enough on the frame. Granted, if I were to do this again it wouldn’t take as long but keep in mind there is a little bit of a learning curve.
Here’s what it looks like all set up, without the headboard which you can purchase separately.
The headboard was the easiest piece to install. The metal base pieces slide in between the slats so make sure that the strap holding them all together is loose enough then tighten the strap again and rest the headboard on the metal pieces and screw it in to secure it.
My Floyd Bed Recommendation
Since the introduction of the bed, Floyd has introduced a bunch of other furniture for your home, all around the concept of easy setup and takedown. I like the modern look of the bed and the fact that you can expand it into a king size by adding another slat or removing one for a twin size bed. Keep in mind that the frame sits low to the ground which can make it a little harder to get out of if you are tall like me. I recommend Floyd for people in urban spaces where flexibility is a premium. Often people buy new furniture after a major life event like moving, getting married, divorced or having kids. This bed makes it possible to get a bigger or smaller mattress without having to get rid of your frame.

Waterbeds have been around for centuries, going back as far as 3600 BC, when Persians filled mattresses made of goatskin with water. In the 19th century, hospitals used waterbeds made of rubber for patients. Fast forward to 1968, Charles Hall invented a waterbed that had a vinyl mattress, which he named “The Pleasure Pit.” He called it so because the waterbed was known to be better than other beds in quite a few ways, including in promoting proper sleep.
By the 1980s, waterbeds became increasingly popular, with 1 in 5 homes in the United States having one. However, they had fallen out of popularity once the 1990s came around – mainly due to the maintenance required. The good news is that anyone who wants a waterbed can still find them today. You can find waterbeds mostly online, but they are also available in some stores.
Types of Waterbeds
Before you find out the types of waterbeds available, you should know what exactly a waterbed is. Simply put, it is a vinyl mattress filled with water. In the 1980s, when waterbeds were at the peak of their popularity, consumers had to use a garden hose to fill up the entire bed with water. Today, tubes called “bladders” are the only thing you have to fill when you buy a waterbed. Some of the waterbeds you will find in current market can support themselves, doing away with the need for a separate frame. You will also find some innovative ones that come with temperature-control devices to heat the water.
Waterbeds come in many brands and sizes. However, you will find two main types of waterbed mattresses on the market today – Hardside and Softside.
Hardside Waterbeds
This type of waterbed is designed with hardwoods or softwoods to help it hold its shape. In other words, Hardside waterbeds come with a frame. With bookcase-type or plain headboards, they look more like traditional beds than Softside waterbeds. This is why many consumers looking for aesthetics rather than comfort go for Hardside waterbeds rather than Softside ones. They look more sophisticated and can add to the visual appeal of a bedroom.
When you choose a Hardside waterbed, you will need to buy California-size sheets to go with it. This puts a limit on your choices when you go shopping for linens. But if you do not mind this small issue, Hardside waterbeds are the right type for you.
Softside Waterbeds
This type of waterbed is a popular choice among homeowners as it provides a comfortable outer edge. Softside waterbeds are designed with foam bolsters to help them hold their shape. In other words, foam surrounds the bed. A fabric casing covers the foam and is topped with a padded layer as well. All of these materials used in Softside waterbeds sit upon a well-designed upholstered box, a lot like a box spring.
Apart from the comfort they offer, ease of shopping for linens is one of the reasons that Softside waterbeds are popular among consumers. Regular-sized linen or sheet can be used with this type of waterbed.
Type of Maintenance Required for Waterbeds
The waterbed fell out of popularity in the 1990s due to a number of reasons, including the bed’s weight, the lengthy process of filling up the beds and the extensive maintenance required to take care of waterbeds and make them last as long as possible.
Although these problems are not as major as before, you do still need to perform some maintenance on waterbeds. To have and use a waterbed:
- You need to do the job of filling your waterbed yourself. When you buy one, you must bear in mind that it can be quite a tedious task to install a waterbed mattress. A king waterbed holds approximately 235 gallons of water. Installation is a drawback for many people because it is not always the easiest or most fun task to snake a garden hose into the bedroom.
- It is necessary to apply a waterbed conditioner every year. You need to do this to keep the vinyl of your waterbed supple and keep it from becoming brittle. Doing this annually helps in making the waterbed last longer.
- Although leaks are not as much of a problem as they were in the past, you do need to check and fix them from time to time. You can use a vinyl repair kit to fix leaks. These kits usually come with a vinyl repair patch and liquid cement. You can also use these kits to quickly fix and repair holes in air mattresses if you own one.
- It may be necessary that you set aside some time to drain the mattress now and then. Keep in mind that full waterbeds are extremely heavy – roughly 2000 pounds if it is a king size and slightly lesser if it is a queen. So, while the water in the mattress does not have to be changed, you will have to drain it if you are going to move a waterbed. You will need a garden hose to drain the mattress, similar to how you feel it.

