Essential Factors For Picking The Best Bed Risers

In your search for the best risers in the market, you will come across several options to choose from. But you need to weigh your decision based on certain factors. These are as follows –

Constructions or Type

Bed risers are available in wood, plastic, and metal material. While solid wood offers a stable base with minimal possibility of collapse, heavy-duty plastic is relatively cost-effective with a lower possibility of breakdown.

This indicates that if you want to go for sturdier options, then you need to spend more to ensure the safety and security of you and your family members.

People raise their beds for several reasons. They might have some health issues which make it difficult for them to get in and out of a low height bed, or they want just enough space for storing flat items, or they might even be looking to enhance the storage space of their room.

The height requirement for each of these conditions will vary depending on the specific needs of the users. Therefore, when searching for the best bed risers, keep your customization requirements in mind so that you can make the right choice.

The best bed risers in the market emphasize function over form. At a low budget, you are unlikely to find anything that looks attractive and appealing. But the best part is that you can always cover them up with a bed skirt.

Risk of Scratch

In an attempt to raise your bed, you would not want to damage your floor. Keeping this in mind, the best bed risers are designed to provide adequate protection to carpet and wooden floors from dents and scratches.

The last but not the least consideration is the cost of the bed risers. While most of these products do not quote a high price, you must ensure that you get a true return for your investment. Moreover, keep in mind that the costlier ones are more likely to be durable and sturdy.

Some Basic Buying Tips

In your hunt for the best bed risers in the market, you need to address a few questions to make your search process easier. Ask yourself –

  • Why do you need to raise your bed?
  • How much do you need to raise your bed?
  • What is your priority – cost or durability?

To find the best bed risers in the market, consider essential factors like safety concerns, your personal needs, and aesthetic preferences, alongside your budget constraint. Conducting proper research based on such parameters will surely help you find the right product for your job.

Raycop RS2 Mattress Vaccuum

The Raycop RS2 HEPA Allergen Vaccuum is an excellent furniture and mattress cleaner

The Raycop RS2 mattress vacuum is one of the neatest mattress accessories I have come across in a long time. This little device is the number 1 selling allergen vaccum in Japan. It retails for about $349.99 on Amazon. In a nutshell it works by creating vibrations to loosen any debris and allergens on your upholstered surfaces such as mattress, couch, chairs and even drapes. Then a UV light kills bacteria and viruses. Finally the vacuum sweeps and sucks up the debris into the vaccuum and traps it in a HEPA filter.

Ordering and Unboxing the Raycop RS2

If you order the RS2 via Amazon you get free Prime shipping. It will arrive in a regular cardboard box but inside that box is one like this:

Raycop RS2

When you unbox it you get the vaccuum, 2 filters, a brush to help clean the filter, a microfiber cloth to keep it shiny and a stand for storage:

raycop packaging

Here’s a breakdown of everything you get in the box:

Here’s an overview of how the Vaccuum works according to their website:

RAYCOP uses a powerful UV lamp with a wavelength calibrated to effectively eliminate over 99% of bacteria from fabric surfaces throughout the home. UV light is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than visible light. UV can be separated into various ranges, with short-wavelength UV (UVC) considered “germicidal UV.” The UV light in RAYCOP allergen vacuums is 253.7nm, which eliminates viruses and bacteria, and suppresses the movement of dust mites. UV light also alters the DNA of dust mite eggs and significantly reduces egg hatch rates.

A variety of bacteria and viruses are frequently brought back home from public places such as schools, gyms and offices. Two of the most common bacteria found living in our beds are E-Coli and Staphylococcus. Laboratory tests show that approximately 2 seconds of exposure to UV light can eliminate 99.9% of these bacteria. The H1N1 virus has also been found on mattresses and 99.9% can be eliminated after approximately 5 seconds of exposure to UV light.

Tests conducted on E-Coli, Staph and H1N1.

The combination of suction and vibration, along with UV light, in our patented RayClean Technology® is proven to eliminate 3 times more allergens than a regular vacuum. Even though you don’t realize they are there, dust mites can be found in every corner of our home, including bedding, sofas, chairs, and even curtains. Dust mites leave behind trails of allergenic waste as they move. This waste that they produce gets trapped in your fabrics and is difficult to remove with a regular vacuum. Every RAYCOP has pulsating pads to loosen and lift particles and suction calibrated to be powerful enough to effectively remove debris and allergens from fabric surfaces yet is gentle enough to safely use on delicate fabrics without tugging or trapping the fabric. These particles also pass through a dual filtration system: larger particles are trapped in the dust box filter and microscopic particles are trapped in the HEPA filter so they can’t be released back into the air.

Below is a video of me using the Raycop RS2 on a mattress we have had in the Sleep Sherpa mattress store in Minneapolis. Check out the amount of gunk I get after just one sweep.

I honestly didn’t expect this vaccuum to pick up so much stuff. It was a little shocking and I am super glad I received one. I am now going to start having staff clean our mattresses on a weekly basis using this vaccuum.

Here’s a picture of what I got out of the mattress. Keep in mind that this was a brand new filter and the other side of the filter was just as dirty.

raycop filter

The filters are similar to a regualr HEPA filter you find in a normal size vaccuum. You can rinse them out and air dry them and they are ready to reuse. You get 2 filters with your RS2 so you can always have one at the ready for cleaing while the other dries.

My Raycop RS2 Recommendation

I didn’t realize how dirty a mattress can actually get. I normally recommend a mattress protector to keep you mattress clean. However a mattress protector can affect the feel of a mattress, especially dense foam mattresses that are known for excellent contouring. So if you want to to go without a mattres protector to get the full feel of your mattress, I would strongly advise investing in this device to keep you mattress sanitary.

Bedjet Review: Stay Cool or Warm in Bed for Less

I was given a Bedjet V2 Climate Control system with Biorhythm Sleep Technology. I first became aware of the Bedjet through the show Shark Tank on NBC. The Bedjet blows conditioned air under your sheets to keep you cool or warm. I recently was given the latest version that allows you to schedule how long it runs and at what temperature to create an optimal microclimate between your sheets. Since their debut on Shark Tank a few years ago, the technology has evolved and now you can control your Bedjet with your smartphone through a dedicated app.

Overview of the Bedjet

The concept of the Bedjet is simple. If you sleep hot or cold, this device will blow conditioned air into your bed to help warm you up or cool you down. There are many devices available to help keep you warm at night. Everything from more blankets to a heated mattress pad can be had at a reasonable price. However, there aren’t that many products designed to keep you cool.

Here’s an overview of what it does:

The WinkBed recently introduced the Climate Cool system but that is a proprietary technology that only works with their mattress. The Bedjet is a great solution for hot sleepers but is also accommodating for people that want to warm up fast on a cold winter night.

The V2 model that I received retails for $369 when buying directly from their website you also get a 60-day money back trial with free returns. It is also available to purchase on Amazon but it retails there for $399 and only comes with a 30 day trial period plus the cost of return shipping.

Specifications and Features

Below are the main features of the Bedjet as listed on their website.

  • BedJet cooling is awesome relief for stuffy bedrooms, hot sleepers, night sweats and hot flashes. Cooling mode power ventilates your bed, using room temperature air to wick out body heat and body moisture nearly instantly, is felt within 10 seconds. NOTE: BedJet is not an air conditioner and not a substitute for zero air conditioning in extreme heat (80 degree+) bedrooms. Room temp needs to be below 79 degrees for best cooling.
  • Night sweat management mode is proven to reduce body moisture to keep you dry and comfortable
  • Optional AirComforter sheet recommended for improved cooling air distribution.
  • Powerful warming makes cold feet a thing of the past. Forget bundling up with heavy pajamas for chilly winter beds and give your bedding that toasty hot sauna feeling in just seconds.  Program thermostat regulated bed temperature by degree, from 72 to 104 degrees.
  • New BedJet V2 model includes essential oil Aromatherapy diffuser kit. Enjoy the therapeutic soothing effects of scented aromatherapy and freshen your sheets when running the BedJet.
  • Dual zone temperature upgrade available for independent cooling/warming of each half of the bed (See Dual Zone)
  • Save money on utilities — why heat/cool the whole house vs. just your bed?
  • No wires, no tubes, no electricity in the bed and no mattress pads to sleep on top of, no water to leak, lifetime washable air filter
  • Fits underneath any bed with 7″ space, side rail clearance only needs to be 3.5″, adjustable bed approved
  • 60-day love it or return it guarantee, free return shipping (USA), fast 100% refunds with no restocking fees

My Bedjet Findings

Setting up the Bedjet was much easier than I thought it would be. I actually delayed installing it thinking it would be a chore. It is super simple. You basically just plug it in then connect the hose to the end of your bed and power it on. Not only is it easy to setup but it also is easy to take down and store. If you only want to use it in the summer or winter, it won’t take up much space under your bed.

Here’s a picture of all the parts in the box:

Bedjet Box Parts

To install it to your bed, all you need to do is put the plastic mounting bracket underneath your mattress then attach the hose to the bracket. notice that I can fit the entire system underneath my bed. If your bed is too low, you can get a bracket to mount the system horizontally so that it takes up less space.

bedjet installation

Here’s a picture that shows the unit mounted horizontally:

Horizontal Bedjet

So, how does it work? Once setup, you can control how warm or cool you want to make your bed. I tried the cooling feature right away and found relief in under a minute. During the Summer I still like to have at least a sheet covering me but the drawback is that it traps heat. The Bedjet can subtly blow cool air into your bed so that you will feel cool but get the comfort and security that a blanket provides.

Even if you have air conditioning you may find that your face can get cold while your body heats up under the sheets. The Bedjet helps to keep the temperature inside your bed more consistent with the outside temperature when you want to cool down.

Conversely, the heating option will warm you up where you need it most, your feet! An article published in the scientific journal Nature found that warm feet will promote the rapid onset of sleep. Since this device sits at the foot of your bed, your feet will be the first to warm up.

The Biorhythm sleep technology allows you to change the intensity of the Bedjet throughout the night. It comes with some pre-programmed settings that you can then tweak. For example, it can warm up your bed right away with more intense heat to start then cool down a little after you have warmed up then warm up again in the morning to help wake you up.

If you buy the Dual Zone system, you get two Bedjets that each control one side of the bed. In order to keep the climates at differing temperatures, they created a special comforter that has two chambers to hold the conditioned air.

bedjet air comforter

My Bedjet Recommendation

Having used many other products that help cool or heat your bed, I think the Bedjet is one of the best solutions for people that tend to sleep hot. Mattress manufacturers will add cooling gel or phase change technology to a mattress to help draw away heat but that is sometimes a temporary effect. The Bedjet keeps things cool between the sheets but it doesn’t feel like a fan is blowing right on you unless you put it at the highest setting. Additionally, the warming feature would help you fall asleep faster when you are cold. Whether or not you use it to heat or cool, I like how it blows fresh air into your bed. People that tend to sweat at night will find some much-needed relief with this product.