When we think of a bed, the first image that comes to mind is that of a wooden frame with four legs, topped with a mattress, sheets, and pillows. Although this is the type of bed that most of us would prefer in the ideal circumstances, the truth is that in urban settings there is often not enough space to accommodate a big bed. Traditional beds are also expensive and cannot be packed and transported on the fly. So if you’re moving from place to another, you often need to sell off your bed and buy another one in your new home — the result: rising expenses.
When a traditional bed is inconvenient and expensive, you must resort to other options. The rollaway bed is one such option that provides you with the comfort of a conventional bed but also the portability and convenience that you find in no other bed. Not only is a rollaway bed much cheaper than a traditional bed, but it can also be assembled and disassembled easily and transported on the fly. But the problem is since rollaway beds are cheap, the market is flooded with them. In this guide, we discuss the features of a rollaway bed and talk about the best options today.
How Rollaway Bed is Different than a Conventional Bed?
A rollaway bed is essentially a foldable bed. It can be folded in half when not in use and opened up to make a full-size bed. Rollaway beds are usually made of metal. The sturdy metal frame is capable of handling the weight of one to two persons. At the bottom of the four legs of the frame are caster wheels that are used in easily moving the bed from one place to another. When the metal frame is folded in half, it takes very little space for storage. Some rollaway beds come with a foldable mattress, but even if they don’t, you can easily purchase a compatible mattress later.
Because rollaway beds are much lighter than traditional beds, take little storage space, and are easily portable, they can be used for extra guests, for a trip far from home, or if space is short in your new apartment. The only downside is that a foldable bed may not be capable of handling the weight of a 300-pound person. It is best for people of average weight.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Rollaway Beds
Although foldable beds offer many advantages to those who cannot get a stationary bed, there are also certain downsides that must be considered. Here we take a look at both:
Advantages
Affordability: The primary reason why rollaway beds are popular is their affordability. Stationary beds are often exorbitant, and also take up a lot of space in the room. For someone going through a tight situation, neither is possible. That’s when a foldable bed saves the day. It’s the fraction of the cost of a stationary bed, doesn’t take up much space, and is far better than sleeping on the floor.
Portability: Even if you have a stationary bed, you might want to have one or two foldable beds in storage. That’s because they are easily portable, and can accommodate one or two people if there’s not enough room. If you’re going for a long trip away from home, you may also carry a rollaway bed in the car, so you can have your own bed to sleep on. If you move houses often, investing in a portable rollaway bed can save you the hassle of moving heavy furniture. The caster wheels also make it convenient to move the bed from one location to another.
Disadvantages
Unattractive: Even though it gives you a comfortable surface to sleep on, a rollaway bed doesn’t offer anything in terms of aesthetic appeal. There are cabinet-style rollaway beds that look slightly better than the metal ones, but they are not as attractive as a stationary bed. Rollaway beds are typically used for convenience, not for enhancing the room decor.
Durability: As already mentioned above, foldable beds are not designed to handle the kind of weight that is usually handled by a stationary bed. The region where the bed folds is usually the weakest and can get damaged with regular wear and tear. Regardless of how you use it, a rollaway bed will never last as long as a stationary bed.
Types of Rollaway Beds
There are three types of rollaway beds, and all of them have their own upsides and downsides. They are:
Standard: The standard foldable bed usually consists of a tubular steel or metal frame and a mattress platform made out of polypropylene and wire spring mesh. Standard rollaway beds work well with both foam and innerspring mattresses, and they are also the cheapest.
Cabinet: This type of rollaway beds looks like a cabinet when folded, and also has fayed doors! When folded, a cabinet style rollaway bed hides the mattress and the bed frame — one of the panels of the cabinet functions as the platform for the mattress. Caster wheels are present in all models, and headboards and footboards may also be present in more expensive models.
Ottoman: Although this type of rollaway bed is much like the standard metal frame ones, the only difference is that this one also doubles as an ottoman. This bed doesn’t fold in half, but in a third, and converts into an ottoman. All you need is a cushion and a cover to make it a proper ottoman. Some of these ottoman style beds are shaped like boxes from which you have to pull out the mattress platform.
Factors to Consider While Buying A Rollaway Bed
Given that there are a huge variety of rollaway beds all over the market, you will want to take your time in picking one that’s right for you. A bed is one of the most used pieces of furniture in the house and should also be comfortable. Just because you do not have the convenience to get a full-size stationary bed does not mean that you must sacrifice comfort and durability. Rollaway beds are generally cheap, so you should be able to find something of good quality without exceeding your budget. But regardless of whether you choose a standard, cabinet or ottoman-style bed, the following factors should always be considered.
Construction and Durability: Rollaway beds are cheap, but it does not necessarily mean that you have to buy one every three months. Therefore, the bed should be durable, particularly if you are going to put it to regular use. Rollaway beds are usually constructed either out of steel or wood. Steel and aluminum beds are less expensive than the wooden ones but are not as durable. Because these types of beds can be folded, the maximum wear and tear happen to the joint where the bed folds. The best materials for the pivot are steel and wood, the latter being stronger but more expensive. If you want the joints of the bed to hold up well, you may choose a metal construction with a wooden pivot. If the entire bed is made of wood, it becomes heavier and does not remain as portable. Metal rollaway beds are also prone to developing creaking noises as they grow older. The rule of thumb when buying rollaway beds is that the cheaper it is, the shorter it will last.
Size of Rollaway Bed: The most commonly available size of a rollaway bed is a twin. This size is capable of comfortably accommodating one person. You also get full and queen sizes, but they are not as commonly found. The full and queen sizes can accommodate two people, but they are heavier and not very portable. If portability is not a concern, then you can try looking for a queen size rollaway bed. However, the bigger the bed, the more it will cost.
Mattress in Rollaway Bed: Rollaway beds come with and without a mattress. It comes down to your personal preference. If you already have a mattress, you can choose a foldable bed that doesn’t have a mattress. If you want something cheap, beds that come without a mattress will better suit your budget, even though you will have to buy a separate mattress. Rollaway beds that come with a mattress are a little expensive, but you are spared of the trouble of searching for a compatible mattress.
Rollaway beds can be paired with memory foam, innerspring, or polyurethane foam mattresses. But regardless of the mattress that you choose, it should be foldable. Otherwise, it will be broken in the middle soon enough.
Brand: Most reputed bedding companies manufacture rollaway beds and comfortable mattresses. But before choosing one brand over the other, make sure to read customer reviews to find out what is better. Often when buying a bed online, the customer tends to get swayed by the claims made by the company. But only reviews from real customers will help you know how the bed performs.
Top 6 Rollaway Beds of 2019
Best Overall Rollaway Bed: Milliard Premium Folding Rollaway Bed
When people buy a folding bed, they have resigned themselves to the fact that it can never match up to the softness and comfort of an actual mattress. And it’s true because it’s hard to find a foldable bed that offers the same comfort and plushness of a memory foam mattress. The Milliard Premium Folding Rollaway Bed is a rare find that, despite being a standard foldable bed, offers superior softness and comfort. While other memory foam rollaway beds are quite hard, the comfort and plush feel of this one has been vouched for by customers.
What makes this bed even more bouncy and comfortable is the mattress platform made of the trampoline, instead of wire mesh or slats. The mattress is four-inch thick, enough support for a foldable bed. Besides edge support, the foam also contours to your body and provides support to the pressure points. Sleeping on this bed, you will not be waking up with a sore back or still shoulders.
The entire construction of this bed is also pretty durable. The frame is made from double reinforced steel with a Clamshell folding style, ensuring that the bed retains its shape under any circumstance. Although the bed is not much of a looker, it does its job very well, providing support with a good mattress and durability with a strong frame. The weight of the bed is only 52 pounds, so it’s easy to move from place to place. Assembling it for the first time is also easy and doesn’t require tools– you simply have to attach the wheels, and you’re done. The assisted folding mechanism makes it convenient to open and fold the bed.
Pros
- One of the best and softest mattresses
- Strong, double reinforced construction
- Easy to assemble and unfold
- Not too heavy
Cons
- A little expensive