Does a White Noise Machine Improve Sleep?

Are you someone who finds it difficult to fall asleep in a noisy environment? You are not the only one – a lot of people struggle to fall asleep when it is not quiet, unlike those lucky ones who can sleep right through a tornado.  So what do you do if there is traffic noise outside or the dog next door is barking all night and keeping you awake? If you have problems falling asleep or tend to wake up easily during the night, white noise may be just the answer you are looking for.

What is White Noise?

So what is white noise? To put it simply, white noise is a special type of sound that masks all other background sounds. It helps in drowning out sounds which might be keeping you from falling asleep when it is used as a way to promote good sleep. Genuine white noise cannot be generated in any other way than electronically, and it sounds a little like radio or TV static.  Because it contains a high amount of high-frequency energy, pure white noise is not every pleasant to the ears.

In some cases, the term is used as a general description for any type of noise that is constant and unchanging. White noise has become a colloquial term for a wide range of different sounds, including:

  • Machinery sounds – washing machine, air conditioners, etc.
  • Nature sounds – waves/ sea, rain, jungle, crickets chirping, etc.
  • Ambient soundscapes – crowd noise, a crackling campfire, aircraft interior, etc.

Some people, when trying to fall asleep, prefer listening to these types of sounds rather than the harsh tone of genuine white noise. White noise machines are highly recommended by sleep specialists to help people who find it difficult to fall asleep or are awakened easily while they are sleeping during the night.

Do White Noise Machines Really Work?

Nowadays, you will find a wide range of white noise machines available on the market. Also known as sound conditioners or sleep sound machines, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes – from cutting-edge ‘sleep sound systems’ to low-tech, affordable options.

Let us take a quick look at how white noise machines work. When you think about it, it may sound counterintuitive to add more noise in your bedroom to help you sleep when the noise is exactly the reason you cannot sleep. However, white noise works because it has the ability to blend external sounds (traffic, barking dogs, etc.) into the overall background noise, and therefore, your brain pays less attention.

According to experts, it is not necessarily the volume of the sound that keeps you awake but its context. This is why some people can fall asleep in a noisy nightclub. Similarly, a startle response can be set off by a distant barking dog even if you are asleep and unconscious.

When white noise, or a similar sound, is added to your sleeping environment, you are using a principal that is known as sound masking. Instead of drowning out the sounds that are keeping you awake, the frequencies of the white noise signal “masks” them.

White noise machines produce a sound that masks the external sounds that prevent you from falling asleep. Studies have shown that these machines can benefit problem sleepers. If you prefer, you can also use nature sounds, etc. the same way you use white noise so that you can relax and drift off to sweet slumber.

Other White Noise Solutions

If you would rather not spend money on a white noise machine, there are other ways to create white noise, such as:

  • A fan: If you have a standard table fan at home, you can use it to mask external sounds. Its whirr is quite ideal for sound masking.
  • An old boom box or radio: Anything that comes with an FM tuner should work well. Just break the antenna or dial in between stations to create pink noise, which is a variant of white noise that has been shown to work effectively as a sleep aid.
  • An app: A smartphone is one of the easiest ways to try out white noise to help you sleep. You will find countless apps – both free and paid – that are designed to help improve your sleep. However, keep in mind that some free apps use low-quality sounds that could turn out to be irritating rather than soothing and relaxing.

White noise machines are an excellent investment if you have a serious sleeping problem and do not want to depend on sleeping pills. As mentioned, there are numerous types of white noise machines to suit any budget, so you will definitely find the right one to help you sleep. Say goodbye to sleepless nights.

My favorite sound machine is the Marpac Sound Machine. It plays a nice analog sound that can be adjusted with a dial. They are very durable and really drown out ambient noises. Check out my full review of the Marpac Sound Machine.

Lucimed Luminette Light Therapy Glasses

Recently updated on February 8th, 2017 at 02:56 pm

If you have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) or just crave sunlight in the depths of winter, you’re not alone. An effective way to combat the symptoms of SAD is through light therapy. Sitting in front of a full spectrum light when you wake up has been shown to alleviate some of the symptoms of SAD because it simulates day light and can help reset your circadian rhythm. A new company called Luminette has a portable light therapy solution that in my opinion is one of the best in the market.

According to the Mayo Clinic, these are the following symptoms associated with Seasonal Affective Disorder:

  • Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day
  • Feeling hopeless or worthless
  • Having low energy
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Having problems with sleeping
  • Experiencing changes in your appetite or weight
  • Feeling sluggish or agitated
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Having frequent thoughts of death or suicideThe Mayo Clinic has further broken down SAD symptoms by particular season as it doesn’t just occur in the Winter.  Below are the particular symptoms for SAD during the Fall and Winter months:
  • Irritability
  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Problems getting along with other people
  • Hypersensitivity to rejection
  • Heavy, “leaden” feeling in the arms or legs
  • Oversleeping
  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
  • Weight gainSpring and Summer Seasonal Affective disorder is associated with the following symptoms:
  • Depression
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Weight loss
  • Poor appetite
  • Agitation or anxiety

I recently received a set of Lucimed Luminette light therapy glasses to help combat the symptoms of SAD. I received them in January and they couldn’t have come at a better time as we are now in the depths of winter in Minnesota and there is very little daylight.

I have reviewed other light therapy glasses in the past and really like the concept of them as glasses as opposed to a light because it frees you up to do other tasks around the house instead of being tied to a particular location.

Below is a video unboxing of the Luminette glasses.

Here’s what you get with the glasses. A nice carrying case to protect them from getting damaged, the glasses themselves, a micro usb cable and charger as well as a microfiber cloth cleaner.

Here’s another shot on my dining room table.

luminette glasses

To charge the glasses you just plug the micro usb cable directly into the back of the glasses then to an outlet with the included charger.

Here’s a close up shot of the connection and the lights.

Below is a picture of the glasses turned on. As you can see there is a mirror on the glasses that reflect the light. There is a thin piece of plastic film that protects the mirror which you can remove, just make sure you don’t remove the mirror itself.

Here are the details of the glasses according to their Amazon listing:

  • Luminette is for those who are active in the morning and who don’t have time to sit down in front of a light therapy box. They can be worn while carrying on with your daily morning routine
  • Thanks to its patented illumination system Luminette provides ideal eyes exposure while keeping vision free. If you wear glasses or contact lenses you can use Luminette® without them impacting your vision or comfort
  • The light emitted is a blue-enriched white light. It comes with 3 intensities (500, 1,000 and 1,500 lux). An independent clinical trial has demonstrated that Luminette is equivalent to an 10,000 lux lamp
  • Luminette is rechargeable by micro-usb cable; one charge gives autonomy for 10 sessions. Supplied with a US-plug charger
  • Luminette is manufactured in Belgium. Luminette has been safely used by more than 50,000 users since 2006. Luminette is certified as “zero-risk” device according to european standard IEC 62471 on photobiological safety

So how did the Luminette glasses work? They are easy to operate and effective for me too! I keep them by my nightstand so that I can put them on in the morning. I make sure to charge them every night but if I skip a day it doesn’t matter as the battery will last. I like that I can go about my tasks in the morning without having to be parked near a dedicated light. You don’t need to wear them for long. About 20-30 minutes is plenty to get you the benefits. I also appreciate the space saving aspect. They fit in my nightstand and don’t stand out like a normal light therapy lamp would.

Living so far north in Minneapolis, we experience not only extremes in temperatures but also in daylight. People really slow down over the winter months and it’s hard to find the energy to get outside or even visit friends. During the summer months it’s the opposite where everyone is out and we maximize our daylight.

Having the luminette at the ready helps even out the ups and downs that the seasons in Minnesota bring.

You can try out the Luminette to see if it is right for you via their rental program. You can rent the glasses for a month for $39. If you decide you don’t like them you can let the company know and they will allow you to ship it back to them. If you decide you like them and want to keep them, you just pay the cost of the glasses minus the $39 you already paid for the rental.

The Luminette glasses can be purchased on Amazon and retail for $199. Expect to get many years of use out of these glasses and keep them in mind as the season change to keep you on an even keel.

Sleepy Kneez Pillow Review 3

Sleepy Kneez Pillow Review

Recently updated on April 26th, 2017 at 12:23 pm

Side sleepers sometimes have issues with sore knees when they sleep. This is because their knees often lay on top of each other without any padding. A common solution to this is using a pillow in between your legs as a cushion. However, pillows are often too big and too thick which leads to a different kind of discomfort.

A new invention called Sleepy Kneez is the solution many side sleepers have been looking for. The video below give a great overview of the pillow and how it can benefit side sleepers.

You can order the Sleepy Kneez pillow direct from the company website.  for $34.95 plus shipping. Your product should arrive fairly quickly, usually in about a week after placing your order. If you want even better pressure relief, there’s a memory foam version of the Sleepy Kneez pillow which costs $69.99. They even offer a gel pack for sale for $9.99 which is made to fit in the Sleepy Kneez pillow pocket. It can be frozen to help treat knee injuries.

It comes in a package like you see below:

sleepy kneez

I don’t often sleep on my side as I’m more of a stomach sleeper. However when if I take a short nap in the afternoon, I try to sleep on my side. This prevents me from getting too cozy and reluctant to get out of bed. I tried this pillow during a nap and found it easy to put on. It has a velcro strap that you wrap around your leg. I found it to be comfortable over my jeans and expect it would be just as comfortable over pajamas. I think wearing on my bare leg would take some getting used to.

Here’s a photo that shows the velcro strap. Notice that the pillow isn’t all that big which is the main selling point. The goal is to not notice it while you’re sleeping. Also, because it’s attached to your knee, you don’t need to move it with you when you change positions. This is a problem if you use a regular pillow.

sleepy kneez pillow

If this pillow works, you can expect to wear it every night which means it should be washed regularly along with all your other bed linens. You can remove the pillow from the cover and wash it. Below are the care instructions that come with it.

Sleepy Kneez provides just the right amount of comfort for your aching knees. It helps with spinal alignment and because it is much smaller than a pillow, makes it easier to move around at night. You can also pack it easily for travel so you can enjoy it on the road.