Best Budget Rollaway Bed: Symple Stuff Folding Bed
Budget rollaway beds usually come with a number of shortcomings and shoppers need to look past them in order to find quality. That’s because, despite the shortcomings, budget rollaway beds also offer plenty of advantages. The Symple Stuff Folding Bed is one such rollaway bedding that features an affordable price tag and a no-frills design but makes up with other perks.
This foldable bed comes with a 5-inch foam mattress on a bed base made of rigid slats. Although the mattress is thick enough to provide support, it is not too soft. In fact, many customers have commented that the mattress was a bit too hard for their liking. This isn’t surprising because most foldable beds that boast of a foam mattress aren’t as soft or comfortable as an actual memory foam mattress. The maximum capacity of the bed is 250 pounds, but you should not attempt to test it out– most metal frame rollaway beds are pretty frail at handling anything above 200 pounds. In general, this is a bed that’s best for a small or average sized person or a child. This is again where the maximum capacity of the bed comes into play — most budget rollaway beds are best for people who don’t weigh much, and it isn’t such a surprising or unique downside for any foldable budget bed.
If you’re on a budget and want a portable bed for one person, this affordable option from Symple Stuff is one of the most popular choices. But it’s most suited for occasional use than regular use as a stationary bed.
Pros
- Affordable and easily available
- No-frills design
- Five-inch mattress
Cons
- Mattress not too comfortable
- Construction could be more durable