Another item of note is that Sleepy Kneez has also been recognized by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

After reviewing hundreds of sleep products, I have come to find that if you have a particular discomfort while sleeping, chances are someone has invented a solution already. The problem has been knowing that it even exists. I hope many uncomfortable side sleepers out there find comfort in Sleepy Kneez. As I age, I notice that it’s always minor discomforts that keep me up at night.

If you find that your bed is a bit too stiff for your taste these days, you may want to consider a mattress topper. It’s a much more economical choice as opposed to buying a new mattress. I often encourage readers who have only slept on inner springs and are mulling a memory foam mattress to get a feel for a memory foam mattress with a memory foam topper. The biggest lament I hear about transitioning from innerspring to foam is the loss of bounce. Getting a memory foam topper for your existing innerspring give you a taste of what to expect.

The second most asked question about transitioning from inner spring to memory foam is do they sleep hot? The answer to that question is it really comes down to the construction and layering of the foam and most importantly what type of foam is used. If you buy a mattress or topper with cooling gel, it will dramatically help with temperature regulation.

If you’re looking for a mattress topper that will give you the right amount of support and cushioning as well as keep you cool, check out the Isolus mattress topper from Malouf. This 2.5″ mattress topper is infused with a cooling gel that will help regulate your temperature throughout the night.

This mattress topper Utilizes a pin-core design which means that the gel memory foam is ventilated to increase air flow and regulate sleeping temperature. The memory foam quickly contours to your body to cradle you just right. Anything thicker than this would most likely mean you need to get a new mattress.

Here’s the Malouf mattress topper on my latex bed.

Malouf mattress topper

It is encased in a soft bamboo cover that is removable and washable. Bamboo is another textile that will keep you cool and is popping up in many new bedding products.

Below is a picture of the back of the mattress topper. There are tiny studs that will grip the mattress so it won’t shift or slide around at night. The Isolus did a great job of staying in place.

mattress topper slides

A queen size Isolus mattress topper costs $349.00. This may seem like a lot but it is a very high quality mattress topper and is less than half the cost of a new mattress. If your mattress is still giving you proper support but you find that it is too hard, I would have you strongly consider a topper over a new mattress.

Malouf was started among a couple in an apartment that had a passion for finding the best quality bedding products and making them accessible to everyone. The brand has since then exploded in to an international company. Their commitment to quality remains the same and it shows through this mattress topper. Get it here.

If you are considering making the leap from an inner spring to memory foam mattress you need make sure that you have a proper frame that will support you and the weight of the mattress adequately over time. A frame I highly recommend is the Ironwood Bed Frame. It is very sturdy yet portable and super easy to assemble. The frame arrives in a box not much bigger than a typical bed in a box. This means if you have narrow hallways to get through, you can maneuver easily and setup the frame inside the room.

As you can see below the entire contents of the frame come in one package. This is a queen size frame.

If you have ever put together an Ikea piece of furniture the process is just as easy if not easier. Total setup time takes about 30 minutes. Notice that you also get a fabric cover for the frame.

Below is a picture of what the bed frame looks like after setup.

Knock Down

I was surprised at how hard it was to find a good bed frame for my bed. You can get wood cut from Home Depot in order to make slats but the problem is that the wood in the dimensions you need is of poor quality and will likely split. Additionally, many of the frames you get in some of the brick & mortar mattress stores are of poor quality and will affect how you sleep.

These bed frames will support up to 1,200 lbs. in weight. No need to worry about sagging or breaking the bed during nighttime activities. You can rest easy knowing you are properly supported.

The Ironwood  bed frames are only sold in select stores throughout the country so the easiest way to get them online through an affiliated retailer. Right now you can get them via their website. A queen size runs about $300. I have seen similar foundations north of $500, same type of construction and size.

I highly recommend this Ironwood for quality and durability. Best of all this frame is portable. If you find yourself moving frequently, it’s easy to take apart and move.

I recently wrote about the Danican mattress and it’s superior cooling properties. The Danican company also makes mattress and pillow protectors as part of their bedding ensemble. Danican has roots in Denmark and recently set up shop in America, hence the name Danican. They are offering some very nice quality products and their pillow protector is something that you should seriously consider if you have recently invested in a new pillow.

The Danican Nature Protect pillow protector is made from a blend of bamboo and cotton. The bamboo gives it an extra soft feel and helps the protector to breath, keeping you cool.  It’s machine washable and just screams quality. It is dust mite, allergen and bed bug proof.

One frustration I have with cheap pillow protectors is that they can be noisy due to the use of cheap plastics or it feels like you are sleeping on a rubber sheet and wake up sweaty. The Danican pillow protector is not noisy at all. It also has a very nice zipper along the length of the pillow making it easy to wash and put back on.

A nice use beyond having a pillow protector at home is to use it for travel. One reason I don’t sleep well at hotels is that in the back of my mind I’m wondering how clean the pillows are. Having a Danican pillow protector solves that problem Just zip it over a hotel pillow and sleep directly on it. No need for a pillow case as it is really is soft enough to use without one. Just don’t forget it when you check out!

As I’ve said before with other bedding products, it doesn’t make sense to invest in a quality mattress or pillow only to have it lose performance due to inferior bedding that traps heat, is itchy or noisy. The Danican Nature Protect pillow protector is definitely something to consider when building your dream bed.

I have a 4 year old son who is a great sleeper, once you get him to sleep. Our bedtime ritual has never been easy or consistent. Our 7 year old daughter knows the drill and for the most part will brush teeth and put on pajamas without much fuss. In the past we have tried rewards before bedtime like reading a story with mom or dad but it still was hard. Either he would wander out of his room and disrupt his sister or go downstairs to ask for water.

I was recently sent a sleep reward chart from The Victoria Chart Company that is a wonderful solution to the dreaded bedtime battles.

Each Good Night, Sleep Tight Reward Chart system includes:

  • 1 large chart (17 inches L x 11 inches W)
  • 1 dry erase pen
  • 48 gold star reward stickers
  • 130 multi-colored smiley face reward stickers
  • An informational sheet with examples, tips and guidelines
  • Adhesive mounting pads to display your child’s accomplishments

All of our stickers are reusable but gentle handling is recommended.

Sleep Stickers

We put the chart right above his bed. He took to the chart right way. Apart from getting him to bed we also needed him to stay in bed and sleep until a reasonable hour. He used to get up at 4:30 am and wake us but now he either attempts to go back to sleep or plays in his room, knowing that a sticker is awaiting!

Sleep Chart for Kids

The Sleep Reward Chart is a great tool that teaches your children how to establish a bedtime routine, I highly recommend it. You can get it from for $14.95. What that really buys you is stress free and fun bed times with your children. Since the stickers are reusable it can be used when younger siblings are of age.

If you’re a frequent flyer or road tripper, you will find that a simple sleep mask just wont do. You often need noise blocking in addition to light blocking. Enter the Dreamcatcher and Nap Star. A patented sleep system that blocks noise and light that also has embedded padding to help you sleep just about anywhere.

The Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher by dreamcloud rpoductions
The Dreamcatcher is the more heavy duty of the two sleep systems. It is a bit wider than the Nap Star and just plain bigger which equals more padding and more coverage of your head and face. I would recommend this for people serious about blocking as much ambient stimulation as possible. The Dreamcatcher also contains a hidden pocket where you can put your credit card and other valuables, sort of like a second money belt.

They also come with a pack of earplugs to maximize noise reduction. I found that they didn’t block as much sound as I would have liked but adding the earplugs was a great addition. Wrapping the mask over your ears also helps to keep the earplugs in secure so they don’t fall out when changing positions.

I enjoyed the sensation of these products. You get a nice sense of security while wearing them sort of like you are tucking yourself under your sheets. They also add a bit of warmth which is perfect when you are traveling on a plane which tends to get cold, especially during the night.

The Nap Star

The Nap Star has all the benefits of the Dreamcatcher but on a smaller scale. You can use the Nap Star without the sleep mask and just wear the surrounding padding for added comfort when reading or relaxing. Below is a video detailing how to wear these products as well as all their features.

While I didn’t find the padding all that useful for blocking sound, it did provide nice comfort and I could see this coming in handing on a plane ride or long car trip as a wearable pillow.

For the price, it is a worthwhile product. If you’re looking for true noise blocking you will want to make sure you have earplugs. A package of earplugs comes with each of these products.

As a bonus these products come with signage to put on your Dreamcatcher or Nap Star such as:

“Please Do Not Disturb”
“Will Wake for Food”
“Please Wake for All Refreshments”

A clever touch that will ensure you never miss a request from a flight attendant.

If you’re travelling to parts unknown and aren’t sure what your accommodations will be like, you definitely should consider bringing a Nap Star or Dreamcatcher.

Let the Sleep Shepherd Put You to Sleep 1

Let the Sleep Shepherd Put You to Sleep

I’ll admit it, at first I was very skeptical. A hat that puts you to sleep? Measure’s your brain waves? Say what? When I showed it to my wife she started laughing. It wasn’t until I started reading more about this invention that I grew interested in conducting a Sleep Shepherd Review

The Sleep Shepherd is the invention of Dr. Michael Larson. He has a PhD from MIT in Mechanical Engineering so he certainly knows how to make stuff. He has many patents and also started other companies such as Innovention Toys, LLC.  In addition he teaches seminars on how to be a more creative individual and how to foster a creative culture in your workplace.

The Sleep Shepherd was created out of necessity. Apparently Michael’s daughter was having trouble sleeping and it was affecting other parts of her life. As any parent knows, having your child take any prescription drugs can be worrisome due to potential side effects.

How it Works

The Sleep Shepherd has sensors inside that read your brain waves in real time and can detect if they correlate to an awake state or sleeping state and then guides them to a lower frequency which is induces sleepiness.

Sleep Hat

The sound is a sort of medium pitched tone that gives you a sort of rocking sensation as you turn it on and lay down. I turned the volume high enough that I could hear it clearly but that it wasn’t so loud that it distracted me from relaxing. It may take a couple nights to find your optimal volume. Once the batter is fully charged you can start using it right away.

Below is a video of Michael Larson explaining the Sleep Shepherd.

The Sleep Shepherd comes in some sleek packaging along with great instructions and a charging cable so that you don’t need to scramble looking for a spare USB cable to get started.

The Sleep Shepherd is fits comfortably and comes in 3 sizes. Make sure you measure you head circumference before ordering so that you get the right size. You want to make sure that the sensors are aligned properly for the device to work. It retails for $149.

Setup is extremely easy, just charge it fully with the included USB charger and once it’s fully charged put it on before bed, turn the power on and adjust the volume as needed. After that, the Sleep Shepherd does all the work.