Best Rollaway Innerspring Bed: Serta® Folding Bed with Mattress
If you prefer the feel of an innerspring mattress over a memory foam one, then there are innerspring options also available among rollaway beds. Just because you’re buying a portable bed doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice all your preferences. One of the most popular innerspring rollaway beds is the Serta Folding bed. The mattress it comes with has a traditional innerspring construction, so it replicates the feel of an actual innerspring bed.
Serta is a well-known name in the bedding industry, and all the quality and reputation of their other offerings come through in this folding bed. The bed is 73 inches long and 39 inches wide, the same width ad that of an XL Twin bed. The extra width is a nice addition since it allows the sleeper enough room to adjust position and roll over during the night. Those sleeping on the bed will also enjoy the comfort and support provided by the 12-gauge wound helical springs in the four-inch mattress. They manage to replicate the feel of a traditional innerspring mattress, so this rollaway bed by Serta isn’t a bad choice. Another significant feature of this bed is the height. It’s just 18 inches from the floor, which makes it easy for older people or those with mobility issues to get on and off the bed. The frame is made of angular steel, and the four caster wheels allow the bed to be easily moved from one room to another.
Pros
- Affordable
- Great innerspring design
- Comfortable and supportive
- Extra width
- Medium weight
Cons
- No information on warranty available

Best Rollaway Bed for Small Spaces: iBed Memory Foam Rollaway Guest Bed
Buying furniture for a small space can be tough. You want comfort and convenience without sacrificing the little floor space you have. This problem is more evident in urban settings, where small apartments are the most common living space. Thankfully, furniture is also made keeping the space constraints in mind. If you’re short on space and need a slim rollaway guest bed, your best bet is the iBed Memory Foam Rollaway Guest Bed. The benefit of this ultra slim design is that the bed folds to just 5 inches of thickness and can be stored anywhere from a closet to an attic. But just because it’s slim and trim does not mean it compromises on comfort or durability.
The bed is so small when folded that it also comes with a storage bag. You can fold it and leave it in the corner of the cupboard in the storage bag. Most rollaway beds are between 12 and 15 inches when folded, which makes this one the winner. The bed has a 3-inch memory foam mattress, which may not be the plushest but manages to provide the support that’s expected from a guest bed. The memory foam is resistant to dust mites, fungus, and odor, so you can store it safely without damage to the mattress. You also don’t need to turn the mattress because it doesn’t lose shape. It’s also great at regulating temperature and keeping the sleeper comfortable.
Pros
- Great for small spaces
- Solid steel construction
- Easy to fold and store
Cons
- Mattress, not the most comfortable
- Cannot be used as a regular bed

Best Rollaway Bed for Tall people: Edward Rollaway Bed with Box Spring Mattress
Tall individuals are familiar with the challenge of finding a comfortable bed to sleep on. When it comes to rollaway beds, they are almost always too short for tall people. Even if you find a good folding bed, you find that your legs stick out. That doesn’t make for a very comfortable night’s sleep. This is where the Edward Rollaway Bed is a winner. It’s 79 inches long, which isn’t gigantic but still big enough for taller individuals. It’s also the longest folding bed on the market today.
Although the width is a little narrow at 36 inches, it’s still plenty for the average sleeper. It’s hard to find a bed that fits your space and budget requirements and still provides comfort and support, but the Edward Rollaway Bed is a good choice. The box spring mattress is 5.5 inches, which may not be too thick but provides better support than 3-inch mattresses. There is an optional mattress cover available. Some users have said that the bed is a little too firm, and others have praised this very feature because it can handle even a 300-pound sleeper. The bed is also easy to assemble—you simply must put the bolts and nuts and wheels in place. It folds nicely in place and is convenient to store. One of the biggest downsides is the price—at $500, it’s one of the priciest rollaway beds on the market.
Pros
- Great for taller sleepers
- Sturdy metal construction
- Supportive mattress
Cons
- Expensive

Best Rollaway Bed for Durability: Sleep Revolution Resort Folding Guest Bed
If you want a bed that looks attractive and offers more durability than a standard cot-style rollaway bed, look no further than the Sleep Revolution Resort Folding Guest Bed. The fabric frame cover is matched with the mattress cover, giving a more appealing look to the bed. The quality and comfort of the bed is also much better than standard rollaway beds.
This bed looks and feels more like a twin-sized bed rather than a typical folding bed. Measuring 38 inches by 75 inches, the mattress has a four-inch layer of support foam topped with a one-inch layer of memory foam. The construction is sturdy and doesn’t budge when the wheels are locked into place. The capacity of the bed is also great– 250 pounds.
The downside is that the bed takes more effort to fold up and move around. If portability is the biggest requirement, then this bed may not be the ideal choice. But if your requirement is for a folding bed that will last a long time, then the lack of portability is not a big deal. The construction of the bed is superior, but the price tag is still affordable.
Pros
- Superior construction
- Appealing design
- Highly durable
- Mid-range pricing
Cons
- Not very portable
The market is flooded with a variety of rollaway beds. They are affordable, convenient, and fit into small spaces. But before making a purchase, read what other customers have to say and also consider if the features meet your requirements.

Modway is well known for their affordable furniture which can be found on Amazon. I received a free Anya bed for review. This bed currently retails on Amazon for $171 with Prime free shipping. You can choose from multiple colors and for this review, I chose light gray.
Setting up the Modway Anya Bed
If you have an Amazon Prime account your bed should arrive quickly assuming that the color you want is in stock. Please note that it is not 2 day shipping but more like 5-7 days.
Here’s a picture of what the bed looks like out of the box.
As you can see there aren’t that many parts which makes setup fairly easy.
Here’s a picture of the slat system. The slats are slightly bowed but this shouldn’t affect the performance of the mattress. While setting up the bed, I had to make sure everything fit preciesly there wasn’t much wiggle room for error which made setup longer but in the end, it results in a sturdier bed.
Here’s a picture of a bed on the completed frame.

My Modway Anya Findings
Overall this is a good bed for the price. If you are looking for a simple bed with no frills, this should work. Another popular Amazon bed are the Zinul lines of beds. These are very similar to the Modway except that the Zinus beds use flat slats while these are bowed but again, I didn’t notice that this affected performance. When you put a mattress on the bed the slats automatically flatten out.
You get about 5 inches of clearance underneath the bed for storage which isn’t much but since it is a modern design it is going to be low profile. From the floor to the slats it is 10 inches. Since most online mattress brands are 10 inches thick that means you will be a total of 20 inches from the ground while sleeping.
Similar to the Zinus beds, all the railings and slats are located in the back of the headboard. That means it comes delivered to you in a box about the size of the headboard.
The Amazon reviews for this bed are mixed right now but I didn’t notice any quality issues with my bed.

The Forever Foundations steel bed frame is a heavy duty bed frame that is ideal for heavy couples that need an extra sturdy sleeping surface in order to get the maximum benefit of their mattress. This bed frame supports up to a whopping 4,000 lbs!
A queen size Forever Foundation is currently selling on Amazon for $237.50 and comes with free shipping for Prime members. I received a free black frame but you can you can also get a grey colored frame.
Ordering the Forever Foundation
You can order direct from the Forever Foundation website or via Amazon. Either way the frame will arrive quickly. All the pieces will come in a box. Here’s what all the pieces look like out of the box:
Below are the specifications of the Forever Foundation as listed on their website:
Speficications
- Outstanding surface support and durability perfect for most of today’s luxury mattresses
- Three-in-one: bed support, foundation and storage
- 10-inch slat spacing and foot support slats
- Included: fabric deck for additional support and to allow for the mattress to properly breathe and headboard brackets
- Total height 16-inches from top of platform to floor using the standard 8-inch legs included
- Wieghs 68.5 lbs.
Findings
So far this is the sturdiest bed frame I have reviewed. It takes a little more work to put together but not that much more. You can tell when you put the steel slats together that it’s a tight fit which keeps the frame from creaking or wobbling. Here’s a shot of the frame with a mattress on it.
You can see in the back of the photo that there is a headboard attachment mount so that you can screw in a headboard to make your bed complete.
Here’s a photo fo the steel slats running across the frame. These are very heavy duty and snap into place.
Overall this is an excellent choice for people that want a foundation that will last many years. Since you can attach a headboard to it, you can create any look you want. I also like that it sits up high so that you can store bins underneath.
There are also accessories you can buy for it which include motion activated led lights to help you find your way at night.
If you move a lot you may want to go with somethin less heavy duty since setup and takedown will take a little longer and it is heavier due to the heavy steel. However if you want bed frame that will last, I haven’t found one sturdier than this one.

PONS Bed Review
Recently updated on March 9th, 2023 at 11:32 am
PONS has one of the coolest and stylish beds on the market right now. This bed is super easy to assemble as requires no tools and has built in USB ports on each side of the bed so that you can recharge your devices while you recharge in your sleep. A queen size PONS bed retails for $1,199 but with the $100 coupon code below you can get one for just shy of $1,100. This bed looks great and is very sturdy. Because it’s easy to setup, it’s also easy to take down making it an ideal bed for people on the move.
Overview
You can order the PONS bed direct from their site. What I really enjoy about it is that there is no risk in buying one as it comes with a 30 free trial period where you can return it for a full refund if you don’t like it withing that time. It also comes with free shippin AND free return shipping so you truly aren’t out anything.
The PONS bed will arrive in 3 boxes like the ones seen below. This makes for easy delivery and easy transport into your bedroom.
Below is a video overview of the bed. As you can see there is no slat system, instead it is 3 pieces of wood that fit into the frame providing a stable surface with no noise.
Specifications
- Weight, 185 lb.s, Queen size
- Primary Materials, solid hardwood and engineered wood with a wrapped veneer
- Electrical unit, power (30W, 15W per pair of USB ports)
- 6ft power cord
- Width 65.25″
- Length 86.375″
Findings
Like I said, installation is super easy. The boxes are even numbered so you know which one to open first. Even the boxes are well designed. As you can see below there is extra padding around the edges to keep the bed from getting damaged. The first box also includes an instruction manual but, again very easy.
Here’s a picture of the frame as it is setup. You simply attach each end to the headboard by inserting the hooks at the end of the side boards into the headboard.
Once the sideboards are connected to the headboard and footboard, you can then add the center supports. Thes just sit inside the N shape seen in the picture above.
Below you can see the rails installed. Make sure you plug in the headboard to an outlet at this point since it is easier to access. This will give you power to the USB ports on both sides of the bed.
The final step is adding the 3 base boards. They have cutouts for your hands to drop them into place easily.
Here’s what it looks like with all of them installed. There is no rattling as the are engineered very well and will make your mattress sit flush against the side rail.
Here’s a picture of the USB ports in the side of the bed:
This bed frame comes in 3 colors, Driftwood, which is the color I received, Acacia and Black. These colors are neutral to go with all types of decor and styles.
Conclusion
This is a quality bed frame that should last many years. It will work with memory foam and inner spring matttresses just fine. It has solid support to give you the best performance out of your mattress. I appreciate how sturdy it is and the fact that there are no bolts that could come loose or squeak over time. It is considerably more than many of the bed frames I have reviewed but the quality is there and it really shows.