My first 3 nights using it, I noticed that it timed out after about 15-20 minutes. I spoke with Michael about this and he said that there is a very small percentage of people, about 5% whose brainwaves do not respond well with this device. I don’t know whether to take that as a compliment or maybe a polite way of saying my default mode is a bit slow?

I have been wearing this for the past week now and have noticed that sometimes it will last longer than 20 minutes. However, to get a more thorough review, I had my wife and a friend try the device and report back on their experience.

My friend really likes it. He is also a mechanical engineer and thought it was a sound product, lol. My wife eventually came around to the idea of wearing a device like this after she saw me wearing it. She likes it too and we both notice a sort of rocking sensation when it is on. Sort of like someone is rocking you to sleep. It’s reassuring to know that it also turns itself off after you fall asleep. No need to worry about wearing out the batter prematurely or waking up to an unfamiliar sound.

The one minor concern I have is that the LED light can be a bit bright in a dark room. To remedy this, I just put a piece of electrical tape over it. However, a future version of the product may want to include some sort of built in cover that can be opened and closed as needed. As the person wearing it you won’t notice it much but your partner may get annoyed depending on your sleep position.

If you suffer from insomnia or just have trouble falling asleep within a reasonable amount of time at night, this could be a game changer for you. I occasionally take melatonin to help me fall asleep but I am always on the look out for an all natural sleep aid. I notice if I take melatonin for 2 or 3 consecutive days I build up a tolerance. With the Sleep Shepherd, you really can’t build up a tolerance to relaxing sounds. It can be a big investment at $149 but it also means you may never need to buy sleeping pills again.

The Sleep Shepherd comes with a 30 day no risk money back guarantee. So if you find that for whatever reason, it isn’t for you. You can get a full refund.

I truly think that the Sleep Shepherd is a glimpse into the future of sleep therapy. Even if you don’t have a diagnosed sleep issue, it is still a very nice tool for sleep hackers, shift workers and those that just want to fall asleep faster.

Instead of using a pill that can have all sorts of side effects, the Sleep Shepherd targets your brain through environmental stimulation in a safe manner.

Get the Sleep Shepherd via Amazon.

While searching for innovative travel pillows, I stumbled across a product called, Nap Anywhere. It’s not really even a pillow, instead, its a sort of cushioned head rest that allows you to rest your head to the side without relying on a wall or some external support. It came with a some really cool packaging…

nap anywhere1

The Nap Anywhere device comes flat and to make it work you need to bend it in two directions so that one side rests on your shoulder and the other on your neck.

nap anyhwere review 3

Bending it was easy, it doesn’t require much strength and the beauty of it is that it can be bent flat again for convenient storage. It also comes with a neat little storage case.

To make the Nap Anywhere secure, it comes with a shoulder strap that you wear like a seat belt. This prevents it from shifting or falling off if you move your head.

Below is a video of the Nap Anywhere in action

The Nap Anywhere takes a little getting used to. Allow yourself some time to learn how to set it up properly. You won’t want to try and figure this out while on a plane or in a car. It’s best to have the room to spread out and make sure everything is aligned for your needs.

Once you have it all setup though, it does make for a nice experience. I would recommend this product for side and stomach sleepers, not so  much back sleepers for obvious reasons. The Nap Anywhere is the perfect solution for getting comfortable in the middle seat of an airplane. I can never rest just lying straight back. Inevitably my head flops to one side and I end up jerking myself awake or make the person next to me really uncomfortable.

Like I said it takes some getting used to but definitely give it some time. If you are a frequent traveler, this could be the solution for you to finally get some quality rest.

For road travelers, its much nicer that placing your head against the side of a moving car or bus. Your head wont be bouncing against a glass window the whole time and your hair wont be a mess either!

My overall Nap Anywhere review recommendation is that this product is ideal for a traveler that likes to sleep on their side and wants to sleep against something. Sleeping against the side of an airplane or car can be hard on your neck as you are putting some of your body weight against it. The Nap Anywhere eliminates this problem and is more comfortable.

You can purchase the Nap Anywhere on their Website for $59. They ship worldwide.

HemingWeigh Acupressure Mat Review

Ever since Christmas 2014 I have been enjoying my Acupressure mat from HemingWeigh. This acupressure mat is made up of tiny sets of plastic spikes that don’t pierce your skin. The HemingWeigh model also comes with a head rest although I wouldn’t recommend using that right away until you acclimate to the regular mat. An acupressure mat is designed to promote circulation and relaxation. When I first used it, I lied down on it with a t-shirt on since I was afraid that the spikes would hurt too much. Most sites I have come across recommend using an Acupressure mat for about 15-25 minutes per session.

When you first lie down on the mat you feel an acute sharp poking pain. However, after about 5 minutes your body starts to release endorphins to deal with the pain. At this point you may notice a sort of warming sensation in your back. The pain will dissipate and you will start feeling relaxed. I try not to focus on anything and just let the mat do its work. After about 4 sessions I was able to graduate to using the head rest but you need to make sure its positioned properly to get the full benefit. I wouldn’t say there really all that much benefit to the head rest but it is a nice option if you don’t want your head on the floor.

I stay on my mat for 25 minutes at a time usually at night after I workout and after a shower. I find that lying on the mat help with recovery from my workouts and makes me fall asleep much faster. I’m not sure why that is but if you read through the reviews on you’ll find that many people get this benefit which is why I’m listing in on

The HemingWeigh mat also comes with a carrying case which is nice if you are going somewhere that you know has uncomfortable sleeping conditions. For maximum benefit you may want to turn on some relaxing tunes and get some aromatherapy going along with a dim, blueblocking light. All this together would make an ideal relaxation/sleep environment.