Purple Platform Base Review

Purple has created a platform bed that according to their website can hold up to 4,600 lbs. Since the Purple bed only weighs 45 lbs. this is quite a feat! Below I show you how the Purple bed is constructed and how to set it up as well as how it compared to some of the other platform beds I have reviewed such as the Zinus.
Overview
The Purple platform bed retails for $174 for queen. It comes shipped in a box. Currently the deliver times vary. As of this writing they say 6-8 weeks. Below is a picture of the box.
Construction
Below are the highlights of the Purple base according to their website:
- Squeak-proof: Stays quiet no matter what shenanigans you get into
- High-profile: Lifts your bed 16.5” off the ground and gives you 15.5 vertical inches of under-bed storage
- Easy to move: Lightweight + simple set-up and take-down = easier moving or rearranging
- Lifetime Warranty: Your Platform is protected for life… it’s that good.
- No returns: Due to the nature of the product, there is no trial or return on the Purple™ Platform Base
Assembly
The Purple bed is relatively easy to assemble. Once you get it out of the box there is a small bag of screws and bolts.
Below are all the parts for the Purple bed frame. I bought the queen size and so there are two halves that get screwed together. The other small pieces on the floor are brackets to attach a headboard.
Below is a photo of the instructions which are fairly simple.
Setup was fairly easy but I ran into a snag with the connectors as seen below.
The problem I ran into was when I tried to move the base on end. the bolts sort of warped as I tried to turn the frame. Obviously this won’t be a problem if you setup the frame in the place where you intend to keep it but it was concerning.
Findings
Once I had everything setup the base felt very firm. Here’s a picture below of it all put together.
I like the fact that there is an attachment where you can add a headboard. There is also ample room for storage underneath.
Conclusion
This is a heavy duty bed and will definitely hold up for heavy people. However, there is no trial period for this bed frame so if you don’t like it you’re sort of out of luck. I think another option would be to consider the Zinus Smart Base Elite. It is also built heavy duty and retails for $130 for a queen size. In addition, you get a 30 day trial period.
Reverie 9T Adjustable Foundation Review

The Reverie 9T is THE most advanced adjustable base on the market. I can’t speak highly enough of Reverie as a company. Their products are very well built and all made in the USA. They have a team of engineers that are dedicated to improving and innovating adjustable bases.
I recently received a Reverie 9T for the Sleep Sherpa Showroom. I still use the previous model the 8T in my house and after over a year of use it still works like new. Below is a video overview of the 9T and a demo of it in action. What you see in the video is the Dream Supreme II Hybrid Sleep System.
The Dream Supreme hybrid mattress has both latex and foam. This creates a more conforming feel than the all latex version of their mattress. You still get the dream cells to configure however you want but it just feels softer and you get more hug out of the mattress. I prefer this version over the previous because of the overall benefits of foam.
Here are the specification of the hybrid mattress:
- Patented 6” DreamCell™ foam springs allow for dual firmness. Firmness level can be readjusted by rearranging foam springs. No motion transfer.
- Dream Supreme II Hybrid comfort layer features 1” OEKO-TEX® certified, graphite-infused Talalay latex with 2” CertiPUR-US® luxe memory foam underneath.
- Cashmere-blend woven cover finished with Feran Ice® wicks away moisture. Removable cover. Dry clean or spot clean only.
- Mattress construction facilitates natural airflow for maximum breathability and temperature regulation.
- 12” mattress height.
- OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 latex comfort layer and DreamCell foam springs. Naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant.
- CertiPUR-US® certified memory foam and RevTech™ foam. No VOCs or other harmful substances.
- Intertek® Quality Performance Mark. Exceeds third-party tests for industry-leading durability and craftsmanship.
- Available in the DreamTop™ (split head design) option.
- 10 year limited warranty.
- Designed to maximize compatibility with an adjustable power base.
You can buy the mattress or the adjustable base separately. Most mattresses you buy online will work with an adjustable base. There are some exceptions including
Here are the specs of the Reverie 9T as listed on their website:
The 9T™ is our most luxurious adjustable base with maximum technology and sleek styling.
- Sleek grey, deck-on-deck design: upholstered upper and wood look hard body lower.
- Infinite positions for head and foot, including presets for Zero Gravity, Anti-Snore and Flat and two extra programmable positions.
- Innovative lumbar support better aligns with spine and can be adjusted by degree
- Quiet, high-definition massage. 4 waves, 10 intensities.
- OLED remote with high resolution screen.
- Included portable wireless charging pad. Charge remote using built-in micro USB outlets.
- Bluetooth® Smart enabled
- Free Nightstand app for iOS. Can set Comfort Settings and Routines to run automatically.
- Under-the-bed LED nightlight
- ProGrip™ technology ensures consistent lumbar support while eliminating the need for retainer bars in most applications (retainer bars are still included).
- Fits within most bed frames and attaches to most headboards.
- Removable side rails for ultimate flexibility. Zero clearance.
- 850 lb weight limit.
- 20 year limited warranty.
- Available in: Twin XL 38″x80″, Full 54″x74″, Queen 60″x80″, Split California King (2 pc) 36”x84”
Findings
I have a split king size Reverie 9T. It is basically two twin xl bases that are placed together. The advantage of having it split is that each side can move independently. So, if one person wants to read, sleep or watch TV on an incline, the other person can lay flat and sleep.
In the picture below you can see towards the bottom where there is a flap on the base that extends upwards for lumbar support. This can completely transform the feel of a mattress, even a worn out one.
What makes the 9T a step up from previous versions is that when you go into zero gravity mode, you get better pressure relief. I also like the faux wood paneling along the side of the base. There’s really no need to encase the base in a bed frame. You can buy a headboard to go with the base as the 9T comes with a headboard adapter kit to complete the look.
The dream supreme hybrid mattress is one piece on the bottom and split at the top so that you feel more connected to your partner while sleeping. Reverie makes special sheets that will fit this type of mattress. As you can see one side is in the zero gravity position while the other is flat.
All mattresses that come in a box will work on an adjustable base which is almost all the mattresses I have reviewed on this site. Adjustable bases just aren’t for old people with health issues anymore. Bedrooms are starting to become a secondary office and being able to turn your bed into a zero gravity massage chair is a welcome upgrade, especially for people that may live in a house with no office.
Adjustable bases transform your bed into a very versatile piece of furniture that you will enjoy for years.
The split king Reverie 9T retails from $3,599. You can purchase one online through Nest Bedding.
Modway Horizon Bed Frame

I recently received the Horizon Bed Frame from Modway. This is a steel frame that is easy to assemble and very sturdy. It retails for $120 on Amazon. This base is a great choice for people looking for storage room underneath, no squeaks and sturdy enough to support 1,300 lbs.
Overview
Modway is a company that brings some of the latest styles to market at an extremely competitive price. Their products are often seen in television shows such as Modern Family. What I like about Modway is that they have a nicely curated lineup of products that all work well together. They have clean, modern designs that can really make a space look refreshed. This bed frame comes in different colors. For this review I received the green frame but you can also get it in the following colors:
Brown
Green
Gray
Blue
Red
Silver
White
Yellow
I found it interesting that they didn’t have a black option but the color certainly adds some interest. If you’re going for a minimalist bedroom look, this is a great option.
Specifications
- The queen size frame weighs 41 lbs.
- Dimensions: 60 x 80 x 14 inches
- Replaces bed frame and box Spring
- Sturdy powder coated Steel frame
- Generous 14” storage space
- Easy to assemble and fold away
- Non-marking foot caps
- Supports up to 1,300 lbs.
Assembly
Setting up the Horizon bed frame is a straight forward process. There aren’t that many bolts needed and it can be done by one person. Below is a picture of the bed once I set it up. It comes in two halves that fold. You unfold each half then bolt them together at the middle.
Here it is again from another angle. You can see that there are middle support legs.
Below you can see how it bolts together. There are also spacers that you put in between the two pieces so that it won’t squeak and have proper separation.
Conclusion
I have this frame in the Sleep Sherpa Showroom in Minneapolis and it has been holding up great with many people trying out the mattress on top of it. It certainly stands out with the green color and makes a statement so make sure to choose the color that will best match the look and feel of your room.
I really like these bases for people that want to have a modern, clean, minimalist look at a very affordable price. I think they are perfect for people who move frequently as they can be broken down easily and aren’t that heavy. They are also a great choice for people in apartments that need extra storage under their bed. There are other options out there for these types of frames but this one hasn’t had any issues with squeaking so far.
People that upgrade from a queen to a king will often ask if they need to get a new box spring as well. For the vast majority of mattresses you do not need a box spring. Instead of spending the money on a box spring you can get a bed frame like this which costs less than a box spring and is much more versatile.