This is my first Acupressure mat review and I may be reviewing other mats in the future but given the price and the results you get for that price, I think you’ll be hard pressed to find anything better.

I should also not that when looking at other Acupressure Mat reviews, some reviewers have mentioned that the spike pattern on the mats doesn’t differ. So there really aren’t any options for changing the pattern that I’m aware of. The HemingWeigh Acupressure mat is the highest reviewed acupressure mat on Amazon right now and one of the most affordable!

Please let me know your experience using an acupressure mat.

Melatonin Shades

It’s 8:21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota right now and the sun has set. I am posting this review from my laptop in my bedroom with the lights on. What makes tonight different is that I’m wearing my new Melatonin Shades. These glasses are designed to block out blue light that suppresses natural melatonin production. It is now well documented that screen time at night before bed is bad for quality sleep. Staring at a screen, no matter how small, will emit blue light that tells your body to stay awake. Wearing the Melatonin Shades, my body does not get that message which makes it that much easier to sleep.

So why not just take a melatonin pill instead? I do use melatonin pills on an occasional basis but the effects of long term usage aren’t really known and I am hesitant to use sleeping supplements habitually.

The Melatonin Shades should provide the same benefits. As a plus, it’s a one time cost as opposed to pills that you consume.

The Melatonin Shades themselves are very comfortable and they make everything have a yellow tinge to it. They are perfectly appropriate for using your laptop or phone but I probably wouldn’t want to watch TV for an extended period of time with them.

I can see these glasses being very useful for people who work overnight shifts and need to start their sleep routine during daylight hours.

So far I am very happy with the Melatonin Shades and recommend them to people who just can’t part with their electronics in the bedroom.

Coming soon to an app store near you, a device that can detect when and how often you snore at night. Device records snores to track sleep | Fox News. Snoring apps are the new sleeping apps. Specifically designed to listen to and record your snoring while you sleep. Preliminary reviews say that these snoring apps aren’t that sophisticated and that if you have something like a fan on or are near traffic it won’t work. I would give it a few years before these are ready for prime time.

As an alternative to an app or even snoring app for that matter, you may want to consider the Beddit or Resmed S+, these are stand alone, non-wearable sleep tracking devices. The beddit goes underneath your sheets and automatically tracks your sleep which includes restlessness, heart beats per minute, breaths per minute (which could help track snoring) and the amount of times you got out of bed.

The Resmed S+ has all of the same features as the Beddit except that it sits on your night stand. Each have a phone app for you to track your data as well. With this technology, you will get a more accurate picture of your sleep quality as opposed to a stand alone app.

Re-Timer Review: Beat the Winter Blues

If you live anywhere a bit north or south of the equator you can understand how lack of sunlight can affect your sleep schedule. I live in Minnesota where the sun sets around 5pm during most of the winter. That means that you are usually going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Too much of this routing will inevitably lead to changes in mood and energy levels. You can also get this same side effect from traveling to different time zones where your body has to adjust to local time. A common problem among business travelers.

To remedy this, I have purchased a “Happy Light” which I would sit in front of for about half an hour each morning, or at least try to. Usually I am way too busy with getting the kids out the door and trying to get to work on time to spare another half our to sit tethered in front of a light.

Enter the Re-Timer. It’s works just as effectively if not more so than a happy light and it can be worn just like a regular pair of glasses. UV free light unobtrusively beams right to where your body needs it the most to get you energized and back on schedule. Since it’s portable, I’m much more likely to put them on and can even use them in bed while my wife is still sleeping without waking her up as well. The Re-Timer is charged with a standard USB cable and each charge lasts up to 4 hours. Given I only need to use it for 30 minutes a day I can go a whole week without having to recharge. If you travel frequently it’s your best bet for getting your sleeping schedule in sync with local time. It comes with a nice carrying case that can pack neatly into your suitcase.

The Re-Timer is backed by peer reviewed research that proves its efficacy. Knowing that, if you have been diagnosed with SAD, you may be able to purchase this product as a Health Savings Account (HSA) expense, tax free.

I look forward to using my Re-Timer this coming fall as the days start getting shorter and will report on my progress as winter approaches. In the mean time, do yourself and your sleep a favor and get one of these!

Update 12-17-15

We’re getting close to the Winter Solstice and I am feeling the full effects of SAD (seasonal affective disorder). This past week I have had an insatiable appetite, especially for carbohydrates. In fact, I bought a box of donuts on impulse on the drive home from work a few days ago and ate 3 that night. I’m lethargic and have a short temper.

Thankfully I remembered the re timer. I used it this morning at 6am for 20 minutes in bed. It’s very convenient and doesn’t light up the entire room so that your significant other can still seep. It’s amazing how dark it really gets this time of year in Minnesota. It took me a little while just to tolerate the light near my eyes let alone wear the glasses. After 20 minutes I turned them off and the room looked pitch black.

It takes about 4 days for the effects of the re timer to kick in so I am going to do this all weekend. I’m also going to keep to a consistent sleep time which will also help with energy levels.

It’s nice to know that I have this tool in my sleep arsenal. Check out more reviews of the Re Timer at Amazon.