The Zinus Platform Bed is a great value for the money. I bought a queen size bed for unboxing mattresses to review. This bed currently sells on Amazon for $217.54 for a queen. This bed has been featured in many of my mattress unboxing videos. What I especially like about it is that it is incredibly affordable and very easy to set up.
Shipping is free for Amazon Prime members and it should arrive in about 5 business days. There are other styles of this bed to choose from including the Zinus Deluxe Faux Leather and the Zinus Upholstered Tufted bed.
The bed will arrive in a flat box like the one below. There is an outer box as well to protect the inner box.
In order to set up the frame quickly, I recommend a socket wrench with an allen key attachment. It comes with an allen wrench but having a socket wrench makes it a bit faster.
All of the parts are located inside the headboard.Simply unzip the headboard and take everything out. You can then use the pack of the headboard for storage. You could put an extra set of sheets or blanket behind it.
This is what the inside looks like with all the parts in it:
To start you just connect the two metal frames together and intersect then attach the head and foot boards. The feet screw directly into the bottom.
The sides of the bed are inserted into the headboard or foot board and the cross-section of the middle frame. Everything is a nice snug fit which reinforces the entire bed and makes it sturdy. Below is a picture of what it looks like all put together.
The wooden slats come stapled together so that they are perfectly spaced. They come in two bundles and velcro directly to the sides of the bed. This way you don’t hear them at all and you don’t need to worry about them shifting around.
This is one of the easiest beds I have assembled. Even easier than an Ikea bed. It also just looks great. Since it’s such a simple design, the bed is very versatile for design. It makes for a great bed for a guest room if not your master bedroom. It’s also relatively light and easy to disassemble so it can be easily transported. If you have a temporary living situation or have kids going off to college this would be a good choice, especially since you can have it delivered directly to your destination.
I love my Zinus bed. It would be a great addition to any mattress in a box that you purchase, especially since if you order them at the same time they should also arrive at about the same time too! Because it is a slat system, it will work most of the mattresses I have reviewed on my site and definitely all memory foam mattresses. No need for a box spring. The other advantage is that a slat system will allow your memory foam mattress to breathe a bit more. Soon I will be reviewing some of the Zinus mattress collection which are also very affordably priced.
The link below will get you 10% off your entire order at Zinus.com. If you shop direct from Zinus you get the freshest inventory and they will also price match any other advertised price. You also get all the benefits of the Zinus warranty and hassle-free returns.

Signature Sleep Ultra Steel Bunkie Board
Recently updated on March 17th, 2017 at 04:55 pm
Editor’s Note: This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. For full details visit the disclosures page.
What is a bunkie board? A bunkie board is simply a solid, firm base to properly support a mattress. Many people still own a steel bed frame without slats. These frames were designed for a box spring to go on top of them. However if you have a newer mattress, they are not compatible with an old box spring and need a firm surface. A bunkie board is an inxepensive and simple solution for a newer bed without having to buy a new box spring. Usually bunkie boards are used if you want a lower profile and don’t want the extra height that a box spring provides.
I purchased a bunkie board for my 5 year old son’s room because the existing setup with a box spring made the bed a little too high. He sometimes falls out of bed so a lower profile setup would make things safer.
Often readers ask me to recommend a bunkie board or box spring and I wanted to test some out first hand before making any recommendations. If you look on Amazon you will find that the Signature Sleep brand gets good reviews so I decided to try out their bunkie board.
Ordering
You can buy the Signature Sleep bunkie board directly from Amazon. It qualifies for Amazon Prime shipping so will arrive in 2 days. The twin size comes in a box like this:
The frame comes in 2 pieces that slide into each other. Inside of the frame is the padded cover that you slide on.
Installation requires two bolts to screw each side together. An allen wrench is also included
The cover has two zippers and it slips over the frame. It was surprisingly easy to get this on.
Here’s what the bunkie board looks like fully put together.
The next step was getting it on my son’s bed. Here’s what the bed looked like before the bunkie board with a traditional box spring. This box spring is at least 30 years old which affected the performance of the mattress.
When I put the bunkie board on the bed, it didn’t fall into place easily. I had to stand on one side to squeeze it into place. I’m not sure if this was due to the fact that the cover added some extra width or it was designed that way so it wouldn’t move around and make noise. Regardless, I was able to make it fit and it made the bed more secure.
Finally, this is what it looks like with the new bunkie board on the bed. It now has a lower profile and just looks nicer. I didn’t notice any creaking or noises and appreciate the cloth cover that prevents any metal on metal noises.
A few last things to note about this product. According to the manufacturer, Signature Sleep, the weight limit for this is 225 lbs.
In conclusion I am happy with this purchase and would certainly recommend it to people looking to replace an older box spring or just give their bed a lower profile. A bunkie board is also a nice alternative to wooden slats. at $90 it’s a good price for a sturdy product.
You can purchase it direct from Amazon.
